Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate the feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness of a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics–Augmented Reality (STEM–AR)–based learning media on the topic of Earth’s layers for fifth-grade elementary school students. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which consists of the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The participants were fifth-grade students of SDN Miroto Semarang Tengah. Data were collected through expert validation, student response questionnaires, and pretest–posttest assessments, and were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods. The results of expert validation indicated that the developed STEM–AR learning media met the criteria of high feasibility in terms of content accuracy, visual design, and interactivity. The limited trial results showed positive student responses, indicating a high level of practicality and ease of use. Furthermore, the effectiveness analysis revealed an improvement in students’ learning outcomes, as evidenced by an increase in the average score from 62.00 in the pretest to 84.00 in the posttest. These findings suggest that the integration of augmented reality with a STEM approach facilitates students’ understanding of abstract Earth science concepts through interactive three-dimensional visualization and integrated learning activities. Therefore, the STEM–AR learning media is considered feasible, practical, and effective, and has the potential to serve as an innovative instructional tool to enhance scientific literacy and student engagement in elementary science learning.

Abstract

Science literacy remains a critical challenge in elementary education, with many students struggling to connect scientific concepts to real-world contexts. This study investigated the effectiveness of implementing a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) approach to enhance science literacy among third-grade students in integrated IPAS learning within the Indonesian Merdeka Curriculum. A classroom action research design employing Kemmis and McTaggart's cyclical model was conducted over two cycles at SDN Cempaka Putih Barat 01, Central Jakarta, involving 32 third-grade students. Data were collected through performance-based assessments, systematic classroom observations, and documentation, with analysis following Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The intervention achieved substantial improvements in science literacy outcomes. Student pass rates increased dramatically from 43.75% at baseline to 71.87% after Cycle 1 and 90.63% after Cycle 2, while mean achievement scores rose from 66.47 to 74.71 and ultimately to 83.24. Observational data documented progressive improvements in both teacher pedagogical practices (2.58 to 2.87) and student engagement levels (1.96 to 2.23). The findings provide empirical evidence that STEAM-based instruction effectively enhances science literacy by promoting interdisciplinary integration, constructivist learning, and student-centered pedagogy. The results extend existing literature by demonstrating STEAM's effectiveness within the Indonesian educational context and offering detailed implementation insights for practitioners seeking evidence-based strategies to improve elementary science education.

Abstract

Strengthening independent learning at the elementary school level has become a strategic priority in 21st-century learning, amid increasing demands for critical, collaborative, and reflective thinking skills. However, independent learning among elementary school students is often considered underdeveloped due to their age and dependence on teacher guidance. This study aims to analyze in depth how the application of the ADLX-Introflex approach facilitates the growth of student learning independence at the Integrated Islamic Elementary School (SDIT). The study uses a phenomenological qualitative approach, with data collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and learning documentation. Thematic and cross-case analyses were conducted to trace the gradual shift in learning regulation patterns throughout the learning cycle. This analysis was conducted to reveal the structure of students’ learning experiences during the implementation of ADLX-Introflex.  The results showed that the Active Deep Learner eXperience (ADLX)-based learning design, reinforced through the Introflex cycle, which includes individualization, interaction, observation, and reflection, shaped reflective, internalized learning independence. Students showed initiative in completing tasks, the ability to manage learning strategies contextually, and awareness of their learning processes and responsibilities. These findings challenge the assumption that independence in learning develops only at higher levels of education. Implicitly, the ADLX-Introflex approach can serve as a strategic pedagogical framework for building a foundation for long-term learning autonomy from elementary education onward.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the use of augmented reality (AR)-based diorama media on solar system material in improving elementary school students’ critical thinking skills and learning motivation. The problem in this study is the low level of students’ critical thinking skills and learning motivation due to learning that is still abstract, less interactive, and unable to visualize concepts concretely. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design (nonequivalent control group design). The research sample consisted of 60 students, including 30 students in the experimental group and 30 students in the control group. Data collection techniques used a critical thinking skills test and a learning motivation questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was conducted using an independent samples t-test.The results showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in terms of critical thinking skills and learning motivation (p < 0.05). The experimental group showed higher mean scores compared to the control group, indicating that the use of AR-based diorama media had a significant positive effect. These findings indicate the novelty in integrating augmented reality technology with diorama media to visualize abstract concepts more concretely. Therefore, AR-based diorama media can be an innovative, interactive, and contextual learning alternative in improving students’ critical thinking skills and learning motivation in science learning at the elementary school level.

