Abstract

A major issue in classical fiqh is gender representation, where women are often positioned subordinate to men. Masāil al-Nisā’ constructs female identities and domestic roles through the repetition of socio-religious norms. This study analyzes the construction of gender in Masāil al-Nisā’ using the performativity theory of Judith Butler. It reveals how fiqh legitimizes binary norms, naturalizes masculine authority, and religiously reproduces women’s subordination within domestic and marital hierarchies. Employing a descriptive qualitative-interpretative approach, thematic analysis, and Butler’s gender performativity theory, the research analyzes primary texts and supporting literature to uncover constructions of women’s roles, identities, and subordination in domestic contexts. The study on Masāil al-Nisāʾ finds that women’s access to the public sphere is conditional and necessity-based with unclear moral regulation. Textual prohibitions against imitating the opposite sex reinforce binary gender divisions. Women are positioned as inherently domestic supporters of husbands or fathers with limited public roles. Although balance is emphasized, male authority in final decisions results in concealed gender subordination. This study concludes that Masāil al-Nisāʾ constructs a normative and hierarchical gender framework, conditionally granting women public space while consistently positioning men as the primary authority, thereby producing covert subordination in gender relations based on religious legitimacy. This study enriches Islamic gender studies, critiques the concept of women's nature (kodrat), state ibuism, and promotes critical reading of fiqh texts.

Abstract

This study examines how madrasah principals' leadership practices and school culture shape teacher performance in Muhammadiyah schools in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. While previous studies have extensively addressed leadership and school culture, evidence remains limited regarding the specific mechanisms by which faith-based leadership in Muhammadiyah madrasahs is manifested and experienced at the school level, particularly outside of key areas. Addressing this gap is crucial because leadership and culture are practical levers for strengthening teacher development and maintaining school quality in a values-based educational environment. This study employed a qualitative multiple case study design in three Muhammadiyah madrasahs in South Sulawesi. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with participants (madrasah principals, vice-principals, and teachers) who were purposively selected based on criteria such as position, minimum tenure, integration into professional development programs, and non-participant observation and document analysis (e.g., school policies and professional development records). Data were analyzed using thematic analysis through iterative coding, theme development, and cross-case comparison. Findings indicate that principals support teacher performance through (1) structured professional development planning (e.g., training/workshops aligned with teacher needs), (2) instructional supervision and feedback routines, (3) cultivating a collaborative culture (peer support, shared problem-solving), and (4) recognition practices that strengthen motivation and commitment. Based on these themes, we recommend strengthening needs-based professional development cycles, institutionalizing regular feedback and supervision protocols, and implementing transparent recognition criteria aligned with agreed-upon performance indicators.

Abstract

The phenomenon of workers in factories has become a real reality. Women as a living entity have become part of the family's economic life, but the spirit of work for women is part of religious expression. Work ethic, religion and regulations are part of the life of women factory workers in Kudus. This research aimed to observe the religious spirit embedded inside work ethic of female workers at PT. Rokok Djarum Kudus and the relationship of work ethic with religious fanatics that are part of women's lives. According to Sjafri Sairin's economic exchange and Mudrajad Kuntjoro's work ethic theories by qualitative analysis cross collected data by interviews, observations with purposive sampling, and documentation are the main parts of the study’s exploration. The research findings show that the very strict regulations from the company do not make them give up on their work but remain enthusiastic about building a productive work ethic. The work ethic of these female workers is evident in their daily factory work and their religious practices, both at work and at home. These female workers are able to provide a decent living for their families and the companies they work for.
