Abstract

Vitamin D, or calciferol, is a fat-soluble vitamin produced endogenously when ultraviolet (UV) light triggers its synthesis in the skin. It also comes from food and supplements, existing as D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). Both forms convert into the active form, calcitriol, in the liver and kidneys, with D3 more effectively raising blood levels. Vitamin D supports bone health, regulates cellular functions, and offers anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective benefits. It improves skin health by regulating oil production, soothing inflammation, promoting skin renewal, and strengthening the skin barrier. Deficiency (<20 ng/dL) weakens the skin barrier, causing dryness and roughness. The global prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is rising, with Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, experiencing rates between 35.1% and 91.7%. This study explores the relationship between vitamin D levels and skin health, focusing on pores and roughness in geriatric populations. This cross-sectional study analyzed 26 elderly, measuring vitamin D levels (Vitamin D 25-hydroxy (25(OH)D), skin pore size, and roughness (RGB analysis), with Spearman and partial correlation assessing relationships while controlling for age. Bivariate analysis showed a significant positive relationship between vitamin D levels and pore size (p = 0.03) and a strong, statistically significant relationship between pore size and skin roughness (p < 0.01). Vitamin D influences skin health, including pore size and texture. Monitoring vitamin D levels enables early intervention, improving skin appearance, reducing roughness, and preventing complications from vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract

Vitamin D is a micronutrient required by the body. Vitamin D has various functions, including its potential to prevent depression. There are studies suggesting that people with depression are at risk of vitamin D deficiency. This study discusses the correlation between vitamin D and depression.  This is a cross-sectional study designed to investigate the relationship between vitamin D levels and depression in elderly (≥ 60 years) residing at Bina Bhakti Nursing Home. Participants who meet the criteria underwent measurement of vitamin D levels and assessment for depression using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Spearman correlation is used as the statistical analysis to evaluate the relationship between variables. 93 respondents met the criteria with average age of 74.19 years (61-97 years). 77 respondents were female (82.8%) and 16 respondents (17.2%) were male. The mean vitamin D level was 9.78 ng/ml (1.07-25.6ng/mL) and the mean GDS score was 4.51 (0-15). The results of the analysis showed a significant negative correlation between vitamin D levels and GDS scale (-0.287, p-value=0.005). Low vitamin D levels are associated with increased GDS scores, indicating that it is important for the elderly to fulfill their vitamin D needs as an preventive measure against depression

Abstract

Hydrated skin is an important indicator of overall skin health, as water content in the stratum corneum plays a vital role in maintaining the skin’s barrier function. Inadequate hydration can lead to dry skin, increase the risk of infections, and reduce quality of life. This activity aimed to assess skin water and oil levels among the elderly population at Hana Nursing Home to help prevent dry skin. The PDCA (Plan–Do–Check–Act) approach was used, which included planning the screening activities, measuring skin water and oil levels, evaluating the results, and providing skin care education for participants with abnormal findings. A total of 36 elderly residents at Hana Nursing Home, South Tangerang, participated in this program. The results showed that 20 individuals (55.56%) had low oil levels, while 24 individuals (66.67%) had low water levels. These findings highlight the importance of maintaining skin hydration through adequate fluid intake, regular use of moisturizers, and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Early detection of skin hydration status combined with education is effective in preventing dry skin and improving the quality of life in the elderly population.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that is increasingly found in the productive age population and can have a major impact on quality of life, especially due to risk complications such as heart disease, nerve disorders, retinopathy, and kidney damage. Early symptoms are often not recognized because they are considered minor complaints, such as fatigue or frequent urination, so many cases are not diagnosed in the early stages. The Community Service Program (PKM) implemented in Grogol Village aims to increase public awareness of the importance of early detection of diabetes through fasting blood sugar screening activities. This activity uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach, including checking glucose levels with the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) tool, as well as counseling on risk factors and prevention of diabetes. Of the 71 participants involved, 19 people (26.76%) were identified as having diabetes, 8 people (11.27%) had prediabetes, and the rest had blood sugar levels within normal limits. These results indicate that early screening is very important to prevent diabetes progression and severe complications, and is a foundation for building public awareness to maintain metabolic health sustainably.

