Abstract

This cross-sectional study examined the influence of Peak Height Velocity (PHV) on agility and sprint performance in young pencak silat athletes. 20 athletes (11 females, 9 males; aged 11-15 years) underwent anthropometric assessments to estimate PHV using the Mirwald equation, with agility and sprint performance evaluated through the Illinois Agility Test and 20-meter sprint, respectively. Results revealed a significant negative correlation between PHV and agility (r = -0.458, p = 0.042), indicating that improved agility was associated with advancing maturation. At the same time, PHV showed a strong positive association with sprint performance (r = 0.650, p = 0.002). Male athletes demonstrated superior agility compared to females (p = 0.012), though no significant gender difference emerged in sprint times (p = 0.064). The findings establish PHV as a critical determinant of physical performance in adolescent pencak silat practitioners, with the maturation stage significantly influencing sport-specific skill development. These results emphasize the importance of incorporating biological maturation metrics, rather than relying solely on chronological age when designing training programs for youth martial artists. Coaches should consider athletes' PHV status to optimize agility and speed development while mitigating injury risks during growth spurts. The study provides empirical support for maturation-adjusted training protocols in combat sports, though longitudinal research is recommended to track performance trajectories across PHV phases and further validate these findings.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of educational technology in the 21st century has reshaped the paradigm of science learning in elementary schools, emphasizing the need for students to develop critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. This literature review investigates the effectiveness of integrating the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model with Augmented Reality (AR)-based Flashcards to enhance elementary students’ critical thinking skills in Integrated Science (IPAS) education. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, this study analyzed publications from 2015–2025 sourced from reputable databases such as Scopus, ERIC, ScienceDirect, and SINTA. The data were examined through content analysis to identify key pedagogical themes, effectiveness, and research gaps regarding the integration of PjBL and AR in primary-level instruction. Findings reveal that AR-assisted PjBL significantly improves students’ conceptual understanding, engagement, motivation, and higher-order thinking skills by merging hands-on learning with visual and interactive experiences. Nevertheless, few empirical studies have simultaneously explored both approaches in the IPAS context. The review concludes that PjBL assisted by AR Flashcards holds substantial potential to enhance critical thinking, creativity, and scientific literacy among primary learners. Future research is recommended to conduct longitudinal and experimental studies to validate its long-term pedagogical effectiveness and scalability across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has created new opportunities for innovation in education, particularly through virtual reality (VR), which serves as an immersive learning medium. While numerous studies have explored the pedagogical potential of VR in science and health education, its application in traditional martial arts such as Pencak Silat remains under-researched. This study systematically reviews and synthesizes global evidence on the effectiveness of VR-based learning within physical education contexts using the PRISMA 2020 framework. Literature searches were conducted across Scopus and ScienceDirect databases for publications from 2015 to 2025. Ten eligible studies were identified, including six meta-analyses and four systematic thematic reviews. Quantitative findings revealed that VR produced small to moderate improvements in knowledge (SMD = 0.28–0.97) and practical skills (SMD = 0.15–0.23), with significant effects on complex cognitive domains (SMD = 1.12) and learning satisfaction (SMD = 1.14). Thematic analyses highlighted consistent enhancements in learner motivation, engagement, and self-efficacy, though methodological heterogeneity and limited experimental validation in martial arts education persist. Specifically, research on Pencak Silat remains at a developmental stage, with an emphasis on media design rather than empirical evaluation. The synthesis concludes that VR offers strong pedagogical potential to enhance physical education’s cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning outcomes. Nevertheless, future research should implement robust experimental designs and objective motion-based assessments to evaluate skill transfer and preserve cultural values in Pencak Silat learning within junior high schools.

Abstract

Mountain climbing represents a physically demanding sport that requires high levels of strength and endurance. Post-climbing activity commonly results in physical fatigue associated with lactic acid accumulation, making effective recovery strategies essential for restoring physiological condition. Sport massage and Swedish massage are frequently applied recovery interventions; however, comparative evidence regarding effectiveness for fatigue reduction among mountain climbers remains limited. The present study aimed to examine differences in effectiveness between sport massage and Swedish massage in reducing fatigue levels among mountain climbers. A pretest–posttest experimental design was applied. The study involved 30 participants who were randomly assigned into two groups, consisting of 15 participants receiving sport massage and 15 participants receiving Swedish massage. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and independent t-tests. The findings indicated statistically significant reductions in fatigue levels following both massage interventions. Percentage analysis demonstrated greater fatigue reduction in the sport massage group, which achieved a reduction score of 45%, compared with 35% in the Swedish massage group. The findings suggest that sport massage provides superior effectiveness for reducing fatigue levels among mountain climbers following strenuous climbing activity.

Abstract

Talent identification in sport plays a strategic role in optimizing athletic potential while supporting inclusive participation for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The availability of valid and reliable assessment instruments remains essential to ensure accurate evaluation of physical performance capacities within this population. The present study examined the construct validity and test–retest reliability of the Track and Field SportRec Talent Test Battery (SRTTB), which was developed to assess fundamental physical abilities relevant to track and field performance among individuals with intellectual disabilities. The study involved 74 male students with intellectual disabilities aged 14–20 years from a special education school in Klang. Data were collected using a series of physical performance tests, including the standing long jump, 30 m sprint, push-up, seated medicine ball throw, standing overhead medicine ball throw, standing backward overhead medicine ball throw, and the 20 m intermittent test for estimating VO₂max. Statistical analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS version 30. Construct validity was evaluated through convergent and discriminant validity analyses, while test–retest reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). The results demonstrated excellent reliability for the standing long jump (ICC = 0.94), 30 m sprint (0.89), push-up (0.97), standing overhead medicine ball throw (0.84), standing backward overhead medicine ball throw (0.91), and VO₂max (0.99). Moderate reliability was observed for the seated medicine ball throw (ICC = 0.70). Convergent validity analysis indicated strong correlations among physical performance measures, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.885 to 0.996. Discriminant validity analysis revealed low correlations between the SRTTB components and unrelated constructs, indicating that each test captured a distinct dimension of physical performance. Overall findings support the SRTTB as a psychometrically sound instrument for repeated application in talent identification and athlete development programs involving individuals with intellectual disabilities.
