Abstract

Self-regulation is a significant thing to achieve better learning process. Therefore, students with low self-regulation will find it hard to manage their time, be passive, and lazy during the learning process. In this, mindfulness was verified to mediate the relationship between future time perspective on self-regulation in learning. This correlational study involved 347 students sampled using a simple random sampling technique, while the data analysis was carried out using bias corrected bootstrapping. Findings revealed that future time perspective predicted mindfulness, self-regulation in learning, while mindfulness predicted self-regulation in learning. Lastly, it was found future time perspective could increase self-regulation in learning through mindfulness. The findings imply the importance of realizing self-awareness for students in terms of psychology and behavior in the learning process.

Abstract

Students’ discipline needs special attention in the aftermath of COVID-19 pandemic due to their online learning habit which somehow shifted the way they behaved during the pandemic. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a group guidance service with a humanistic existential approach based on Islamic spiritual values to improve students’ discipline. 20 students were involved as the samples and grouped into two, namely 10 for the experimental group and 10 for the control group. Here, the design was pretest and posttest, while the data were analyzed using a Wilcoxon test. Findings have proved that students’ discipline improved after receiving the group guidance service with a humanistic existential approach based on Islamic spiritual values. Thus, counselors are suggested to implement this intervention to improve students’ discipline

Abstract

Low academic engagement negatively affects students’ academics, such as poor attendance, lateness, lack of participation in learning, boredom, and some other problems which can cause students dropped out from a school. This study strived for examining the effectiveness of group counseling with a motivational interviewing approach to improve students’ academic engagement and comparing the effects when the intervention as given to students with high career maturity. It used a randomized pretest-posttest comparison group design and involved 30 students grouped into three selected using a random assignment. Their data were taken using academic engagement and career maturity scales with the alpha coefficients of 0.88 and 0.91 respectively. To analyze the data, mixed ANOVA was used. Findings showed that the group counseling with a motivational interviewing approach was effective to improve the academic engagement of students with both high and low career maturity. Further, the improvement was greater in the students with high career maturity. Lastly, implications and limitations are discussed in the discussion section.

Abstract

Smartphone usage problems contribute negative impacts on students’ physical and psychological development. Thus, the present study attempted to determine the effectiveness of CBT group counseling with a cognitive restructuring technique to reduce students’ smartphone usage problems through a randomized pretest-posttest control group design. This intervention was given to the experimental group, while the control group received the conventional counseling. Further, students’ data were collected using a smartphone addiction scale (SAS) whose reliability was 0.95 and was adapted using scientific procedures. Once the data collected, Wilcoxon signed rank and Mann-Whitney U tests were carried out. Findings showed that the CBT group counseling with a cognitive restructuring technique implemented gained more effective than that of conventional in the control group. Based on this finding, this study contributes to the improvement of a guidance and counseling service quality in terms of the use of CBT group counseling with a cognitive restructuring technique to reduce students’ smartphone usage problems

Abstract

Procrastination as an act of delaying assignments or work by doing things that are not related to assignments has the potential to become an obstacle to academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of self-management and cognitive restructuring of rational emotive behavior therapy counseling groups to reduce students' academic procrastination. By doing a pretest-posttest comparison it was applied to 12 students at SMP Negeri 3 Wangi-Wangi Selatan. The instrument used is the academic procrastination scale based on the indicators put forward. The data analysis technique used was the Mann-Whitney T-test paired sample. The results of this study indicate that the rational emotive behavior therapy group counseling approach, self-management techniques and cognitive restructuring techniques are effective in reducing students' academic procrastination. The findings of this study prove that group counseling, rational emotive behavior therapy approaches, self-management techniques and cognitive restructuring techniques are effective in reducing academic procrastination. Based on the findings of this study, a rational emotive behavior therapy group counseling intervention is recommended for counselors to reduce student academic procrastination.

