Abstract

Abstract

Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) is a musculoskeletal disorder that often causes disability and a decrease in quality of life. Non-pharmacological management such as Yoga and William Flexion Exercise (WFE) are effective alternatives to improve lumbar stability and core muscle activation. This study uses a literature review method based on the PRISMA approach on 15 published articles between 2012–2024 that discuss the influence of Yoga and WFE on core muscle activation and lumbar stability in CLBP patients. The results of the study showed that Yoga plays a role in increasing the activation of transversus abdominis and multifidus muscles through an integrative mechanism between postural control, breathing, and body awareness. Meanwhile, WFE effectively strengthens the rectus abdominis and iliopsoas muscles, reduces intradiscal pressure, and decreases pain intensity. The combination of the two exercises has been shown to provide synergistic results in strengthening the stabilizing muscles and significantly reducing pain complaints. Therefore, the integrative approach of Yoga–WFE can be recommended as an effective, safe, and low-cost nonpharmacological rehabilitation strategy for people with CLBP

Abstract

This final project is the result of a collaboration with the company YM Yangsan Machinery Corp. The main idea of this research is based on the concern of workers who accidentally have a direct injury with the air grinder work device. This research focuses on the air grinder wheel because it has the potential to trigger work accidents and even death. Sixty percent of the time, a section of a diamond-blade broke off and struck an operator, death (OSHA). The remaining 40% caused serious injuries requiring hospitalization. By using ANSYS simulation, we can analyze stress distribution and deformation in the condition of the wheel rotating without bias load and the condition of the wheel rotating with bias load. The analysis reveals that the DAG-6SX-1 air grinder operates safely under no-load conditions, but under specific loads, it experiences stress beyond the material's yield strength, leading to plastic deformation. This emphasizes the importance of developing technology for real-time load monitoring and adjusting operational parameters to enhance both safety and efficiency under varying conditions. Without such measures, the tool could become structurally compromised, posing risks to operators and affecting performance.

Abstract

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is one of the most common knee ligament injuries among physically active adolescents, particularly in sports requiring frequent pivoting and landing such as basketball. Functional outcomes following ACL reconstruction are strongly influenced by the quality of postoperative physiotherapy, especially during Phase II rehabilitation, which serves as a transition toward higher functional activities. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of Phase II physiotherapy management incorporating progressive weight-bearing exercises on muscle strength, knee range of motion, pain, and functional performance in an adolescent patient after ACL reconstruction. A case report design was applied to a 17-year-old female patient following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). The intervention program consisted of progressive strengthening exercises (mini squats and lunges), balance and stability training, range of motion exercises, and functional task-oriented training. Outcome measures included muscle strength assessed using a sphygmomanometer, knee range of motion measured with a goniometer, pain intensity evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and functional performance assessed using the Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale (LKSS). The results demonstrated improvements in quadriceps strength (145–210 mmHg) and hamstring strength (130–155 mmHg), restoration of full knee extension (−5° to 0°), increased knee flexion to 145°, decreased pain intensity (VAS 4 to VAS 1), and improved functional performance (LKSS 79 to 92). Phase II physiotherapy incorporating progressive weight-bearing exercises resulted in clinically meaningful improvements in knee function and prepared the patient for advanced rehabilitation phases.

Abstract

The elderly is the final phase in the human life cycle which is characterized by a decrease in body functions, such as weakness and balance disorders, which can increase the risk of falling and decrease independence. Therefore, promotive and preventive efforts through physical exercise are needed to maintain fitness and reduce the risk of falling. One of the exercises that has proven effective is the Square Stepping Exercise (SSE), which is a step pattern exercise from simple too complex to training postural and cognitive balance for the elderly. This community service program was carried out at the Ngudi Waras Elderly Posyandu, Senden, Tohudan, Colomadu, involving 30 elderly people aged 60-75 years. The activities carried out included counseling, demonstrations, SSE practices, and evaluation using dynamic balance test before and after interventions. The instruments used were in the form of participant characteristics forms and balance time test. Data analysis was carried out in a descriptive manner based on the BMI category due to the limited number of samples and activity design. Most participants were in the BMI category of overweight (13 people), followed by normal (11 people) and Underweight (6 People). The average time of the dynamic balance test showed improvement in all BMI categories after the implementation of SSE. These result show that SSE can improve the dynamic balance of the elderly without being affected by nutritional status. SSE is effective as a simple exercise that can be applied as a self-directed program at home to improve balance and contribute to the prevention of fall risk in the elderly.

Abstract

Background: The increasing elderly population in Indonesia face higher risks of balance disorders and falls, threatening independence. Exercise interventions, such as strength and balance training, can improve dynamic balance. This study aimed to analyze the differences in dynamic balance improvement between square stepping exercise and Otago exercise in older adults based on body mass index (BMI). Methods: The sample was randomly divided into two groups: square stepping exercise (SSE group) and Otago exercise (OT group). Dynamic balance was assessed using the timed up and go (TUG) test, conducted before and after the intervention. This study used a 2×3 factorial experimental design with purposive sampling. Older adults aged 60–75 years with good cognitive and walking ability were included, while those with sensory impairments, mobility limitations, or lower extremity disorders were excluded. Sixty eligible participants were randomly assigned to either the SSE group (n = 30) and the OT Group (n = 30). Data were analyzed using a 2×3 factorial ANOVA, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: This study found that both SSE and OT interventions significantly improved dynamic balance in older adults, as measured by pre- and post-intervention TUG test. Both groups showed reduced TUG test times: the OT group from 13.76 to 11.84 seconds, and the SSE group from 14.48 to 11.13 seconds. ANOVA analysis indicated that the type of exercise significantly affected dynamic balance (F(1.54) = 4.515; p=0.038), while BMI and its interaction showed no significant effect (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Both exercises improved dynamic balance in older adults. However, the SSE group showed greater effectiveness than the OT group. Exercise type significantly influenced balance outcomes, while BMI had no significant effect.
