Abstract

This study investigated how English as foreign language (EFL) learners in a literary community setting perceived the readability of ChatGPT’s translations in translating an English short story into Indonesian. This research used a short story written by Gerald Murnane entitled The Boy’s Name was David. By using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research explored two questions: the readability score of the translations and learners’ perceptions of this readability. Purposive sampling was employed by involving 18 EFL learners from Kurvadot Creative, a literature discussion community in Cepu, Indonesia. The data were collected through document, questionnaires, and focus group discussions. The readability assessment was analyzed by using Nababan’s Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) framework, while the EFL learners’ perceptions in the discussion was analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results revealed that learners generally rated the ChatGPT translations as Readable, with an average score of 2.68. However, the participants also identified several challenges. These included linguistic issues, such as issues with syntax, semantics, and stylistics, as well as reading engagement problems where the participants required more time to read certain parts of the translation. In addition, the untranslated sentences caused by ChatGPT's content policy restrictions added to the challenges. Despite the relatively high readability ratings, these factors disrupted participants' overall reading experiences with the translated short story by ChatGPT.

Abstract

The transformation of education through the Merdeka Belajar policy requires optimizing the roles of school principals and teachers in improving data-based education quality. This study aims to analyze the roles of principals and teachers in maximizing education quality through the use of education report data in the Merdeka Belajar era to support the vision of Indonesia 2045. The method used is a quantitative descriptive approach with data sources derived from education report data for 2024 and 2025 at an elementary school. Data collection was conducted through documentation, while data analysis was carried out by comparing literacy and numeracy achievements between years. The results show a significant decline in literacy and numeracy achievements, indicated by a decrease in the percentage of students achieving minimum competency and the absence of students in the high-performance category. The discussion reveals that this condition is caused by suboptimal implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum and weak utilization of data in learning planning. The conclusion emphasizes that strengthening the roles of principals and teachers in data-based learning is essential to improve education quality sustainably.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze school branding based on meaningful learning in promoting student well-being in elementary schools. The novelty of this research lies in its integration of meaningful learning, school branding, and student well-being within a single analytical framework. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research subjects include the principal, 8 teachers, and 12 students of SDN Bakipandeyan 01 Sukoharjo. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using an interactive model consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The research results show that school branding can be built through meaningful learning and contribute to realising student wellbeing in elementary schools. In-depth, contextual, and sustainable learning processes shape the school's image as a learning environment that supports the realisation of student wellbeing (student voice, sense of belonging, positive relationships, participation in school life, and feeling valued and respected). Thus, strengthening school branding is not only through image building but also grows from the learning experiences that students actually feel. Therefore, teachers and schools need to optimise the learning process to strengthen branding and student wellbeing.

Abstract

This investigation examines the correlation between AI usage, digital literacy, and students’ self-efficacy in the Paragraph Writing course. In this study, digital literacy is conceptualized as students’ capacity to locate, critically assess, and responsibly utilize digital information. Meanwhile, AI usage focuses on AI usage to assist students in the writing process. This study employed a correlational design. The sample consisted of 109 students from the English Language Education Program at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, selected using random sampling. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using multiple and Spearman’s rank correlation analyses. The results indicated a significant correlation between AI usage and self-efficacy, with a correlation coefficient of 0.343, classified as low. Additionally, there is a significant correlation between digital literacy and self-efficacy, with a correlation coefficient of 0.630, classified as strong. The multiple correlation analysis showed that students’ self-efficacy and AI usage with digital literacy together are significantly correlated, with a correlation coefficient of 0.662. Digital literacy has a stronger correlation with self-efficacy than AI usage. Therefore, the use of AI needs to be balanced with digital literacy so that students are more confident in writing English paragraphs.

Abstract

Learning materials that are suitable for the learning environment and resonate with students’ experiences play a crucial role in helping them learn English. A major obstacle in learning English is the scarcity of learning resources that incorporate local content, resulting in low holistic reading skills. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of locally-enriched learning materials on students’ holistic reading and to explore their responses. This study uses a mixed-method approach with a sample of 136 seventh-grade students in Indonesia. Data were gathered using tests, observation, and questionnaires, and analyzed using t-tests and descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that locally-enriched learning materials effectively enhance students’ holistic reading. This improvement is achieved by incorporating oral and written language skills, integrating local culture and daily activities into text discourse, and improving reading comprehension through vocabulary mastery, identifying main ideas, accuracy in grammar, and scanning. Learning enhancement was reflected in stages in English language teaching (ELT), the use of locally-enriched learning materials, material variations, teaching approach, participation and reading skill. Future research should concentrate on predicting text content and skimming in holistic reading. This study recommends the stakeholders to make policies in promoting local content as supporting learning materials in ELT.

Abstract

This paper examines the techniques of English teachers in conducting process-focused Differentiated Instruction using a Project-Based Learning approach in zoning-based English classrooms. The introduction of the zoning system has increased heterogeneity among the classrooms, where teachers need to manage issues such as students' varying English proficiency levels, motivation, readiness, participation, and self-confidence. This paper employs a qualitative research design where two English teachers at one public senior high school in Kartasura are involved as participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and lesson plan analysis. The study revealed three major findings. First, English teachers implemented several process-focused differentiation practices, including heterogeneous grouping, differentiated task distribution, flexible pacing, scaffolding, continuous monitoring and feedback, collaborative learning, and student autonomy. Second, the implementation of process-focused differentiated instruction in the classroom faced several challenges, such as varying levels of English proficiency, difficulties in addressing diverse learning needs, low student motivation and readiness, unequal participation in group work, and differences in students' confidence. Third, teachers addressed these challenges through adaptive strategies, including scaffolding, task differentiation, flexible instruction, active monitoring, direct intervention, and constructive classroom interaction.

Abstract

The implementation of pedagogical deep learning under Indonesia's Merdeka Curriculum presents unique challenges for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers within Islamic secondary school (madrasah) contexts. This qualitative case study investigates the specific classroom challenges and adaptive teaching strategies of EFL educators implementing this approach at MTSN 2 Surakarta. Research data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, extensive classroom observations, and instructional document analysis, and subsequently analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis framework. The findings reveal seven primary challenges: limited student vocabulary, low learning motivation, diverse student abilities, restricted instructional time, inadequate facilities, curriculum changes, and insufficient teacher readiness. To overcome these hurdles, teachers deployed adaptive strategies including project-based learning, peer teaching, technology integration, and contextualized higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) activities. This study underscores the complex interaction between madrasah institutional culture and curriculum reform, concluding that continuous professional development, robust institutional support, and contextualized pedagogical innovations are vital for sustainable classroom implementation.

Abstract

Machine translation has become increasingly prevalent in Indonesia, yet the effect of sentence complexity on translation quality remains underexplored in the context of the Indonesian–English language pair. This study investigates the accuracy, readability, and acceptability of Google Translate outputs across four sentence types (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex) using Nababan's (2012) Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) framework. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with 100 sentences purposively selected from the novel Teruslah Bodoh Jangan Pintar and evaluated by two expert raters. Results show that translation quality declines consistently as syntactic complexity increases: simple sentences achieved the highest scores across all three dimensions, while compound-complex sentences performed the lowest. Importantly, readability consistently exceeded accuracy across all sentence types, indicating that Google Translate tends to produce fluent-sounding output that nonetheless contains meaning distortions and unnatural lexical choices. These findings highlight the limitations of NMT systems in processing hierarchical clause relationships, subordination, and contextual nuance, and reinforce the need for human post-editing in complex translation tasks. The study provides a replicable syntactic classification model for future NMT quality research and offers practical guidance for language educators and translation practitioners in Indonesia.
