Abstract

This study reviews how deposit insurance interacts with the operations, behavior, and stability of microfinance institutions (MFIs). Methods: A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted using PRISMA-guided screening. Searches were run in five academic databases (Google Scholar, Web of Science, SpringerLink, Taylor & Francis Online, and ScienceDirect) using the string “deposit insurance” AND “microfinance,” producing 625 records. After removing duplicates and applying title/abstract and full-text screening, three studies met the final inclusion criteria and were synthesized. Results: The evidence shows three main patterns: (1) deposit guarantees can increase moral hazard in MFIs with weak governance (as seen in Indonesia’s rural banks), (2) depositor trust, often shaped by perceived safety, can reduce deposit volatility and panic withdrawals (as shown in Gabon), and (3) deposit insurance may shift higher-risk borrowers away from insured banks toward MFIs, changing where risk concentrates in the financial system. Implications: Deposit insurance policy should consider MFIs, not only commercial banks. If protection is extended to MFIs (fully or partly), it should be paired with stronger governance requirements, better supervision, and risk-based pricing to reduce moral hazard while supporting depositor confidence and financial inclusion

Abstract

The low-wage workers play a vital role in supporting in Indonesia's economy but remain highly vulnerable and are often excluded from social protection policies. This study aims to profile low-wage workers and provide insights for policymakers to improve social protection measures. The research utilizes repeated cross-sectional microdata from the National Labor Force Survey (Survei Angkatan Kerja Nasional/Sakernas) between August 2018 and August 2023, a logistic regression model with marginal effects was applied to identify key characteristics of low-wage workers. The findings show that the primary characteristics of low-wage workers are low education levels and working fewer than 20 hours per week. This group is predominantly female, unmarried or divorced, and from younger generations (Gen Z). They are often employed in the informal sector, lacking specific skills, and are mostly working in agriculture. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened their vulnerabilities, amplifying economic risks that persist post-pandemic. The policy implications include expanding educational opportunities to enhance workers' employability, followed by implementing skill training and job placement programs. Additionally, extending minimum wage coverage to both formal and informal sectors, along with offering flexible work arrangements and subsidized childcare, particularly for women, can further support these workers. Furthermore, extending social protection to include social security and healthcare, with incentives for employer contributions, is essential. During crises, policies prioritizing healthcare access, income support, and job protection are crucial for ensuring the economic security of low-wage workers and reducing inequalities.

Abstract

The high digital penetration in  Jakarta has not been matched by adequate media literacy, particularly among the younger generation. This study proposes an integrative model combining the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and K-Means Clustering to design a data-driven and behaviorally segmented media literacy strategy. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 15 practitioners and experts, as well as a survey of 202 young respondents aged 15–24 from five regions of  Jakarta. The AHP approach was used to identify priority dimensions of media literacy, encompassing cognitive, technical, ethical, and participatory aspects. K-Means clustering was employed to group individuals based on their digital competency characteristics and to empirically map literacy segmentation patterns. The results reveal three main clusters with significant differences in media usage patterns, ethical awareness, and critical capacities. These findings confirm the importance of adaptive and evidence-based media literacy strategies, rather than merely normative interventions. This integrative model is expected to form the basis for policymaking and the design of media literacy programs in Indonesian urban areas.

Abstract

This research, conducted in Siak Regency, a key area of smallholder plantations in Riau Province, holds significant implications for the local agricultural community. The main objective of this study is to analyze the factors that influence production and the inefficiency of smallholder oil palm plantations, analyzed using the Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) method with STATA 17 software. Data were collected through field surveys and direct interviews with 132 smallholder farmers in Empang Pandan and Keranji Guguh Koto Gasib District Riau. The SFA estimation results show that five input variables significantly affect smallholder plantation production: land area, K fertilizer, organic fertilizer, and labour, which positively correlate with the increase in Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) production. In contrast, N fertilizer showed a negative correlation. We also found that the dummy variables for plantation management patterns and agricultural extension or training significantly impacted the inefficiency of smallholder oil palm plantations in Riau Province. The alternatives of the interaction between input variables on smallholder plantation production reveal that five alternative interactions between input variables significantly affect the increase in smallholder plantation production by more than 5 per cent, including the interaction of land area >< plant age, plant age >< pesticide, plant age >< labour, N fertilizer >< P fertilizer, and organic >< pesticide interaction.

Abstract

This study intended to explore the effect of financial literacy, social media use, and pay-later promotion on online impulsive and compulsive buying among youth. Using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), 366 valid responses were analysed. Additionally, a moderation analysis using multigroup analysis (MGA) was conducted to determine if there are gender differences in these relationships. The finding revealed that of the three predictors of impulsive buying, only social media use had a positive and significant impact, while impulsive buying became a crucial determinant for compulsive buying. Interestingly, this study found that gender did not moderate the relationships outlined in the proposed model, indicating that the effects were similar for both males and females. This study suggests that youth should be wise in using social media, as it could lead to excessive purchasing that worsens the financial and psychological condition of both males and females.

Abstract

This study examines the nonlinear effect of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance on firms’ return on assets in Indonesia. The study uses panel data on 12 manufacturing firms listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during 2017–2023, sourced from Refinitiv Eikon. The estimation is conducted using a fixed-effects panel regression with robust standard errors. ESG is included as the natural logarithm of the ESG score and its squared term to test a U-shaped pattern. The results show that the coefficient on log ESG is negative and statistically significant, while the coefficient on squared log ESG is positive and statistically significant. These findings indicate that ESG improvement at lower levels tends to reduce profitability, but at higher levels it tends to increase return on assets. In addition, leverage and the COVID-19 period reduce return on assets, whereas operating liquidity increases return on assets.