Abstract

General Background The integration of 21st-century competencies, particularly computational thinking and collaboration, remains a central priority in primary education. Specific Background In practice, elementary education encounters structural constraints such as digital inequality and the abstract nature of science content, which limit the effective development of these competencies through conventional instruction. Knowledge Gap Existing studies rarely synthesize how educational game–based unplugged coding simultaneously supports computational thinking and collaborative skills within primary-level science learning. Aims This study conducts a systematic literature synthesis to examine the integration of computational thinking and collaboration through educational game media using unplugged coding approaches. Results Based on 20 selected articles following PRISMA 2020 procedures, findings indicate that unplugged coding significantly increases computational thinking performance by approximately 25%–42% compared to traditional approaches, while collaborative integration strengthens social interaction and active participation. Additionally, this approach supports conceptual understanding of abstract science topics by facilitating accurate mental model construction. Novelty The study identifies a synergistic learning configuration combining physical activity, algorithmic rule structures, and group interaction as a unified pedagogical system rather than isolated instructional elements. Implications These findings highlight unplugged coding as an inclusive, scalable, and pedagogically aligned strategy for strengthening computational thinking and collaboration in primary education, particularly under conditions of limited digital infrastructure. Highlights• Unplugged learning design demonstrates measurable gains in logical problem structuring• Cooperative gameplay strengthens student engagement and social interaction patterns• Physical simulation supports deeper conceptual reasoning in abstract science topics KeywordsComputational Thinking; Collaboration; Unplugged Coding; Educational Games; Elementary Education

Abstract

This research was motivated by the urgency of improving the quality of education and learning outcomes for elementary school students to ensure they are relevant to 21st-century competencies. The primary objective of this study was to validate the Inquiry Learning (IL) development model combined with the Deep Learning (DL) approach and to test its effectiveness on students' cognitive learning outcomes. The method used was Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) framework, involving fifth-grade students in five elementary schools as research subjects. Data were collected through expert validation instruments, observations, and learning outcome tests (pre-test and post-test), which were then analyzed using N-Gain inferential statistics. The results showed that the IL-DL model was deemed highly valid and practical by experts and practitioners. Key findings revealed a significant improvement in cognitive learning outcomes; in a small-scale trial, the completion rate jumped dramatically from 30% in the pre-test to 95% in the post-test. This consistent effectiveness was reinforced by a large-scale trial, with a completion rate of 94.6%. Furthermore, the average N-Gain Score (g) of 0.78 (High category) and the effectiveness level of 78.54% (Effective category) confirm that the synergy between structured inquiry and in-depth learning successfully mitigates the phenomenon of shallow learning. This study concludes that the IL-DL model is a transformative solution worthy of adoption to improve the quality of learning and student competencies in elementary schools.

Abstract

General Background Digital transformation in education requires learning media that support active, contextual, and student-centered learning in elementary education. Specific Background Project-Based Learning (PjBL)-based interactive e-modules combine digital content, project activities, and multimedia features to support elementary students’ learning outcomes, engagement, and critical thinking. Knowledge Gap Although previous studies report positive results, the evidence remains limited because the number of reviewed studies is relatively small, research designs vary, and standardized effect size reporting is still lacking. Aims This study aimed to analyze and evaluate PjBL-based interactive e-modules in improving elementary school students’ learning outcomes through a narrative literature review. Results Fifteen articles published between 2020 and 2025 from Scopus, Sinta, and Google Scholar were reviewed. The findings showed a consistent positive trend, with several studies reporting moderate learning gains, approximately 20–30% increases in post-test scores, along with better student engagement and critical thinking skills. The review also identified teacher competency, technological access, and instructional design quality as key moderating factors. Novelty This review synthesizes recent evidence on PjBL-based interactive e-modules by linking learning outcomes with moderating implementation factors and practical development priorities. Implications The findings suggest the need for structured teacher training, standardized interactive module frameworks, and scalable digital infrastructure, while future research should apply meta-analytic approaches and report effect sizes to strengthen the evidence base. Highlights • Fifteen articles from 2020–2025 were synthesized from Scopus, Sinta, and Google Scholar.• Post-test scores showed a consistent 20–30% upward pattern across reviewed studies.• Teacher competency, technological access, and instructional design quality shaped implementation results.
