Abstract

Work-related musculoskeletal pain is a serious occupational health problem worldwide. Farmers are one of the groups of people who are most at risk of developing this condition. To help reduce musculoskeletal pain, farmers can participate in a exercise program called "Anti Sakit Ibu Kelompok wanita tani" (ASIK). The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of ASIK-exercise on musculoskeletal pain in a group of women farmers in Karanganyar. The study used a pre-test and post-test design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with a sample (respondents) of 19 women farmers who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The inclusion criteria were active members of the women farmers' group, in good health, and living in the village of Bolon. The exclusion criteria were respondents who could not read or write, and who were unable to do exercises due to physical constraints. The independent variable was ASIK gymnastics, the dependent variable was musculoskeletal pain, and the control variable was age. The analysis of the difference in musculoskeletal pain scores before and after ASIK-exercises without controlling age used a paired samples t-test, and the analysis of the difference in musculoskeletal pain scores before and after ASIK-exercises with age as a covariate was performed using ANCOVA at α = 5%. The test results stated that with controlling age, ASIK-exercises can significantly reduce musculoskeletal pain (F = 7.540; p = 0.009) with a large effect size category (d = 1.68).

Abstract

Introduction: The chance of respiratory diseases among workers participating in toll road construction projects is, for example, higher because of non-organic dust. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the level of lung capacity experienced by the workers by exposing them to dust and wearing masks. Methods: This cross-sectional study investigated toll road projects in Central Java and Yogyakarta and randomly selected workers from different strata of construction companies. The volume Air Sampler estimated dust concentration, while the pulmonary function test included spirometry. All data were analyzed using two-way MANOVA. Results and Discussion: The multivariate analysis of variance showed that workers exposed to dust exceeding the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) had significantly reduced FEV1 and FVC averages (p < 0.001). The averages of FEV1 and FVC increased more considerably in mask users than non-users, indicating mask usage's benefits. The decline in lung function was smaller in mask users, with FEV1 (95% CI: 0.080–0.321) and FVC (95% CI: 0.071–0.404). A reduction in walking distance also demonstrated significance to the decrease in FVC. Conclusion: They found that dust in construction declines lung capacity, but wearing masks provides some protection. However, such impact continues even after stopping wearing masks, thus stressing the importance of correct mask usage and staff training. Subsequent research must investigate dust interaction and various types of masks to enhance Indonesian workers’ health.

Abstract

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs in the informal sector of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) remain limited. Informal workers in MSME bakeries are exposed to various physical, chemical, and ergonomic hazards, which contribute to health complaints. These complaints often manifest as pain and discomfort in the back, hands, and feet—common indicators of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). If left unaddressed, MSDs can adversely impact workers’ health, increase absenteeism, and ultimately reduce MSME productivity. This community service program involved several stages: an assessment of OHS conditions among service partners, the implementation of intervention activities, ongoing monitoring, and evaluation of outcomes. The initial assessment identified musculoskeletal complaints among partner workers. Interventions included work posture assessments, evaluation of MSD symptoms, body anthropometry measurements, the design and provision of ergonomic chairs, and the development of workplace stretching routines. Monitoring was conducted by observing changes in work posture following the ergonomic chair intervention, as well as tracking MSD complaints after the introduction of stretching exercises. Evaluation results showed a reduction in work posture risk, from level 4 to level 2, after the ergonomic chair intervention. Moreover, muscle stretching exercises helped reduce the intensity of MSD-related pain among informal workers. In conclusion, this community service initiative through the development of ergonomic seating and implementation of stretching exercises has contributed to a reduction in MSD complaints among informal bakery workers in Tohudan, Colomadu. These improvements are expected to enhance the overall productivity of the MSME sector.

Abstract

Early childhood is a critical period for the basic development of physical, social, and cognitive aspects. One of the nutritional problems that often occurs is overnutrition. This study aims to determine the factors of gender, history of birth weight, history of breastfeeding, and consumption of formula milk related to the incidence of overnutrition in early childhood in urban and rural areas. This study uses secondary data from the 2023 SKI data. The design of this study is a cross-sectional study, a population of children aged 0-24 months with a sample size of 417 children. Univariate data analysis, a Chi-square test to explore differences in place of residence in overnutrition status, and bivariate (logistic regression) with the help of Stata software version 17. The results show that 7.26% of early childhood children who experience overnutrition live in rural areas, and 6.83% live in urban areas. There was no significant association between male gender (OR=0.99, 95% CI=0.40–2.46), history of risky birth weight (OR=1.00, 95% CI=0.54–3.28), non-exclusive breastfeeding (OR=1.16, 95% CI=0.40–3.31), or consumption of formula milk (OR=1.32, 95% CI=0.46–3.79) in urban areas with overnutrition (p>0.05). There was no significant association between male gender (OR=0.99, 95% CI=0.25–3.90), history of high-risk birth weight (OR=1.00, 95% CI=0.99–1.00), non-exclusive breastfeeding (OR=0.77, 95% CI=0.15–3.92), or formula milk consumption (OR=0.84, 95% CI=0.16–4.31) in rural areas with overnutrition (p>0.05). These findings suggest that although gender, history of birth weight, history of breastfeeding, and consumption of formula milk were not significantly associated with overnutrition in early childhood, interventions should focus on structural determinants such as maternal education and access to exclusive breastfeeding support, especially in rural communities.

Abstract

Stunting among children remains a global public health issue, with as many as 149 milion children under the age of five affected worldwide. One of the contributing factors to stunting is poor sanitation. This research aims to estimate the extent to which poor sanitation contributes to the risk of stunting in children under five years old using a meta- analysis approach. study employed a systematic review and meta-analysis using the PICO framework (Population, Intervention, Controls/Comparisons, Outcome), defined as follows: Population: children under five years old; Intervention: poor sanitation; Comparison: good sanitation; Outcome: stunting. Articles were collected using PRISMA flow diagrams. A total of nine articles that met the quality standards were then included in the quantitative synthesis using meta-analysis. Articles were analysed using the Review Manager 5.3 application. The findings of this meta-analysis indicate a significant association between sanitation conditions and the risk of stunting in children under five. Children who live in environments with poor sanitation are 3.71 times more likely to experience stunting than those living in areas with good sanitation. Poor sanitation constitutes a major risk factor for stunting, which significantly impacts children's growth and development. Enhancing access to improved sanitation facilities and promoting good hygiene practices are priorities to prevent stunting, particularly in areas with high prevalence. These findings offer strong evidence to support the policymakers and other stakeholders in integrating sanitation- based interventions into public health programs to reduce the prevalance of stunting among children under five years of age.
