Abstract

Non-formal learning activities in Islamic boarding schools have an important role in improving the ability of students, including in mastering Arabic. This study aims to describe the level of interest of students in participating in the Arabic Afternoon Circle activity at the Muharrikun Najaah Islamic Education Center and analyze the factors that influence it in the perspective of Islamic educational psychology. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study showed that the interest of students was influenced by internal factors such as motivation, learning needs, and perception of lessons; as well as external factors such as the relationship between teachers and students, the learning environment, and the design of non-formal learning. These findings are relevant to the theory of learning interest and motivation in Islamic educational psychology, as well as supported by previous research emphasizing the importance of positive relationships between teachers and learners (Apriliano & Shobahiya, 2024), religious discipline in character formation (Abror & Shobahiya, 2024), as well as the dynamics of learning behavior of generation Z (Firdayanti & Shobahiya, 2024). This research emphasizes that non-formal activities such as Lingkar Sore are strategic spaces to foster students' interest in learning holistically, both from cognitive, affective, and spiritual aspects.

Abstract

The moral and spiritual crisis that occurs in the midst of scientific and technological advances shows that there is an inequality in the modern educational process that emphasizes too much on the intellectual aspect and ignores the spiritual dimension of humans. In the Islamic view, human beings have a complete essence, including elements of the body, intellect, spirit, and nafs that must be developed in a balanced manner. This research aims to analyze the concept of human nature from an Islamic perspective and outline its implications for the philosophy of Islamic education. Using a qualitative approach based on literature study, this study found that human nature is the ontological, epistemological, and axiological foundation for Islamic education. Islamic education is ideally directed to form kamil people through the integration of intellectual, moral, and spiritual development. The implications of this study emphasize that the philosophy of Islamic education must be oriented towards the formation of people who are faithful, knowledgeable, and civilized, so that they are able to answer the challenges of the times while supporting the development of superior human resources and character within the framework of monotheistic values.

Abstract

This research investigates how parental roles contribute to shaping discipline and achievement of santri (Islamic boarding school students) within a pesantren environment. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with homeroom teachers, musyrif (supervisors), 30 parents, and 30 santri at Muharrikunnajaah Islamic Education Center; direct observation; and documentation. Participants were selected via purposive sampling from diverse regional, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Data analysis employed an interactive model consisting of data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, with source triangulation ensuring validity. The findings reveal that parental roles significantly impact santri discipline and achievement. The pesantren facilitates this through regular monthly telephone calls, weekly letters containing progress reports and advice, and and food delivery twice a month. Of 30 santri studied, 15 who received authentic advice from parents, characterized by encouragement for worship discipline, learning motivation, and positive role modelling, demonstrated high discipline levels and superior achievement, with 15 ranking in top five of their classes and 5 winning academic and non-academic competitions. Conversely, 15 santri receiving inconsistent advice showed different outcomes: 6 received disciplinary warnings for violations, while others maintained discipline but achieved lower academic grades (70-80 versus 85-95). This research concludes that parental roles, facilitated by pesantren, are crucial in forming disciplined and achieving santri. The study contributes theoretically to understanding Islamic value transmission through families as harmonious ta'dib (Islamic education) and practically by encouraging family-pesantren collaboration to prevent moral degradation and support contemporary Islamic civilization advancement.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the mabit program as a tahfidz murajaah camp in enchancing students religious self-regulation at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta. The two-day mabit camp is designed to optimize student’s Qur’an memorization performance and spiritual readiness prior to the Tahfidz examination. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving tahfidz supervisors, program participants, and activity coordinators. The results indicate that the mabit program effectively enhances religious self-regulation, as reflected in improvements in spiritual motivation, discipline in worship, time management during murajaah, self-control toward distractions, and mental calmness when facing examinations. Supporting factors include an intensive mentoring system, a structured spiritual environment, and reflective practices (muhasabah), while inhibiting factors involve students’ differences in adaptability, fear of failure, and physical fatigue during the camp. This study concludes that the MABIT program not only contributes to improved Tahfidz memorization outcomes but also plays an important role in shaping students’ religious self-regulation as a crucial component within the field of Islamic psychology.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore and explain the application of student management strategies in supporting academic and non-academic success at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Simpon Surakarta and SMPIT Nur Hidayah Surakarta. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research is grounded in a phenomenological field study approach. Data were gathered through a combination of direct observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Data analysis follows the interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman, which includes three essential phases: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. To ensure the reliability and validity of the findings, the research incorporates triangulation methods involving both different techniques and multiple data sources. Findings reveal that both schools implement a well-organized student management framework encompassing planning, execution, and evaluation processes. The planning phase involves activities such as organizing the New Student Admission Committee (PPDB), selecting new students, and conducting talent and interest development programs. During the implementation phase, schools run extracurricular activities, character education initiatives, and various academic support programs. Evaluation is performed regularly through coordination meetings, achievement tracking, and the use of digital tools like Google Forms for self-assessment and reflection. This research concludes that integrated and adaptive student management significantly enhances student motivation, academic outcomes, and personal development. Despite contextual differences between the two institutions, both have effectively adopted management strategies tailored to student needs. The study highlights the critical role of aligning educational management practices with individual student development to establish a well-rounded and impactful educational experience

