Abstract

learning motivation, especially in the development of speaking skills in higher education. The purpose of this paper is to understand the students’ motivation in learning speaking skills in higher education using culturally responsive teaching identified as CRT. In this research the researchers used a qualitative method and used open-ended interviews to collect the data, conducting interviews with three participants, all students of an English language department. During the interviews, it was kept in mind that the focus was to gather information about the student’s experiences and perspectives on the adopted culturally responsive teaching approach. In this case, thematic analysis was used to analyze the collected data, since it helps to focus on the main themes and the repeated patterns that exist in the data collected. Three major areas were discussed as follows. The first theme is positive experiences with the culturally responsive teaching approach which indicates the positive experiences of the students as the students were made to feel valued and listened to in a learning environment, which incorporates student’s cultural realities as they learn. The second theme is appreciation of cultural diversity emphasizing that the students’ cultural background should be valued and used to increase their desire and interest in learning. The third constructed theme is the positive relationship with motivation, which depicts the clerical correlation between a culturally responsive teaching approach and students’ motivation level. Implications of the findings or discussion of the study These findings imply that culturally responsive teaching could improve students’ motivation toward learning speaking skills because of the more positive classroom environment. The findings of the research add to the existing literature on teaching practices for enhanced learning among college students, particularly arguing that there is a need to consider the cultural identities of students as important determinants of teaching practice. Subsequent studies should take up the following issues in understanding the long-term effects culturally responsive teaching yields on nearly all facets of language learning and the broader application of this pedagogical approach in various learning environments. The novelty of this research is that it emphasizes the importance of recognizing and integrating students’ cultural backgrounds as a key element in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of translanguaging in English language learning in one of the secondary schools in Manado, which is a multilingual environment with the use of the local language of Manado, Indonesian, and English. The main objective of the study was to understand teachers' beliefs and their translanguaging practices as language mediation strategies that support concept understanding, social interaction, and student motivation. The method used was a case study with three English teachers as participants, collecting data through interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed thematically. The findings suggest that translanguaging serves as a cultural and cognitive bridge that facilitates students to understand the material more deeply and strengthen their linguistic identity. Despite concerns about reduced exposure to English due to the use of local languages and Indonesian, teachers use translanguaging strategically to balance learning. The main obstacles found are the limitations of school policies and teacher training that support the implementation of translanguaging. In addition, translanguaging has been shown to increase students' motivation to learn and active participation. This research recommends the development of teacher education and training policies that are responsive to language diversity, as well as the development of a curriculum that accommodates translanguaging as a legitimate learning strategy. This study makes an important contribution to the development of inclusive and contextual English language pedagogy in multilingual classrooms in Indonesia

Abstract

This study examines teachers’ perceptions of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) in teaching speaking within Indonesian senior high schools. A qualitative design was employed, using purposive sampling to select three English teachers. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that teachers held a clear understanding of NLP as an approach linking language, cognition, and behavior. They expressed positive attitudes toward its implementation, identifying techniques such as pacing, modeling, elicitation, visualization, anchoring, and reframing as effective in fostering interactive classrooms, lowering anxiety, and enhancing students’ confidence. Teachers also acknowledged challenges, particularly large class sizes, limited instructional time, and cultural factors that influenced classroom dynamics. The primary motivation for applying NLP was to overcome affective barriers such as low self-confidence and fear of mistakes considered more problematic than linguistic limitations. Overall, NLP was perceived to enrich speaking instruction by addressing both cognitive and affective aspects of learning. It provides a holistic framework that supports learner-centered, engaging, and confidence-building English speaking classrooms.
