Abstract

Vocabulary and psychomotor abilities are two important things in learning English especially for elementary school students. In mastering these two competencies we need a learning strategy that is not only able to explain but also to describe and illustrate. Snowball throwing is a learning method that uses a paper which contains a word that is shaped like a ball. This method is usually used in learning English. This research tries to find out the influence of the snowball throwing method towards students’ vocabulary mastery and psychomotor ability in learning English in the first grade of SD Islam Terpadu Sorong City. The research is quasi-experimental by using randomized pre-post control group design. The subject of this research consists of two groups; experiment and control groups have 27 students in each. There are two instruments in this research; they are the test for English vocabulary and psychomotor ability. The data are examined by using a non-parametric tests such as Mann Whitney U dan Wilcoxon signed ranks. Related to the result of the hypothesis test towards the two paired samples, we can find that the score of English vocabulary mastery (p= 0,000) and psychomotor ability (p=0,016) are significant, where the significance score of experiment group is lower than the critical limit of the research 0,05. So, we can conclude that the snowball throwing method influences significantly towards students’ vocabulary mastery and psychomotor ability at the first grade of SD Islam Terpadu Sorong City. Abstract

This article aims at arguing for the importance of the testing step when designing an educational application by taking a case study from the development of adaptive learning media. The media contains a set of in-struments that are specifically built to empower students' critical thinking skills. Three aspects that are con-sidered in testing this educational application are application validity at each stage of system development, measurement of the final system feasibility test for user needs, and system implementation by running learning media on the test sample. Implementation of testing on application products is carried out accord-ing to system requirements and models. The existence of the characteristics of adaptive media and the diver-sity of menus in the application implies the importance of doing a lot of improvisation when carrying out tests, such as determining the right test cases, choosing the appropriate test model and method, determining a suitable test environment, and considering several other aspects aimed at optimizing test results. obtained in order to ensure the quality of learning media products. This study analyzed the test data using Likert scale as an interpretation of the results of the validation assessment from the experts by referring to certain perceived standards of assessment. Meanwhile, the analysis of the data from the feasibility test results from a sample of 20 students using the system usability scale (SUS) instrument. The technique to test the effec-tiveness was using a pretest-posttest control group design with a sample of 98 students. Parametric/non-parametric data analysis was then applied to analyze the data on the results of testing the effectiveness or efficacy of adaptive media products in improving students' higher order thinking skills (HOTS). Based on the testing steps applied to the application of adaptive learning media, the results obtained that the product was considered feasible and effective in empowering students' HOTS. The study concludes that the educa-tional application testing that has been carried out is able to provide an objective and independent view of the application of adaptive learning media which will be useful in operational functions to understand the level of effectiveness in its implementation before being widely used in learning.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to develop a religious text translation model based on rechecking semantic-communicative analysis to improve translation quality. The model supports semantic accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and moderation in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: This research integrates semantic and communicative translation theory, cognitive-communicative approaches, functional translation principles, and hermeneutic interpretation. These frameworks collectively support a holistic and ethically grounded approach to religious translation. Literature review: Previous studies on religious translation focus mainly on isolated linguistic or cultural strategies, with limited integration of systematic rechecking and SDGs perspectives. This study addresses the gap by proposing an integrated semantic-communicative and contextual model. Methods: This study employs a qualitative approach using data from Islam: A Short History and focus group discussions with Qur’an translation teachers. Semantic-communicative analysis, rechecking procedures, and hermeneutic interpretation are applied to ensure accuracy and contextual relevance. Results: The findings indicate that religious text translation faces challenges related to semantic non-equivalence and cultural context. Integrating semantic-communicative analysis improves readability and meaning accuracy. Rechecking procedures effectively reduces the distortion of key religious terms. Implications: The study highlights the need for translator training that integrates linguistic and religious knowledge. It also supports the use of contextualized glossaries and cautious machine translation with rechecking mechanisms in line with the SDGs. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its holistic and replicable translation model integrating semantic-communicative analysis, expert-based rechecking, and hermeneutic interpretation. This approach advances translation studies by linking linguistic accuracy with ethical and sustainable knowledge transmission.

Problem-solving skills and Computational Thinking (CT) are very important skills in today's digital era. Improving the ability of CT mathematics education students is becoming increasingly important as the need for skills develops in the 21st century. Project-based learning (PBL) has been shown to be effective in improving these skills. However, the limited research examining the impact of PBL with Delphi software on computational thinking skills in mathematics education encourages the need for further research. This study aims to explore the impact of project-based learning with Delphi on improving students' computational thinking skills. This type of research is a quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design. The population is 6th semester students of mathematics education. The sample consisted of two classes totaling 40 students. The results of the T test showed that the experimental group showed a significant improvement compared to the control group (t = 4,102, p < 0.05). The implications of this research are important for the development of a technology-based mathematics education curriculum. It is recommended for further research with a larger sample of different institutions to explore the long-term impact as well as other factors that may affect project-based learning outcomes.

Abstract

The growing demand for critical reading skills in 21st-century education requires innovative teaching approaches that not only develop comprehension but also foster higher-order thinking. However, many EFL students still perceive reading as a passive activity, limiting their ability to engage with complex texts. This study explored the effectiveness of HOTS-based digital books integrated with the FIVES strategy in enhancing students’ critical reading abilities. Using a mixed-methods design, 60 first-semester EFL university students from two institutions in Central Java were divided into experimental and control groups. Quantitative data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, while qualitative insights were obtained via questionnaires and observations. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s post-test scores (from 71.47 to 85.68), as supported by an independent-samples t-test (p < 0.05) compared to a modest gain in the control group. Students also reported greater engagement and increased awareness of reading as an active, reflective process. These findings confirm the effectiveness of the FIVES strategy embedded in HOTS-oriented digital content and underscore the value of contextualized materials in fostering metacognitive reading skills. The study concludes that pedagogically grounded digital reading innovations can improve learning outcomes and shift students’ mindsets from passive decoding to critical comprehension.

Abstract

This study investigated how English as foreign language (EFL) learners in a literary community setting perceived the readability of ChatGPT’s translations in translating an English short story into Indonesian. This research used a short story written by Gerald Murnane entitled The Boy’s Name was David. By using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research explored two questions: the readability score of the translations and learners’ perceptions of this readability. Purposive sampling was employed by involving 18 EFL learners from Kurvadot Creative, a literature discussion community in Cepu, Indonesia. The data were collected through document, questionnaires, and focus group discussions. The readability assessment was analyzed by using Nababan’s Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) framework, while the EFL learners’ perceptions in the discussion was analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results revealed that learners generally rated the ChatGPT translations as Readable, with an average score of 2.68. However, the participants also identified several challenges. These included linguistic issues, such as issues with syntax, semantics, and stylistics, as well as reading engagement problems where the participants required more time to read certain parts of the translation. In addition, the untranslated sentences caused by ChatGPT's content policy restrictions added to the challenges. Despite the relatively high readability ratings, these factors disrupted participants' overall reading experiences with the translated short story by ChatGPT.
