Abstract

The challenges of waste management in urban areas continue to evolve in line with increasing population and economic activities of residents. The Sukorejo Sub-district area in Gunungpati District, Semarang City, experiences similar problems with continuously increasing waste quantities. This community service program aims to implement a waste bank system as an alternative for sustainable environmental management. The implementation involves socialization activities, waste separation training, establishment of waste bank management groups, and operational assistance (Suwerda, 2019). The outcomes demonstrate the formation of one waste bank unit with 45 active customers, an increase in residents' awareness regarding waste separation from 35% to 78%, and a reduction in the quantity of waste disposed to the landfill by 2.3 tons per month. This program generates positive impacts including improved area cleanliness, additional income for residents, and contributions to the circular economy (Purba et al., 2019). Recommendations are provided to develop similar programs in other sub-districts and to enhance collaboration with the private sector for program sustainability.

Abstract

Smartphone display modes (dark mode and light mode) play an important role in visual comfort, especially in relation to the risk of digital eye strain due to intensity of use and lighting conditions. This study aims to optimize the Naïve Bayes algorithm to predict display mode preferences based on users' visual ergonomics factors. Data were collected through an online survey of 283 smartphone users using purposive and convenience sampling. Seven variables were used as features, namely age, gender, duration of use, dominant time of use, purpose of use, screen type, and lighting conditions, with display mode preference as the target label. The study built two models, namely the baseline Naïve Bayes and the optimal model. Optimization was carried out by balancing the data with the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique for Nominal (SMOTEN) and adjusting the alpha hyperparameter using GridSearchCV. The evaluation results showed that the baseline model achieved an accuracy of 68.42% with a light mode class recall of 0.57. After optimization, the accuracy increased to 70.18% and the light mode recall rose to 0.71, indicating an improvement in the model's ability to recognize minority classes and reduce prediction bias. This study shows that SMOTEN optimization and hyperparameter tuning effectively improve the model's sensitivity to user preferences and have the potential to support the development of adaptive interfaces that automatically adjust the display mode to improve user visual comfort.

Abstract

Understanding static electricity can be challenging for elementary students due to its abstract nature. As the ability to explain scientific phenomena is a key indicator of scientific literacy, contextual and interactive learning experiences are essential. This study aimed to explore the level of understanding of the concept based on a case study in a Malaysian primary school. This study investigated the implementation of a guided inquiry-based static electricity experiment and analyzed the scientific literacy outcomes of Grade 3 students in a Malaysian elementary school. Using purposive sampling, 28 students participated in a simple practicum that involved using a ruler and paper pieces, supported by a worksheet and a nine-item Likert-scale questionnaire to assess their scientific literacy. Data analysis confirmed normal distribution, with literacy scores indicating strong performance: 81% in understanding and explaining phenomena, 85% in designing and evaluating scientific inquiry, and 88% in applying scientific information for decision-making. Skewness values of 0.035, -0.836, and -0.917, respectively, suggest consistent data patterns. Despite overall positive results, the lowest score highlights the need to strengthen concept understanding. Findings demonstrate that simple, experiment-based learning can foster cognitive development and scientific literacy, emphasizing the role of teacher guidance in linking everyday experiences to scientific concepts.

Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic disease that serves as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disorders and requires early detection to prevent serious complications. This study aims to develop an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model for binary classification of individuals with and without hypertension. The training data were used to train the model while monitoring the accuracy and validation loss metrics, whereas model performance was evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics. The results indicate that the ANN model achieved an accuracy of 87.8%, demonstrating a balanced ability to identify both hypertensive and non-hypertensive patients. The confusion matrix shows a high number of correct predictions in both classes, confirming the model’s effectiveness in supporting binary classification for health data. These findings suggest that ANN has the potential to serve as an effective approach to support medical decision support systems, particularly in the early detection of hypertension and in reducing long-term complication risks through more timely interventions.
