Abstract

Abstract

Tropical savannas and dry forests in Indonesia are important types of ecosystems which provide habitat to support various endemic wildlife. Several of these endemic species are now seriously threatened and accordingly have high conservation status according to IUCN, including the Bali starling (Leucopsar rotschildi) which is mostly now restricted to the Bali Barat National Park. Given the high extinction risk facing such species, conservation programmes are likely to require multidisciplinary approaches that address both the biological attributes of the species itself, as well as their habitat requirements. Regrettably, for many species, their habitat ecology remains inadequately understood. The objectives of this paper are to: 1) characterise the habitat of the Bali starling in terms of structure and floristic composition; and 2) document evidence of vegetation cover changes in the Bali Barat National Park. Analysis of remote sensing imagery as well as field sampling for vegetation attributes was conducted to address these objectives. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was calculated from Landsat imageries using red and near infrared bands. Tree cover percentage data were downloaded from Vegetation Continuous Fields (VCF) product from the University of Maryland’s website. Results showed that forest and savanna are the dominant land cover types in the Bali Barat National Park but their distribution is somewhat dynamic with changes in vegetation cover and greenness found across the years in which increasing cover of woody plants is the general trend. In the Bali Barat National Park, the Bali starling is mostly found at or near distinct vegetation boundaries, such as the border between savanna-forest; savanna-cropland; savanna-shrubland; settlement-cropland; and forest-shrubland. Although Cekik area had planted species that has been known to be able to provide shelter and food for Bali Starling (so was Brumbun), the bird has not been observed to be presence in the area since the 1990s. These results further confirm the importance of examining habitat patterns of endemic bird within a landscape that are influenced by multiple factors that interact in space and time. Addressing data shortage in habitat patterns within endemic species distribution is important for conservation managers developing conservation management strategies. Evaluating the remaining habitat of the species is important for conservation of Bali starling and useful for the reintroduction and release program to their natural habitat.

Abstract

At a local scale, vegetation patterns are known to have strong relationships with edaphic factors. In the case of Mt. Merapi volcanic eruption, studies on the relationships between edaphic factors and plant community composition and distribution following the nuees ardentes-ignited wildfires will provide valuable information on post-disturbance secondary successional processes. We collected soil and vegetation data from five different ages of nuees ardentes fire-affected secondary succession forests and one un-affected forest. Our results showed significant correlation of species composition and edaphic factors among sites of secondary forests. Nitrogen and soil water content were found to be the important factors in structuring species composition in the youngest site, where the N-fixing legume species such as Calliandra callothyrsus was found to be dominant. CCA ordination also revealed strong negative correlation between nitrogen content and legume group, while non-legume group were positively correlated with other edaphic factors such as phosphor and potassium. These findings suggested that changes in soil properties due to recovery of this system after volcanic eruption correlated with plant community composition and can be crucial factors in driving the successional trajectory. Understanding ecosystem reassembly process and trajectory of succession will improve how we approach the restoration of Mt. Merapi ecosystem.

Abstract

In the late 1960s, Acacia nilotica was introduced to Baluran National Park to establish fire breaks which would prevent the spread of fire from Baluran Savanna to the adjacent teak forest. However, A. nilotica has spread rapidly and has threatened the existence of Baluran Savanna as it has caused an ecosystem transition from an open savanna to a closed canopy of A. nilotica in some areas. This study is one of the few that examines A. nilotica invasion in Baluran National Park through remote sensing. Land cover dynamics were quantified using a supervised classification approach on Landsat 7 and 8 multi-spectral images. Results showed that savanna and A. nilotica can be recognized using a composite of bands 6, 5 and 3 of the Landsat 8 image. Across a 14-year period (2000-14), A. nilotica has spread far north and south from its originally introduced location, invading not only savannas but also dry forests in the Baluran National Park. The savanna size has decreased by 1,361 ha, meanwhile the A. nilotica stand has increased by 1,886 ha over this period. Spatial distribution of A. nilotica in Baluran National Park showed a clumped pattern. Acacia nilotica which develops into a homogeneous stand in the north-west and eastern parts of the national park occupied an area of 3,628 ha or about 14.5% of the total area. This study has demonstrated that remote sensing technology can be effectively used to estimate the patterns of distribution and amount of A. nilotica cover change over the whole Baluran National Park. This is one advantage of remote sensing and GIS, as it is difficult and expensive to make such direct assessments using the conventional approach of field survey and vegetation analysis.

Abstract

Multicultural education is increasingly important in the context of globalization that affects cultural and religious diversity in society. This research aims to explore the philosophical basis of multicultural education through the interpretation of the Qur'an and the role of hermeneutic approaches in Islamic religious education. The research method uses a Systematic Literature Review based on the Scopus database from 2022 to 2025 by analyzing Scopus-indexed scientific articles related to multiculturalism, Islamic education, and hermeneutics. From the search results, it was found that 229 articles were filtered into 37 relevant articles, and finally 20 articles that met the inclusion criteria were selected for further analysis. The results of the study show that the interpretation of the Qur'an with a contextual hermeneutic approach provides a strong philosophical basis for multicultural education with the values of inclusivity, justice, and respect for diversity. This research also identifies the important contribution of hermeneutics in enriching the interpretation of Qur'anic values that support a more inclusive and tolerant education. The conclusion in this study is that Islamic religious education based on Qur'anic values can create a harmonious and pluralistic society if applied with a more critical and contextual approach. The main contribution of this article is to fill the research gap on the application of Qur'an interpretation in multicultural education and to introduce a broader hermeneutic approach in the context of Islamic religious education in an increasingly diverse society.