Abstract

Liver dysfunction is a common health issue among the elderly and can significantly impact quality of life, particularly due to its progressive nature and frequently asymptomatic presentation in the early stages. Many older adults are unaware of liver problems, as mild symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal discomfort, or reduced appetite are often perceived as normal signs of aging. The Community Service Program (PKM) conducted at Panti Werdha Hana aimed to raise awareness among the elderly regarding the importance of early detection of liver dysfunction through SGOT and SGPT enzyme screening. This activity employed the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach, including laboratory examinations and interactive counseling on risk factors, healthy lifestyle practices, and the significance of regular health monitoring. Among the 76 participants, 10 individuals (13.16%) were found to have elevated SGOT levels, and 8 individuals (7.89%) had SGPT levels above the normal range. These findings underscore the importance of early detection in preventing the progression of chronic liver diseases, enhancing the quality of life of the elderly, and supporting more effective and sustainable healthcare interventions.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Hyperuricemia is a medical condition characterized by an increase in uric acid levels in the blood above normal limits, which can trigger various metabolic complications such as gouty arthritis, urate nephropathy, and cardiovascular disease. In the early stages, hyperuricemia is often asymptomatic, therefore routine investigation of uric acid level are an important step in early detection. The Community Service Program (PKM) implemented at the Asisi Church, Tebet District, aims to increase public awareness of the importance of early detection of hyperuricemia through blood uric acid level screening activities. This activity uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach, which includes capillary blood tests with Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) tools and education on risk factors, symptoms, and prevention of hyperuricemia. Of the 68 participants, all participants showed uric acid levels within the normal range. These results emphasize the importance of education and routine screening efforts to maintain uric acid levels within normal limits, prevent complications in the future, and build public awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle to maintain quality of life sustainably.

Abstract

Dyslipidemia is one of the most common metabolic disorders among the productive-age population and plays a major role in increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease and stroke. This condition often remains asymptomatic in its early stages, making regular monitoring of cholesterol and HDL levels a critical step in the early detection of atherosclerosis risk. Community-based screening programs revealed that 42.25% of participants had elevated total cholesterol levels, while 26.76% had very low HDL levels and 43.66% had low HDL levels. These findings highlight the urgency of early detection of dyslipidemia to prevent long-term complications that may impair individual quality of life. Through timely interventions involving nutritional education, dietary modifications, and increased physical activity, blood lipid levels can be effectively managed to prevent the progression of cardiometabolic disease and support long-term heart health.

Abstract

Pulmonary function disorders are commonly underdiagnosed health issues, especially in urban areas with high air pollution and prevalent smoking habits. Early detection through spirometry plays a crucial role in the promotion and prevention of respiratory diseases such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). However, public awareness and access to spirometry remain limited, including in the Tanjung Duren Selatan subdistrict of West Jakarta. This community service program was conducted using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle management approach. The target population consisted of productive-age residents willing to participate in health education and lung function screening. Spirometry examinations were conducted alongside interactive counseling about respiratory health and risk factors. Evaluation was carried out through spirometry results and participant satisfaction surveys. A total of 92 participants took part in the activity, consisting of 70 females (76.1%) and 22 males (23.9%), with a mean age of 43.78 years (SD ±12.93). The average Vital Capacity (VC) was 2.26 L, Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) was 2.13 L, and Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 Second (FEV1) was 1.95 L. The mean FEV1/FVC ratio was 107.12%, with 100% of participants showing normal lung function. This activity demonstrates that spirometry is an effective tool for monitoring lung function and increasing community awareness. Similar screening initiatives should be expanded to support early detection of respiratory disorders at the community level.
