Abstract

Generation-Z dominating preservice biology teachers in this era. Teachers’ TPACK is influenced by factors such as demography. Technological, pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) is a framework used in teacher competence in Indonesia. This research will contribute to the training process of Generation-Z preservice biology teachers who have special characteristics. This study aims to determine the effect of demographic factors on the TPACK of Generation-Z preservice biology teachers. A total of 652 Generation Z preservice biology teachers from biggest ten Indonesian educational universities participated in this survey. The research results show that only gender has a relationship with TPACK in every aspect. Motivation to become a teacher influences TPACK, except for the technological knowledge (TK) aspect. In contrast, other aspects do not influence TPACK. Gender and motivation to become a teacher are factors that need attention in the training process for prospective biology teachers. Universities and the government can use these results to formulate suitable training programs for preservice biology teachers in Indonesia.

Abstract

Tropical forests have known ecosystem services, including sequestering atmospheric carbon and fixing it into biomass. Since the revolutionary industrial changes, the atmospheric carbon level has risen during the recent decades, while the global temperature has increased compared to the pre-industrial levels. Furthermore, reducing atmospheric carbon can mitigate global warming and climate change. This study aims to estimate the aboveground biomass and carbon stock in the Pesanggrahan Forest, Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia, and contribute local information to the vast global literature. This study was conducted in August 2023 and measured all tree species with a diameter >20 cm in a 5-ha area. The results found 208 individuals and 39 species of trees, the aboveground biomass and carbon stock of which were calculated. The total aboveground biomass (AGB) and carbon stock were 4,486 and 2,248 tons C/ha, respectively. Meanwhile, the total forest AGB and carbon stock in the 5-ha sampling area were 224.77 tons/ha and 112.39 tons C/ha, respectively. These findings highlight the cruciality of tropical forest vegetation in carbon storage and their overall role in regional and global ecosystem management in light of climate change.

Abstract

Reflective thinking skills are vital for 21st-century life skills. This study examines the effectiveness of the Problem-Oriented Project-Based Learning (POPBL) model combined with the PEKERTI Worksheet in improving the reflective thinking skills of eighth-grade students at Junior High School 2 Alla, Enrekang, South Sulawesi. POPBL emphasizes real-world problem-solving, while the PEKERTI Worksheet—focusing on questions (PErtanyaan), essential concepts (Konsep Esensial), action plans (Rencana Tindakan), and initiatives (Inisatif)—enhances the learning process. Using a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group, the study involved 75 students divided into three groups. Data were collected via observations, questionnaires, and tests, and analyzed using ANCOVA. Results showed significantly higher reflective thinking skills in the POPBL group using the PEKERTI Worksheet compared to the POPBL-only and conventional learning groups (p = 0.000). These findings suggest that integrating POPBL with the PEKERTI Worksheet effectively supports the education curriculum in Indonesia and develops essential life skills in junior high school students.
