Abstract

Statistical literacy is an essential skill, particularly for prospective teachers who will be responsible for teaching statistical concepts to students. However, many prospective teachers struggle to understand and effectively apply these concepts. This study aims to systematically examine previous findings on the use of Learning Trajectories (LT) in statistical literacy instruction for prospective teachers, to design a more structured and applicable instructional framework. The method employed is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on the Xiao & Watson model, which consists of three stages: planning, conducting, and reporting the review. Articles were sourced from the Education Resource Information Centre (ERIC) database through a multi-step selection process involving quality screening, eligibility screening, and relevancy screening, resulting in a final sample of 7 articles out of an initial 31. Thematic coding was used to identify patterns and gaps in prior research. The results indicate that learning trajectories hold significant potential to enhance prospective teachers’ statistical understanding by supporting progressive learning; however, the integration of local contexts and a specific focus on prospective teachers remain limited. In conclusion, contextually designed learning trajectories can serve as a bridge between theory and practice in statistical literacy instruction for prospective teachers.

Abstract

The research about Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) has increased more widely since 1970. Therefore, several published articles in some journals can be found in some sources. This paper aims to provide an overview of the learning differential equation in higher education based on relevant literature. Therefore, we are interested in conducting a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology from 24 articles generated from Top 5 Scopus Q1 according to SJR reported by Scimago Journal & Country Rank in the subject area of education. The present study focuses on two aspects, namely: 1) the learning method of ODE that is proposed in the academic literature, and 2) the topic of ODE has been put forward and discussed in the academic literature. The systematic literature review found four methods of learning ODE (active learning, mathematical modelling, information, and technology communication, and geometric and qualitative solutions). Moreover, we also concluded that the several topics of ODE in the academic literature are 1) first order of ODE, 2) Euler method, 3) application to the problem (rate of change, population model, logistic generalized, and spring-mass), 4) second-order of ODE, and 5) system of ODE. The result of this study can provide a summary of existing literature and identify the weakness or gap to be investigated further in the following research related to the topic of ODE.

Abstract

In an era where data is increasingly prevalent, statistical literacy skills are essential for active citizenship and informed decision-making. For future generations, prospective teachers play a role in developing this skill. However, current instructional approaches often overlook the integration of practical applications and local wisdom, limiting students' ability to connect abstract statistical concepts with real-world experiences. The objective of this research is to design a Learning Trajectory (LT) that supports the statistical literacy skills of prospective teachers by utilizing a hybrid learning strategy that integrates local knowledge from South Sumatra as context. A total of 60 prospective teachers from a mathematics education study program participated in this study. A design research method was employed, specifically utilizing a validation study. The research unfolded in three stages: preparation for the experiment, the experimental design, and the retrospective analysis. Data collection techniques included student activity sheet assessments, classroom observations, and interviews. Data analysis involved comparing the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) with the Actual Learning Trajectory (ALT) in the retrospective analysis stage to develop the LT. The results indicate that the designed LT guided students through five activities that support statistical literacy: reading and interpreting data tables using statistical situations with local wisdom from South Sumatra as context, interpreting graphs, analyzing and reflecting, exploring outliers, and making conclusions and presenting findings. These findings highlight the importance of integrating local wisdom contexts into statistical education, as well as the relevance and applicability of mathematical concepts for prospective teachers. This research contributes to the design of a learning trajectory based on a local wisdom context that can be applied in statistical literacy learning.
