Abstract

When it comes to efficiently developing and implementing a language program, doing a needs analysis is necessary. Thus, to fulfill students' English language demands in the International Class Program (ICP) of the Biology Department at Universitas Negeri Makassar, it is important to ascertain the learning requirements of students. This study aimed to find out students’ expectations about English learning materials, and to assess their efforts to achieve it. This study employed a mixed-method approach to assess the needs of the students, integrating both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. The research included a total of 34 participants, comprising 31 second-year students enrolled in ICP of the Biology Department, 1 English lecturer, and 2 alums of the same program. The questionnaire and the interview were the instruments used to gather information. The study's results showed that students need English learning materials that are related to what they are studying. To improve their English, it was very important for the students to have access to the right English materials. Researchers looked at the learning needs of the students and found that they all had different levels of English ability. The students thought that reading and speaking were the most important skills to learn in order to be fluent in English. The most common problem the students had was incorrect grammar use. The students who took part in the ICP had different ways of learning, as shown by the analysis of goal needs. Some of these ways were reading English-language books and watching videos or movies. The most important ones were to improve their self-esteem and get ready for future job prospects. Reading English-language books, watching movies, and listening to music were the main things that students did to improve their English language skills.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the perceptions and experiences of science students in using artificial intelligence (AI) technology as an assistive medium in learning English. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, conducted at STKIP Darud Da’wah Wal Irsyad (DDI) Pinrang. The study participants consist of eight students from various science study programs who have used AI applications such as Grammarly, ChatGPT, and Duolingo as part of their learning process. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and then analyzed thematically using Braun & Clarke’s approach. The findings indicate that AI serves as an adaptive learning facilitator, enhances learning autonomy, and promotes the development of writing and speaking skills in English. Students expressed positive responses towards AI due to its ability to provide instant feedback and personalization features. However, challenges were also identified, including AI’s limitations in understanding specific scientific terms and technical obstacles related to interface and internet connectivity. This study concludes that AI is effective as a learning companion for English language acquisition among science students, but its use needs to be supported by curriculum integration and continuous lecturer guidance.

Abstract

This study examines the nexus between Directed Motivational Current (DMC), a novel motivational theory, applied linguistics, and student learning autonomy within English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts. The objectives are to understand how students describe and experience a DMC and how the DMC reframes students’ perceptions of their learning autonomy and self-regulation. Using a qualitative case study with 13 participants from a private vocational campus in Ternate, North Maluku, Indonesia, who were systematically selected, the research identified two main themes: DMC as an unstoppable flow state and reframing autonomy from the right to vote to Self-Governance. Additionally, the study revealed a significant and transformative connection between DMC and student autonomy in ESP learning. DMC acts as a catalyst that reshapes students' understanding of autonomy, going beyond mere self-governance, driven by self-directed learning (SRL). The findings suggest that clear, intense objectives in DMC support and sustain proactive SRL behaviours, such as self-supervision and environmental management, which are crucial for achieving specific and challenging ESP objectives. These findings have implications for ESP teaching and curriculum design. Instructors should encourage students to make informed choices and help them set goals to trigger DMCs, such as through authentic projects linked to their careers. Instruction should focus on teaching self-regulation strategies to sustain DMC flow, rather than adding extra tasks. ESP educators should empower students to create their own disciplined learning rules, rather than just passively following the curriculum.

Abstract

This study explores teachers' perceptions and experiences implementing translanguaging strategies in rural English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms in south Buton, Indonesia. This research is a case study where the limit of this research is to focus on teacher perceptions and experiences in implementing translanguaging in English language learning in three secondary schools in rural areas in South Buton, Indonesia. The subjects of this research were three English teachers at three different schools in South Buton. This subject is expected to provide an overview of teachers' perceptions and experiences in implementing translanguaging in some rural schools in an Indonesian context. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and class observation with three experienced EFL teachers at three rural junior high schools in South Buton. The findings reveal that teachers perceive translanguaging as effectively enhancing students' learning comprehension, and the use of translanguaging can create inclusive and culturally responsive learning in EFL classrooms. The study highlights predominantly positive attitudes towards translanguaging, with teachers perceiving it as an effective tool for facilitating learning in linguistically diverse classrooms. Teachers report positive experiences, citing improved student understanding, increased engagement, and preservation of linguistic and cultural identities. The teachers' experience actively incorporated translanguaging strategies, using code-switching between English, Indonesian, and the local Cia-Cia language to enhance student comprehension. While acknowledging challenges such as balancing multiple languages and potential impacts on English proficiency development, teachers remain confident in translanguaging's effectiveness. This research is expected to contribute to the growing literature on translanguaging in EFL contexts and offer insights for educators in linguistically diverse settings.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were; 1) to find out if the use of cognitive strategies is effective to improve students' reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Sampaga or not, and 2) whether or not students are interested in utilizing cognitive strategies in their reading comprehension learning. This study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design. The population of this study was students in class X at SMA Negeri 1 Sampaga, and the sample was 16 students in class X at IPS 1. The research data were collected by providing a multiple-choice reading comprehension test on the subject of descriptive text, as well as a questionnaire on a Likert scale to measure students' interest. The t-test and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. According to the Paired Sample T-Test results, the probability value (sig. 2-tailed) = 0.000 which is lower than the significance level of 0.05. The researcher then concluded the use of the cognitive strategies is effective in improving students reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Sampaga. Furthermore, the 'interested' response dominates the questionnaire score of the students’ interest. The findings indicated that students are interested in implementing cognitive strategies in their reading comprehension learning. Keywords— Cognitive Strategies, Reading Comprehension, Students’ Interest, Descriptive Text.