Abstract

The oil and gas (O&G) industry faces a double disruption: structurally higher oil-price volatility and an accelerating net-zero transition that jointly threaten the financial stability of incumbent firms. This study reviews the determinants of financial resilience in O&G firms during the energy transition and consolidates a research agenda. Following the PRISMA 2020 protocol, a Boolean query in Scopus returned 74 records. After removing 5 duplicates and screening 69 records against pre-specified eligibility criteria, 23 studies were retained for synthesis, 22 of them oil-and-gas or energy-firm focused. Evidence was synthesised through an effect-direction matrix and organised with the ADO and TCCM frameworks. The literature converges on a recurrent set of determinants: internally, capital structure and leverage, liquidity, green capital expenditure, and profitability; externally, oil-price volatility, interest rates, and carbon pricing or climate policy. The evidence base remains fragmented and dominated by macro- and policy-level analyses, with limited firm-level dynamic modelling. The review reframes the field from financial distress toward financial resilience, proposes an integrative antecedents–decisions–outcomes framework, and articulates a TCCM-structured research agenda with propositions testable using dynamic panel (GMM) methods.

Abstract

Despite the significant decline in poverty rates in Indonesia, the simultaneous shrinking of the middle class and the expansion of the vulnerable population reveal a persistent challenge of socio-economic inequality. Accessing formal financing remains a significant challenge for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), as nearly 70% of them currently unbanked. Although Islamic banks are legally mandated to fulfill both commercial and social functions, their role in optimizing Islamic social finance instruments such as zakat and waqf to address the financing gap of unbanked MSMEs remains suboptimal. This study examines how Islamic social finance can be integrated with the Islamic banking ecosystem to support MSMEs and promote inclusive and sustainable economic development. This study adopts a descriptive analysis approach to explore stakeholder perceptions, experiences, and strategies. This study used secondary data combined with in-depth interviews (IDIs) with relevant stakeholders and focus group discussions (FGDs). This study suggests that Islamic banking in Indonesia develop a hybrid financing model that integrates commercial and Islamic social finance schemes to support MSMEs. MSMEs are segmented into subsistent, unbankable, pre-bankable, and bankable categories, with each segment requiring tailored financial instruments ranging from qard hasan to commercial contracts such as murabahah and musyarakah. Islamic banks and Islamic social finance institutions can form an ecosystem whereby banks act as orchestrators, and social institutions serve as program implementers. The findings emphasize that segment-based empowerment and strategic collaboration are essential to ensure sustainable MSME upgrading and inclusive financial development.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The Anambas Islands is one of the regions in the Riau Islands province with a vast proportion of sea, accounting for 98.74 percent of its total area. Through the mechanism of decentralization, most of the functions of marine and fisheries gradually become part of the affairs of the district/city. The transfer of authority is accompanied by the transfer of financing through a balance fund, so that with the increasing funds managed by the region, it is expected that the development of marine and fisheries will improve. DAK is one of the fiscal instruments of the balance fund, which plays an important role in achieving national priority areas (DJPK 2016). As noted by BAPPENAS (2013) in the national development priorities 2015-2019, the main issues and challenges in the development of marine and fisheries are suboptimal production infrastructure, namely in the capture fleet, ports, agricultural roads, land, and access to business development (capital and markets). The aim of this research is to formulate strategies for managing the Special Allocation Fund (DAK) in the marine and fisheries sector from 2011 to 2016 in the Anambas Islands Regency using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Based on the AHP method, the priority strategies include the evaluation of regulations related to DAK management, the placement of support personnel, socialization and law enforcement, improving coordination systems, and forming Joint Business Groups. Abstract

Background: Insurance literacy is crucial in improving farmers' access to insurance. Lack of understanding of insurance products and inability to process information hinder farmers from making the right decisions, resulting in low insurance utilization.Purpose: This research aims to (1) analyze farmers' insurance literacy levels and influencing factors and (2) analyze the effect of farmer insurance literacy and other variables on the accessibility of AUTP.Design/methodology/approach: Data from 251 respondents, including those who accessed and did not access AUTP in Aceh Province. To elucidate the research objectives, an analysis of the level of insurance literacy was conducted using multiple regression analysis and an analysis of accessibility to AUTP using binary logistic regression.Findings/Result: The results show that the level of farmer insurance literacy is in the less literate category. The variables of age, education duration, and bank account ownership significantly affect farmer insurance literacy. The variables that affect AUTP accessibility are age, education duration, farm revenue, land ownership, farmer insurance literacy value, farmer group activity, perception of farm risk, insurance claim experience, and AUTP premiums. These results can describe the condition of farmer insurance literacy and AUTP access in other regions of Indonesia with similar farmer characteristics. Conclusion: Farmers' insurance literacy has a significant impact on AUTP access. Therefore, the government and stakeholders need to conduct regular socialization and training to increase farmers' knowledge and awareness of insurance so that more farmers can take advantage of the AUTP program.Originality/value (State of the art): This study focuses on farmer insurance literacy. This study links farmer insurance literacy with AUTP access. Keywords: accessibility, Aceh, AUTP, insurance literacy, farmers
