Abstract

Psychological well-being (PWB) is important for prisoners, considering that they lead different lives and become increasingly depressed by being labeled as criminals by society. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of group counseling using a Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) approach to improve prisoners' PWB. A quasi-experimental design was employed, with repeated measurements (pre-test, post-test, and follow-up). The subjects were 14 Class II A prisoners in Pekalongan, Indonesia, prison, with seven inmates in the experimental group and seven in the control group. They were selected using the purposive sampling technique based on inclusion criteria and low PWB levels obtained from the psychological well-being scale. The study results indicate that group counseling using the SFBT approach is effective in increasing the PWB of prisoner’s pre-test vs. post-test (MD = -64.857, SE = 3.749, p<.05), and post-test vs. follow-up (MD = -71.571, SE = 3.479, p <.05). The study findings could be used as consideration, reference, and an alternative for counselors to use the SFBT approach in dealing with problems related to psychology, especially PWB.

Regarding previous studies, spiritual-religious attitudes and moral disengagement predict individuals’ academic dishonesty. To complete the gap of those studies, the current study investigated the role of moral disengagement to mediate the relationship between spiritual-religious attitudes and academic dishonesty in university students. There were 292 respondents from four universities in Semarang participated in this study. The authors used a cross-sectional study and utilized google form to collect the data. The authors conducted three analyses, regression-based path analysis, mediation analysis using bias-corrected and bootstrapping. The results showed that there was a direct relationship among all variables, but they're found no mediation effect on moral disengagement. These findings imply the importance of counseling services to preserve students’ morality so they could avoid academic dishonesty.

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of reality group counseling with confrontation and being-positive techniques on the improvement of students’ self-control. It used pretest and multiple posttest design. Further, purposive sampling technique was employed to select 21 experimental subjects to be placed in three groups randomly so that each consisted of seven students. The students’ data were collected using self-control scale. Based on mixed ANOVA test, the reality group counseling with confrontation and being-positive techniques gained (F (1,18) = 8.255, p <0.01). Moreover, the researchers found an interaction effect between time and group on students’ self-control, namely (F (2.13, 19.19) = 8.156, p <0.05). Thus, this study reveals that the combination of confrontation and being-positive techniques results an interesting implication and is suggested to be applied in the service of reality group counseling.

To do so, it used an experimental design of Randomized Pretest-Posttest Comparison Group by involving 30 students divided into three groups with 10 students in each. Based on Wilcoxon test results, the guidance group with both cinematherapy and role-playing techniques was effective to improve prosocial behavior indicated by the results of (Z=2.81, p<0.05) for cinematherapy, and (Z=2.81, p<0.05) for role playing. In the same way, the combination of both techniques was effective to improve prosocial behavior by gaining (Z=2.81, p<0.05). Additionally, the results of Kruskal Wallis test showed no significant difference in the level of effectiveness of the group with cinematherapy, role playing, and the combination of both techniques, namely (x2=0.23, p>0.05). These findings are expected to encourage counselors to conduct group guidance with cinematherapy and role-playing techniques to improve prosocial behavior.
