Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of field trip strategies in Frank McCourt’s Teacher Man (2005) and E.R. Braithwaite’s to Sir, With Love (1959) through the lens of comparative literature, which enables cross-textual analysis of pedagogical themes in different socio-cultural settings. A qualitative library research approach was employed, utilizing the method of comparative literary analysis in two stages. First, close reading and manual/digital annotation of both texts were conducted to identify recurring pedagogical themes, particularly those related to field trip planning, implementation, and impact. Thematic categories were developed inductively—focusing on (1) planning and structure of field trips, (2) student engagement and learning outcomes, and (3) socio-political challenges. To strengthen reliability, inter-rater coding was applied using the agreed framework, and a Cohen’s Kappa score of 0.82 was obtained, indicating substantial agreement. The analysis reveals two contrasting approaches: McCourt’s informal and unstructured trips, marked by minimal planning, result in limited educational outcomes, while Braithwaite’s well-organized museum visit leads to meaningful student engagement and reflection. Both texts reflect how socio-political factors—particularly racial prejudice and stereotyping—influence educational practice. Additionally, McCourt faces internal challenges related to classroom management and preparation. The findings highlight that effective field trip implementation requires not only strategic planning but also cultural sensitivity and awareness of systemic bias. These insights offer practical implications for contemporary educators seeking to design inclusive and impactful experiential learning experiences.

Abstract

The background of this research focuses on consumer protection in the practice of end-of-year discount sales from the perspective of Islamic economics. End-of-year discount practices often do not align with the principles of Islamic economics, which require transactions to be conducted with transparency, honesty, and fairness. This research uses the library research methodology, collecting and analyzing literature related to Islamic economics, consumer protection, and discount practices. The purpose of this research is to analyze the extent of consumer protection in end-of-year discount transactions and identify the application of Islamic principles in these practices. The results show that end-of-year discount practices often neglect Islamic principles such as fairness, transparency, and trustworthiness. Many businesses fail to provide clear product information, which can harm consumers. The study also finds that current regulations do not fully accommodate Islamic values, requiring enhanced oversight and education for both businesses and consumers. In conclusion, integrating Islamic principles into end-of-year discount transactions can improve consumer protection and create a more just economic ecosystem. The contribution of this research is to provide a new perspective for the development of consumer protection policies that align with Islamic economic principles.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of oral and written feedback on writing apprehension among introvert and extrovert EFL students using a 2 x 2 factorial design. A total of 108 university students, 47 introverts and 61 extroverts identified using the Eysenck Personality Inventory, participated in the study. Writing apprehension was measured using a validated questionnaire after students received both oral and written feedback during writing instruction. Paired samples t-tests revealed that introvert students experienced significantly higher writing apprehension when receiving oral feedback (t = 6.82, p < .001), while extrovert students reported significantly higher apprehension with written feedback (t = 4.23, p < .001). Two-way ANOVA results revealed significant main effects of personality type (F = 10.321, p = .002) and feedback mode (F = 5.921, p = .027). Importantly, a significant interaction effect was also found between personality type and feedback mode (F = 10.567, p = .002), indicating that students’ responses to feedback varied depending on their personality. Specifically, introvert students reported greater writing apprehension with oral feedback, whereas extrovert students experienced more apprehension with written feedback. These findings underscore the importance of adapting feedback strategies to individual learner characteristics. Tailoring feedback to align with students’ personality traits can help reduce writing apprehension and enhance instructional effectiveness in EFL writing classrooms.

Abstract

This study examines ecotourism as a lever for coastal community livelihood using the Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) on Lemukutan Island, Bengkayang Regency. The purpose of the research is to analyze how ecotourism development is related to the five livelihood capitals of the community, namely natural, human, social, physical, and financial capital. The research was conducted with a qualitative approach through case studies, using in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and focus group discussions, and supported by secondary data from official reports and scientific literature. The results of the study show that ecotourism on Lemukutan Island makes a significant contribution to increasing household income, expanding employment, and developing local businesses based on homestays, MSMEs, and tourism services. In terms of natural capital, the marine ecosystem that is still maintained is the main attraction, despite facing pressure due to the increasing number of tourists. Human capital develops through the involvement of youth and women in tourism management, although the limitations of formal training remain an obstacle. Social capital is reflected in the practice of mutual cooperation and the role of tourism-aware groups, while physical and financial capital is shown through infrastructure improvements, distribution of clean water, electricity, and increased sources of community income. These findings confirm that SLAs are relevant to understanding the dynamics of livelihoods in ecotourism, as well as to providing recommendations for strategies to strengthen community capacity and manage resources in a sustainable manner.