Abstract

Technological developments, including the internet, are experiencing rapid progress. However, the internet can have a negative impact when its use is inappropriate, or called as problematic internet use (PIU). This study aimed to analyze the effects of parent-adolescent attachment, emotional regulation and self-esteem on problematic internet use (PIU). It involved 120 adolescents at public high schools throughout Tasikmalaya City using a purposive sampling technique. The questionnaires used in this study were the Adolescent Attachment Questionnaire (AAQ), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS 2). In analyzing the data, descriptive and multiple linear regression tests were used. The results of this study proved that parent-adolescent attachment had a positive effect on problematic internet use (PIU), emotional regulation had a positive effect on problematic internet use (PIU), self-esteem had a positive effect on problematic internet use (PIU). Lastly, it was revealed that parent-adolescent attachment, emotional regulation and self-esteem simultaneously had positive effects on problematic internet use (PIU). Further, implications and limitations of this study are discussed in the discussion.

Abstract

Self-control is important for students due to its impact on the learning process, self-control, and academic goals pursuit. This study aimed to determine the self-control level of SMA Teuku Umar students in Semarang. It used an experimental method with the design of randomized pretest-posttest control group and involved 14 students with low self-control level. Based on the results of Wilcoxon Signed Rank and Mann-Whitney tests, the intervention of reality group counselling has been effective to improve students’ self-control. Further implications and limitations are discussed in the discussion section.

Abstract

Low adolescent psychological well-being will have an impact on the lack of fulfilment of his psychological needs and bring up negative emotions. Thus, the present study attempted to analyze the relationship between social media addiction, hardiness, and emotional intelligence with psychological well-being and their implications for guidance and counselling. It used a correlational design with a sample of 335 students selected using the cluster proportionate stratified random sampling technique. Students’ data were collected using the Social Media Addiction Scale (SMAC) for the social media addiction, the DRS15 scale (Dispositional Resilience Scale: a short hardiness measure) for the hardiness, the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnare-Adolescent Short Form (TEIQue-ASF) scale for emotional intelligence, and the psychological well-being scale. The Findings showed that there was a relationship between social media addiction, hardiness, and emotional intelligence with psychological well-being. Thus, school counselors can make use of hardiness and emotional intelligence to improve psychological well-being through guidance and counseling services.

Abstract

Many students lack skills to complete career developmental tasks due to low career decision making self-efficacy. Thus, the present study tried to examine the effects of future time perspective on career decision making self-efficacy through positive affect viewed from social support. It used an ex post facto correlational design with the samples of 366 senior high school students in Banyuasin Regency. Some instruments were used to collect the data, such as Career Decision Making Self-Efficacy (CDMSE), Future Time Perspective (FTP), Positive Affect and Negative Affect (PANAS), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) that have been validated in terms of validity and reliability. Findings indicated that future time perspective had a significant effect on positive affect increase and career decision making self-efficacy. Besides, there was another significant relation between positive affect and career decision making self-efficacy. Lastly, there found an indirect effect of future time perspective on career decision making self-efficacy through positive affect and a moderator effect of social support on the relationship between future time perspective and career decision making self-efficacy. These findings have confirmed the potential of future time perspective, positive affect and social support on career decision making self-efficacy.

Abstract

Any guidance and counseling services at school will affect students’ development. Thus, all counseling programs at school must be in line with the school vision and missions to emerge innovations in problem-solving so that finally the counseling programs can result changes in students’ behavior and obtain public trust for the school. Regarding this background, the present study attempted to describe the implementation of guidance and counseling services at a senior high school level. It was a qualitative study which involved 9 subjects, namely one school counselor, a school principal, two subject teachers, two guardians, and three students selected using snowball and purposive sampling techniques. Their data were collected using interviews and analyzed using an interactive qualitative model, covering data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results were 1) the guidance and counseling model implemented at the Islamic senior high school was focused on Islamic counseling which emphasized religious aspects in its services, 2) both school counselors and subject teachers collaborated and provided services which were based on religious teachings, and 3) the collaboration increased public trust to school and resulted better counsellor performance. In conclusion, the guidance and counseling services at the school run well due to the collaboration between counsellors and stakeholders, not to mention the strategic counseling.
