Abstract

This article examines religious moderation in the Malay Islamic educational tradition by analyzing the relationship between Islamic normativity, social practice, and local cultural wisdom. The study responds to the limited discussion that connects the normative concept of wasatiyyah with everyday educational practices in pesantren, surau, and Malay Islamic learning communities. This research employed a qualitative descriptive-interpretive literature review by examining classical Islamic texts, contemporary peer-reviewed studies, policy documents on religious moderation, and studies on Malay Islamic culture, pesantren, and local wisdom published mainly between 2018 and 2026. The findings show that religious moderation in Malay Islamic education is constructed through three interrelated dimensions: normative values such as tawassuth, tasamuh, tawazun, and i’tidal; social practices such as teacher exemplarity, dialogical learning, respect for difference, and community-based education; and local wisdom that functions as a cultural filter against exclusivist and transnational religious narratives. The study also finds that digital disruption challenges traditional religious authority and requires Malay Islamic educational institutions to strengthen religious moderation through contextual pedagogy, culturally grounded leadership, and digital literacy. The novelty of this article lies in its integrative reading of religious moderation as a dialectical process between Islamic normativity and Malay social practice. The study implies that strengthening religious moderation in Islamic education should not rely solely on formal curriculum, but also on institutional culture, local wisdom, teacher role modeling, and responsible digital engagement.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the principal’s perceptions of teacher competence and the principal’s attribution of the low quality of learning at SMA Negeri 1 Talang Ubi, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Regency. The study focused on the principal’s perceptions of four teacher competencies, namely pedagogical, professional, personal, and social competencies, as well as how the principal attributed the factors causing the low quality of learning originating from both internal and external school factors. This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the principal as the main informant, classroom observations, and documentation studies of learning devices and relevant school documents. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data trustworthiness was ensured through credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability tests by applying triangulation and member checking. The results showed that the principal generally had a positive perception of teacher competence in pedagogical, professional, personal, and social aspects. However, improvements were still required in terms of learning innovation and adaptation to evolving educational policies. The principal also attributed the low quality of learning relatively evenly to internal and external factors. Internal factors were related to teachers’ readiness and adaptability in implementing learning processes, while external factors included student characteristics, parental involvement, and limitations in school facilities and educational regulations. These findings indicate that the principal has an objective and constructive perspective in addressing issues related to learning quality and in formulating improvement efforts.

Abstract

The era of digital disruption has created paradigmatic challenges for Islamic education, particularly in maintaining the value of adab (civility) amidst the massive and unfiltered flow of information. This study aims to analyze the transformation of adab values in Malay Islamic education and formulate a strategy for inclusive and adaptive curriculum reorientation amidst the massive information technology boom. Using qualitative methods with a desk study approach, data were analyzed from various scientific literature on the reorientation of Islamic education and the digitalization of local wisdom. The results show that the transformation of adab in the Malay context involves not merely replacing learning media but rather reconstructing educational components that balance technological mastery with character building. The main findings emphasize that hybrid-Islamic Malay local wisdom—namely, the acculturation of local cultural values with Islamic teachings—plays a crucial role as a moral strengthening instrument for Generation Z in stemming deviant behavior in cyberspace, such as hoaxes and the degradation of manners. The manifestation of adab has transformed into "digital adab," where cyber media becomes not only a tool for delivering content but also a vehicle for reflection and spiritual role models. In conclusion, the synergy between the integration of Islamic values, strengthening Malay cultural identity, and digital cyber literacy is key to developing a generation that excels intellectually while maintaining moral dignity in the era of digital transformation.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of understanding Islamic education in higher education not only as a process of transmitting religious knowledge, but as a social practice that shapes academic culture, pedagogical interactions, Islamic identity, and moral responsibility of students. This research aims to analyze academic culture and the integration of Islamic values in Islamic higher education. The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed thematically-interpretively. The results of the study show that the integration of Islamic values takes place through six main forms, namely the formation of a religious academic culture, lecturer-student interaction as a medium for socializing values, a forum for academic-religious studies and activities, student awards and participation, Islamic education's response to social change, and a hidden curriculum in the formation of Islamic habitus. The values of manners, trust, discipline, responsibility, religiosity, respect for knowledge, and academic ethics are not only taught formally, but also habituated through campus symbols, lecturer examples, institutional routines, and daily social practices. This research confirms that Islamic universities function as a social space that simultaneously produces students' values, identity, academic culture, and moral orientation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze madrasah culture and the formation of students’ environmental care character through the Adiwiyata Program at MIN 2 Kota Palembang from the perspective of Islamic educational sociology. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation involving the head of madrasah, teachers, the Adiwiyata team, students, and relevant school personnel. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three main points. First, the Adiwiyata Program has been institutionalized as part of madrasah culture through environmental policies, curriculum integration, participatory activities, environmentally friendly facilities, and regular evaluation. Second, teachers play a central role as agents of value socialization through exemplary behavior and repeated habituation, such as classroom cleaning duties, waste collection, recycling activities, and plant care. Third, students’ environmental care character begins to develop from obedience to teachers’ instructions into social awareness, shown through keeping the classroom clean, disposing of waste properly, caring for plants, and reminding peers. However, this internalization still faces challenges, including inconsistent home habituation, peer influence, consumptive habits, waste volume, and limited supporting facilities. This study contributes to strengthening environmental character education in madrasah by showing that environmental care is formed not only through formal programs, but also through institutionalized culture, teacher role modeling, collective habituation, and sustainable social practices.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study highlights the contribution of madrasahs as Islamic educational institutions in facilitating social mobility in Indonesia. Through a systematic literature review, an analysis was conducted on the relationship between madrasah education, socio-economic status improvement, and shifts in the class structure of society. The findings reveal that madrasahs transcend their basic function as conveyors of religious values; they become a vital channel for vertical social mobility for the lower-middle class. Access to affordable education, combined with academic and religious skills, enables madrasahs to provide opportunities for segments of society that were previously marginalized from the formal education system. However, the effectiveness of this role is highly dependent on internal factors, such as teaching quality and curriculum, as well as external factors, including government policy and labor market dynamics. Therefore, strengthening the capacity of madrasahs to align religious competence with 21st-century skills is a crucial step in maximizing their impact on social transformation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the 21st-century dhikr assembly in the city of Palembang, particularly changes in construction, the expansion of social roles, and the factors driving its transformation within the lives of Muslim urban communities. This study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological-sociological-based field study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation in May–June 2025, involving dhikr assembly supervisors, active congregations, religious leaders, community leaders, government officials, and social actors involved in assembly activities. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis through the stages of transcription, repeated reading, initial coding, categorization, theme structuring, interpretation, and conclusion drawn. The results of the study show that the dhikr assembly in Palembang has transformed from a ritual-spiritual space into a dynamic, adaptive, and multifunctional urban socio-religious institution. The transformation can be seen in changes in the role of the guide, variations in dhikr readings, more communicative processions, heterogeneous congregations, expansion of activity venues, use of digital media, and the development of social, economic, recreative, and public programs. This research also found that the dhikr assembly maintains the Malay Islamic tradition through ratib, sanad, guidebooks, assembly manners, verses, hadrah, haul, and pilgrimage, while adapting to the needs of urban communities through social activities, youth involvement, informal economic activities, spiritual tourism, and digital da’wah. This study concludes that the dhikr assembly in Palembang represents a pattern of continuity and change, serving as a space for spiritual adaptation, the preservation of local Islamic traditions, and the social negotiation among urban Muslim communities.
