Abstract

An adaptive mixed finite element method using the Lagrange multiplier technique is used to solve elliptic problems with delta Dirac source terms. The problem arises in the use of Chow-Anderssen linear functional methodology to recover coefficients locally in parameter estimation of an elliptic equation from a point-wise measurement. In this article, we used a posterior error estimator based on averaging technique as refinement indicators to produce a cycle of mesh adaptation, which is experimentally shown to capture singularity phenomena. Our numerical results showed that the adaptive refinement process successfully refines elements around the center of the source terms. The results also showed that the global error estimation is better than uniform refinement process in terms of computation time.

Abstract

Some students in the university got some difficulties to express their ideas, especially expressing in foreign language such as English. How to start comunication and interaction sometime need someone to stimulate. The phenomenon often encountered in various levels of education even to the students college. The students tended to be very subjective towards topics, their peer or even partner. In the teaching and learning process, the teacher not only transfer the information to the students but also facilitate the students, stimulate to learn English and provide the technique suitable with the students’ need. Teaching English language might be carried out through several techniques, one of them was CLL (Community Language Learning). In this technique, students were treated as clients who could express their problems to the counselor as well as in the community. In addition, the teacher played the role of translator to help students express themselves using English. This means that learners had enough opportunities to speak without worrying about their limitations in using English. The results showed that CLL helped students to express ideas systematically. The ideas were organized well, understandable, and standardized. In addition, CLL improved the result of students’ score in speaking skill. The mean score increased from 54.74 in pre-test to 72.86 in post-test. It means that CLL gave good influence on students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the English language problems and learning strategies. The study employed a survey design which involved administering questionnaires of rating scales, using Rubin, J., & Thompson, I. (1994) and Rebecca Oxford (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), to measure English language problems and language learning strategies from 10 Thai students  of English Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty at Riau Islamic University. The result of this study revealed that the most serious problem of Thai students in English Language Learning is listening and writing skills while reading skill is the least problem. Another big problem involved being unable to write an essay within limited time and always have a listening problem. Beside, the problem least mentioned is unable to understand classroom lectures in English. All Participant reported a high frequency use of strategy on the SILL. The participants reported using social strategies most frequently and metacognitive strategies least frequently but in medium range. The most frequently used strategies involved asking lecture or classmate for helping. Not trying guess if they do not fully understand what is being said was the least frequently used.

Abstract

Translation involves at least two languages which come from the source language (SL) and target language (TL). In addition, it also involves the ideology in all of the translation fileds including novel. Novel has many components on it including figurative language. It means that the ideology depends on the belief of the writer or the translator which deals with two domain; foreignization and domestication. The realization of ideology of figurative language translation needs to be investigated to find out the translator's tendency. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The main objective of the study is to explain the realization of ideology in rendering figurative language from English into Indonesian in Dashner’s The Fever Code. In order to collect the data, the researchers used the document. The document was used to collect of figurative language from both English and its Indonesian translation including simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and irony. Then, they were analyzed the translation method used by the translator and the realization of ideology in rendering figurative language. The finding shows that two translation tendencies involves in translating process; they are SL emphasizes and TL emphasizes. The SL emphasizes involves literal translation, faithful translation, and semantic translation. Meanwhile, TL emphasizes involves free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation. The SL emphasizes matches the foreignization which introduces what is foreign and unknown to the target readers, taking the reader cover to the foreign culture and making the target readers see the cultural and linguistic differences; it also enables the better understanding and appreciation of the thoughts and lives of foreign people. Moreover, TL emphasizes matches domestication which brings what foreign and unknown the cultural and linguistic differences to the target readers. The findings can be concluded that the employing translation method leads to the translator to realize the ideology in rendering figurative language; simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and irony.

Abstract

Acute gout flare is the most common manifestation of gouty arthritis that intermittently occurs with severe pain in the joints due to interactions between monosodium urate crystals (MSU) and the surrounding tissues. The most common predilection is the metatarsophalangeal joint (the 1st MTP). Ultrasound examination is a modality that can be used to visualize MSU crystal precipitates in and around joints. This study aimed to determine the correlation between the findings of the MSU crystal precipitate on the 1st MTP using ultrasound with the occurrence of acute gout flare in gout patients. This study was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional method. The samples were 41 patients with a history of previous acute flares and in the intercritical phase when participating in the study. Examinations of ultrasound on the 1st MTP and random serum uric acid level were performed. Evaluations were carried out on both of the 1st MTPs to assess the shape of the MSU crystalline precipitate, namely Double Contour Sign (DCS), aggregate, and tophus. Each sample was evaluated within five days to assess the presence or absence of an acute flare. The diagnostic tests used were the Chi-Square Test and the Fischer Exact Test with a significance value of p <0.05. The results showed the images of DCS were seen in 20 samples with 9 (45%) samples experiencing acute flare (p <0.05), while in 21 samples where no DCS were found, all did not experience any flare. Findings of aggregate and tophus were rarely found, 7.3% and 4.9%, respectively. In this study, the finding of DCS precipitates using ultrasound has a significant correlation to the emergence of acute flare and is a significant form of precipitate findings in this study, whereas aggregate and tophus precipitates are difficult to determine.

Abstract

Of the rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients, half of whom require surgical intervention. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a standard treatment of CRS and sinonasal polyposis. Orbito-ocular complications can occur during FESS. The lamina papyracea (LP) is the weakest point of the medial wall of the orbit. The variability in the size and shape of the paranasal sinuses is important in the FESS procedure. The ethmoid sinus is the most complex paranasal sinuses. Preoperative evaluation using computed tomography (CT) is mandatory for all patients undergoing FESS. This study aimed to determine the lamina papyracea area and ethmoid sinuses volume in patients who underwent a CT scan of paranasal sinuses. This study was a descriptive study on 103 patients who underwent a CT scan of paranasal sinuses in the Radiology Department of Hasanuddin University General Hospital, Makassar, from January to August 2019. The lamina papyracea area and ethmoid sinus volume were measured based on age and gender. The results showed that the average of lamina papyracea size and ethmoid sinus volume was greater in males than in females. There was a correlation between age and posterior height of left lamina papyracea (p=0.02), but no correlation between ethmoid sinuses volume and age.
