Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of integrating online self-regulated learning with virtual labs in enhancing critical thinking skills among STEM students. The research adopted a controlled experimental design involving two groups—experimental and control—over a two-month period, employing a mix of interactive virtual labs and structured online self-regulated learning strategies for the former, while maintaining traditional educational methods for the latter. Results indicated significant improvements in the experimental group's critical thinking capabilities across multiple indicators such as interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation, compared to modest improvements in the control group. The experimental group benefited from a dynamic and interactive learning environment that allowed for hands-on experiments and simulations, fostering a deeper understanding and engagement with scientific concepts. This environment, enhanced by the strategic application of self-regulated learning techniques, facilitated a more effective development of critical thinking skills than traditional methods. The study highlighted the potential of virtual labs combined with self-regulated learning to significantly enhance educational outcomes in STEM education, suggesting that such integrative approaches could better prepare students for the complexities of the modern scientific landscape. Additionally, the study underscored the need for future research to explore these strategies across a more diverse and broader educational context to confirm these findings and further refine the educational interventions employed.

Abstract

This study addresses the need to foster students’ creativity in physics learning, particularly on abstract topics such as sound waves, through instruction that is more meaningful, contextual, and culturally relevant. Conventional physics teaching at the junior secondary level often remains teacher-centered and procedural, limiting opportunities for students to explore ideas and develop creative thinking. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether ethnoscience-based physics learning on the topic of sound waves could improve students’ creativity, to determine the extent of improvement, and to describe how creativity emerged during the learning process. The study employed an embedded mixed-methods design. Quantitatively, it used a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 20 Grade VIII students from one junior high school in Mataram City, Indonesia. Qualitatively, classroom observations, field notes, and learning documentation were used to capture students’ engagement and manifestations of creativity. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, N-gain, and one-way repeated measures ANOVA, while qualitative data were analyzed through descriptive thematic analysis. The results showed a substantial improvement in students’ creativity. The mean score increased from 43.75 in the pretest to 81.38 in the posttest, with a mean N-gain of 0.80. The repeated measures ANOVA indicated a significant effect, F(1, 19) = 491.97, p < .001, with a very large effect size (partial eta squared, η² = 0.963). Qualitative findings revealed increased participation, richer idea generation, and stronger connections between physics concepts and local cultural contexts. It is recommended that ethnoscience-based learning be applied more widely in physics instruction and examined further across broader contexts and topics.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the verbal exegesis of Tuan Guru Zainuddin Abdul Madjid (1908-1997) on QS. Al-Maidah/5: 44-45. Tuan Guru was a traditional Islamic scholar born out of the Madrasah Shaulatiyyah in Mecca. This research is important for two reasons: first, it provides insights into how the Quran, exegesis, and the context during the colonial period are intertwined; second, it explains how exegesis serves as a historical document of the Lombok community where Tuan Guru lived. The hypothesis is that Tuan Guru’s verbal exegesis is a contextual interpretation emerging from the context of the struggle to maintain Indonesia's independence in 1946. Consequently, he refers to the term "colonizers" in his interpretation of QS. Al-Maidah/5: 44-45. The theoretical framework used in this study is Karl Mannheim's Sociology of Knowledge theory. This theory assumes that understanding anything is impossible without understanding its social constructs. The primary source for this research is an interview with one of Tuan Guru’s students, documented in a book. The secondary sources include books and journal articles that discuss Tuan Guru’s history. The research will be conducted by: first, collecting the necessary primary data; second, analyzing this data; third, presenting the findings in a logical and systematic manner. These three processes aim to clarify the results or conclusions of this study. The findings reveal that Tuan Guru’s interpretation encompasses four social constructs: first, the context of the attack on the NICA military post; second, awareness of religious authority; third, a strong connection with Madrasah Shaulatiyyah; fourth, Tuan Guru’s experiences before traveling to Mecca

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the principle of justice (al-‘adl) in mudharabah contracts within Islamic Microfinance Institutions (LKMS) in Indonesia. The rapid growth of the Islamic economy demands the application of contracts that align with Islamic values, one of which is mudharabah—a partnership between the shahibul maal (capital provider) and the mudharib (entrepreneur)—based on fair and transparent profit-sharing principles. The research employs a qualitative method using a library research approach and a comparative analysis between the concepts of fiqh muamalah and modern regulations such as the DSN-MUI fatwas and OJK regulations concerning LKMS. The findings reveal that, conceptually, the mudharabah contract reflects the value of justice through the balance of rights and obligations between capital owners and business managers. However, in practice, LKMS still face several challenges, including institutional dominance in determining profit-sharing ratios (nisbah), low transparency in business reporting, and weak sharia supervision. These issues indicate a gap between the normative principles of fiqh muamalah and their regulatory implementation in practice. This study recommends the formulation of maqashid sharia-based contract frameworks, the enhancement of human resource capacity in fiqh muamalah and Islamic accounting, and the strengthening of the Sharia Supervisory Board’s function to ensure comprehensive implementation of justice in every contract.