Abstract

The mental health of students at the Al-Amin Islamic Boarding School in Palur is a serious concern due to academic pressure and environmental adaptation challenges that trigger anxiety disorders. The focus of this study is to identify triggers for psychological anxiety and evaluate the management strategies implemented by caregivers. This research uses a qualitative case study approach through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and descriptive documentation analysis. The research findings reveal that students' anxiety stems from the demands of public speaking, exams, and the dynamics of social interactions. Management strategies are implemented through three main pillars: providing consistent moral support, a spiritual approach through routine Tahajud prayers and dhikr, and providing private counseling facilities. The results indicate that although spiritual interventions are very effective in calming the mind, barriers such as mental health stigma and family reluctance to provide internal student data still hinder optimal recovery. The main conclusion emphasizes that managing anxiety in Islamic boarding schools requires a more structured early detection system and open communication patterns between the institution and parents. Strengthening professional mental health facilities is urgently needed to ensure that students are able to develop their potential in a healthy, resilient, and balanced manner amidst the dynamics of rigorous dormitory life in a sustainable manner for their future through the integration of psychological services and complete spiritual recovery for education.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the strategic role of the principal as a builder of a professional and religious work ecosystem in an Islamic-based vocational education institution. The purpose of this study is to explore the leadership model implemented by the principal of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta in managing vocational education based on Islamic values. The research method used is descriptive qualitative through field research with data collection techniques in the form of structured interviews, direct observation, and document review. Data analysis adopted the Miles and Huberman framework which includes information condensation, presentation of results, and formulation of conclusions. The results show that the principal applies an integrative-contextual leadership style that harmoniously combines four main approaches: transformational, servant leadership, collective-collegial, and distributed. The transformational element is reflected in the development of vision and motivation for innovation; the servant aspect is seen in empathy and commitment to teacher competency development; the collegial-participatory approach is manifested in the deliberation mechanism; and distributed leadership is carried out through the delegation of balanced authority to the management team. This leadership model has a positive impact on improving academic standards, strengthening the religious atmosphere, and aligning graduates with the demands of the workplace. The study's conclusions confirm that leadership effectiveness in Islamic vocational schools is determined by the leader's ability to be adaptive and multidimensional in responding to the institution's internal and external dynamics.

Abstract

This study is grounded in the need to present a model of character education that goes beyond conceptual value transmission and is realized through consistent daily habituation. The tarbiyah program at Pondok Pesantren Jannatul Qur’an Boyolali integrates character formation into the students’ twenty-four-hour daily activities. This research aims to describe the strategies of character formation implemented through the program and to identify the character values that emerge within the boarding school environment. The study employs a field research design with a descriptive qualitative approach, using participatory, interviews with the mudir, teachers, and student administrators, as well as documentation of daily activities. The findings reveal that character formation is carried out through four main strategies: teacher role modeling, the cultivation of proper conduct in daily interactions, the involvement of students in responsibility and independence, and the habituation of worship and spiritual discipline as foundational elements. These strategies are embedded in the collective life pattern of the boarding school, enabling character values to be internalized through repeated lived experiences rather than mere verbal instruction. The impact is reflected in the development of integrity, discipline, social empathy, courtesy, independence, trustworthiness, religiosity, and self-control among students. The effectiveness of the program is supported by consistent teacher exemplarity and a well-structured boarding school environment, although challenges arise from students’ diverse backgrounds and the tendency toward formal compliance without deep value internalization. Overall, the tarbiyah program represents a holistic, contextual, and practical model of character education.
