Abstract

Stunting prevalence in Indonesia is still high and far from the National medium term development plan 2020-2024 target. As many as 41% of stunted under-fives come from poor households in the stunting focus area of the Bantul Regency. This study assessed the risk factors for stunting in low-income households. This study was conducted in July 2023 in Bantul Regency using an unmatched case-control approach. Using a purposive sampling technique, 156 children under five (78 cases and 78 controls), aged 6-59 months, from low-income families registered in the village and receiving social assistance from the Ministry of Social Affairs, were chosen. Interviews were conducted to gather research data, and a validity- and reliability-tested questionnaire was used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared tests, and binary logistic regression. The findings demonstrated a substantial correlation (p<0,05) between low birth weight and antenatal care (ANC) visits and stunting; however, there was no correlation (p>0,05) between mothers’ education level, mother’s age, and children’s breastfeeding status. In conclusion, low birth weight and ANC visits are risk factors for stunting among underfives. Low birth weight is the primary cause of stunting in children under five in low-income families.

Abstract

Toddlers, defined as children under five in the early stages of development, experience rapid growth but are vulnerable to nutritional problems such as stunting. Stunting is characterized by a child's height being shorter than the normal standard for their age, resulting from long-term undernutrition, recurrent infectious diseases, and inappropriate feeding practices. Exclusive breastfeeding is an important measure to prevent stunting, as breast milk provides the complete micronutrients and macronutrients necessary for optimal growth and development. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of exclusive breastfeeding on stunting in toddlers. Method: The research design employed a scoping review approach, following the PRISMA-ScR flowchart. Articles were identified through searches on Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and the DOAJ database using keywords such as "effect" AND "giving" AND "exclusive breastfeeding" OR "stunted toddlers". The initial search yielded 821 articles, with six articles meeting the inclusion criteria for the final analysis. Result: The study found a significant relationship between exclusive breastfeeding (p-value=0.003) and the incidence of stunting in toddlers. Specifically, 75.9% of stunted toddlers and 67.2% of toddlers had not received exclusive breastfeeding. Conclusion: Exclusive breastfeeding affects the stunting in toddlers.

Abstract

In Pekalongan Regency, Central Java, Indonesia, cases of productive population with diabetes mellitus have rapidly increased over the past three years. With regard to individual-based problems prevention and management, this is not sufficiently balanced. From the standpoint of the provider, this study examines attempts to prevent and control diabetes mellitus in productive population, including obstacles and limitations. With a focus on three rural areas (Wiradesa, Tirto I and Kedungwuni I Sub-Districts), qualitative study included 75 productive-age diabetics and 30 breadwinners. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were used to gather data, which was then thematically analyzed. Three rural locus with the highest prevalence of diabetes mellitus in productive population were found in the results. Through screening for non-communicable diseases at integrated service post (Posyandu), chronic disease management programs and cross-sectoral activities, there are numerous initiatives for the prevention and management of complications. The challenges include constantly changing programmers, programmers with many assignments, inadequate target awareness and low motivation, as well as a worse recording and reporting system. Such that fundamental information on both individual and public health cannot be accessed. Based on individual emphasis, recording and reporting, several programs for complication prevention and management are required to identify the range of non-communicable diseases.
