Abstract

The phenomenon of schools and madrasahs sending students to language courses or inviting private tutoring reflects a transformation of formal education increasingly reliant on external institutions. This practice emerges in response to competitive pressures, parental demands, and the need to enhance academic achievement. While seemingly rational, it also reveals hidden dimensions related to efficiency, the commodification of education, and the shifting of teaching responsibilities. This article analyzes the phenomenon by integrating the theories of shadow education, outsourcing, and commodification, and compares practices in Indonesia with countries such as South Korea, Japan, and Egypt. The analysis reveals a paradox: private tutoring can improve student academic outcomes while simultaneously weakening teacher roles and formal school functions, generating ethical and social issues such as conflicts of interest and educational inequality. The study emphasizes the importance of regulation, transparency, and a balanced integration between formal and supplementary education. Through a holistic approach, private tutoring can complement rather than replace formal education, fostering an effective, inclusive, and sustainable education system

Abstract

This article aims to situate Umar ibn al-Khattâb’s ijtihâd within the tension between the spirit of legal reform and loyalty to normative texts in the development of Islamic law following the death of the Prophet Muhammad. Various issues emerged after the death of the Prophet Muhammad that had never occurred during his lifetime. This situation prompted the Companions to exercise ijtihâd in response to the challenges of their time. In this context, Umar ibn al-Khattâb stands out as a prominent figure who introduced a number of legal decisions that appeared to diverge from practices established during the Prophet’s era. His ijtihâd included the suspension of the amputation penalty for theft, the annulment of hadd punishment for adultery, the decision not to distribute war booty among Muslim soldiers, and the discontinuation of zakât allocation to new converts (mu’allaf). Some scholars praise Umar’s sharp legal insight as being in harmony with the maqâshid al-syarî‘ah (the higher objectives of Islamic law), while others regard it as an early form of legal liberalization or even a deconstruction of the Islamic legal system. Employing a qualitative, library-based method with a descriptive analytical approach, this study finds that Umar’s ijtihâd did not abrogate fixed legal rulings in Islam but rather reflected a contextual sensitivity to socio-political realities that could hinder the just implementation of law. In conclusion, Umar’s ijtihâd represents a hermeneutical approach that balances textual fidelity with contextual awareness. The contribution of this study lies in emphasizing that Umar’s contextual approach offers a paradigmatic model for understanding the dynamics of contemporary Islamic law while remaining grounded in the principles of maqâshid al-syarî‘ah.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to understand the nature of speaking from the perspective of philosophical anthropology and communication ethics, with particular emphasis on its role in reflecting human identity as al-insān al-nāṭiq (the rational and speaking being). Method – This study employed a reflective-philosophical approach, analyzing classical and contemporary perspectives on language philosophy, communication ethics, and the degradation of speech in the context of social media and instant expression culture. The method consisted of a critical literature review and conceptual analysis rather than empirical sampling. Result – The results showed that speaking is not merely a biological function or impulsive response but a conscious act that integrates reason, emotion, and moral responsibility. In the modern era, however, speech tends to lose depth, control, and ethical awareness, leading to risks such as misinformation, social fragmentation, and symbolic violence. Implication – This study suggests the need to revive reflective, ethical, and intentional communication practices to strengthen social harmony, protect human dignity, and ensure that speech continues to serve as a medium of truth and genuine dialogue. Originality/Value – This research provides a novel reinterpretation of the act of speaking within the framework of Islamicate philosophical anthropology and communication ethics, offering a critical alternative to contemporary communication practices dominated by speed and superficiality.

Abstract

Economics is a fundamental principle that must be fulfilled by every individual. However, the secular economic system that promised benefits at the beginning turned out to be full of problems. Like . capitalism is the most dominant economic system in the world and even developed into a civilization that has its own worldview. Capitalism is also often claimed and accepted as a universal system that can be applied to the whole world. In responding to this way of thinking, capitalism needs to be studied and identified from its most basic concept, namely from a worldview perspective. In this case, Syed Naquib al-Attas responded that by returning to the teachings of Islam with its Shari'a and Inshaf for the sake of achieving prosperity, it is not only focused on physical things, but also metaphysical. And measuring the determination of maslahah is not limited to worldly life, but also life in the hereafter.

Abstract

Abstract

This research explores the role of the World Muslim Scout Jamboree 2025 as a platform for International Islamic Youth Education, focusing on character development and intercultural competence among Muslim youth. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving student delegates, international participants, scout leaders, and organizing committee members. The findings indicate that participation in the jamboree significantly strengthened moral responsibility, leadership disposition, and collaborative skills through experiential learning processes. Moreover, intensive intercultural interaction fostered adaptive communication skills, cultural awareness, and sensitivity toward diversity. The shared religious identity among participants functioned as a facilitating bridge for intercultural dialogue while allowing the preservation of distinct national cultures. The study also reveals the emergence of a reflective International Muslim youth identity characterized by moderation, inclusivity, and peace-oriented values. These findings suggest that international scouting initiatives can serve as an effective non-formal educational model integrating character education, global citizenship competencies, and Islamic values. The research contributes to the conceptual development of International Islamic Youth Education by demonstrating how global youth engagement programs can bridge local Islamic educational traditions with broader global experiences. Future longitudinal studies are recommended to examine the sustainability of these developmental impacts over time.

Abstract

This study critically examines the hierarchy of educational elements—material (māddah), method (ṭarīqah), teacher (al-mudarris), and the spirit of the teacher (rūḥ al-mudarris)—from the perspectives of Islamic educational thought and critical pedagogy. Employing a qualitative philosophical literature review, the study synthesizes classical Islamic educational texts, contemporary works on fiqh al-awlawiyyāt, and recent empirical and theoretical literature in critical and humanistic pedagogy (2020–2025). Data were analyzed through thematic and philosophical-analytical procedures to map hierarchical relations among educational elements and to interpret the normative concept of ahammu as a principle of priority rather than negation. The analysis demonstrates that rūḥ al-mudarris constitutes the apex of the educational hierarchy, functioning as an ethical-spiritual habitus that governs pedagogical decision-making regarding materials, methods, and teacher competence. Grounded in fiqh al-awlawiyyāt, the study argues that educational effectiveness depends on the sequential fulfillment of prior elements, culminating in the cultivation of the teacher’s moral-spiritual orientation. This framework challenges technocratic and method-centered reforms by re-centering education as a value-laden praxis. The study’s primary contribution lies in offering a theoretically integrated model that bridges Islamic jurisprudential reasoning and critical pedagogy, positioning the spirit of teaching as a central analytic category in educational theory. The findings have significant implications for educational policy, teacher education, and curriculum development, particularly in contexts seeking to balance technical competence with ethical and spiritual formation.

Abstract

The rising incidents of violence and discrimination under the guise of religion in Indonesian society emphasize the need for effective educational strategies to foster social harmony. This study investigates the implementation of religious moderation as a strategy for anti-discrimination education in Islamic school management, with a focus on SMAN 1 Ponorogo. Using a qualitative field research approach, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that religious moderation, rooted in the concept of “wasathiyah” (balance), serves as a critical framework for nurturing tolerance, empathy, and respect among students of diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds. The school’s management plays a pivotal role in sustaining these values through strategic policies, including curriculum integration, multicultural education, teacher training, and clinical supervision. Student testimonies and teacher reflections illustrate the tangible impact of these initiatives, with students developing emotional resilience and forming close bonds across religious lines. The research highlights that religious moderation not only enhances school harmony but also has broader societal implications, acting as a preventive measure against radicalism and contributing to national unity. The study underscores the need for continued policy support, community engagement, and ongoing professional development to ensure the long-term sustainability of religious moderation as a cornerstone of peace education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article explores the dynamic role of religion in responding to contemporary human anxiety, particularly through a reflection on the interrelation between reason, language, and faith. In a modern context characterized by fragmentation of meaning and psychological stress, religion is often perceived as outdated or merely symbolic. This paper argues that the root of the problem lies not in religious teachings themselves, but in how they are understood, conveyed, and lived. Using a conceptual-qualitative and interdisciplinary approach that integrates linguistic studies, existential philosophy, and the psychology of religion, this study emphasizes the importance of religion as a space for dialogue and responsiveness rather than a system that silences questions. The article discusses three main subthemes: (1) the role of language as a medium of existential expression in religion; (2) the function of reason in interpreting dynamic faith; and (3) religion’s role as a responsive answer to human anxiety. The analysis of these subthemes suggests that mature religiosity promotes openness, spiritual freedom, and moral maturity. Thus, this article offers a framework for interpreting religion that is not only theologically relevant but also existentially and ethically impactful in daily life.
