Abstract

This study aims to systematically map the research trends in doctoral dissertations produced by Ph.D., candidates in the English Language Education Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar over the past three years (2021–2023). The objectives are threefold: (1) to describe the topics explored in doctoral dissertations, (2) to analyze the research approaches and methodologies employed by doctoral students, and (3) to identify research gaps that require further exploration to enrich the field of English Language Education. Employing a content analysis framework, 63 dissertations archived between 2021 and 2023 were systematically reviewed. The findings indicate a clear thematic shift from literacy- and culture-based studies (2021) toward the integration of digital technologies and advanced pedagogical innovations (2022), culminating in the use of artificial intelligence, hybrid learning, dialogic feedback, and 21st-century skills frameworks (2023). From a methodological perspective, the research trajectory evolved from qualitative ethnographic inquiries in 2021, toward mixed methods and research and development (R&D) designs in 2022 and 2023. Despite this progress, research gaps remain in three major areas: (1) language assessment and test validation, (2) longitudinal studies capturing long-term effects of learning innovations, and (3) equity and inclusion in EFL contexts such as remote, marginalized, and special needs learners. The study contributes to theoretical enrichment by extending the literature on doctoral-level research mapping in ELT, and offers practical and policy implications for doctoral candidates, supervisors, and program administrators.

Two teachers implemented it by: (1) achievement or compensatory strategies were used when explaining English material, usually mixing two languages, namely English and Indonesian, used by translating words one by one when students did not understand the sentences the teacher said, then used by the two teachers sign language such as when doing pantonyms, facial expressions and voice intonation apart from that it was used by reconstructing sentences without changing the meaning to be conveyed, and was used by describing or paraphrasing an object or target of action. (2) the strategy of stalling or time gaining, used by buying time when both teachers forget the words or sentences, they want to convey, and (3) interactional strategies, used by means of the ongoing learning process and finding expressions of lack of understanding trendy the form of words and forgetting how to pronounce them correctly, the teacher collaborates with students to find out the meaning or ask for help in understanding the word and pronounce it.

Abstract

This study presents a comparative analysis of Indonesia's Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and the newly implemented Merdeka Curriculum, utilizing Richards' curriculum development theory as a theoretical framework. Through document analysis, teacher interviews, and classroom observations across multiple Indonesian schools, this research examines both curricula across six key dimensions: goals, content, pedagogy, assessment, flexibility, and teacher autonomy. Findings reveal that while CBC emphasizes standardized competencies and measurable outcomes, the Merdeka Curriculum offers greater flexibility, student-centered approaches, and enhanced teacher autonomy. The transition reflects Indonesia's educational reform agenda to address 21st-century learning needs while respecting local contexts. Richards' framework proves particularly valuable in identifying systematic strengths and weaknesses in both approaches. The Merdeka Curriculum demonstrates significant potential for fostering creativity and critical thinking but faces implementation challenges related to resource distribution and teacher readiness. This study offers insights for policymakers, curriculum developers, and educational practitioners navigating curriculum reforms in similar contexts.

Abstract

This research attempts to find out the use of dialogue-based English worksheets in fostering students' speaking skills. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental research design was used in this study. The sample of the study consisted of 29 students of class X.E.3 who were selected using a cluster sampling technique. Pre- and post-tests were used to gather data. The t-test value was less than P (0.000 <0.05), showing that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. The data analysis results showed that the use of dialogue-based English worksheets significantly enhanced students' speaking abilities. Therefore, it can be said that the usage of dialogue-based English worksheets in class X.E.3 at SMAN 4 Maros is helpful in improving students' speaking abilities in English classes. By providing realistic conversation scenarios, dialog-based English worksheets help students improve their writing skills and allow them to practice writing in an authentic context. Through this exercise, students can develop confidence, communication skills, and a sense of self-esteem by using the right expressions and tone. In addition, these worksheets encourage active interaction between students and teachers so that students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and spontaneous responses in English.

Abstract

This study investigated Grade VIII learners’ perceptions of using question games to improve speaking skills in an Indonesian EFL classroom. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research drew on classroom observations, four focus group discussions, reflective journal entries, and a students’ perception questionnaire (data collection conducted over four weeks) to capture both collective and individual experiences. Thematic analysis revealed consistently positive learner responses: students reported heightened enjoyment and motivation, increased confidence in speaking, greater incidental vocabulary acquisition, and a clear preference for small-group game formats that lowered affective barriers to participation. Quantitative summary data from the questionnaire corroborated these themes. Pedagogically, the findings indicate that question games can create low-pressure, interaction-rich opportunities that support fluency and willingness to communicate, provided they are complemented by teacher scaffolding and vocabulary reinforcement. Limitations include the single-class setting and short intervention period; future research should employ longitudinal designs, larger and more varied samples, and objective measures of speaking gains to triangulate perceptual evidence.

Abstract

This study investigates the quality of paragraph writing in dissertation abstracts composed by doctoral students in the English Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Motivated by recurring challenges in abstract writing, particularly in terms of coherence, cohesion, and academic language use, this research aims to identify strengths and weaknesses within student abstracts and evaluate the presence of essential abstract components. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the study analyzed nine abstracts written over the past five years using document analysis and the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that while most abstracts include key components—such as background, objectives, methods, and results—they often lack explicit concluding statements. Strengths identified include clear topic sentences, formal academic tone, and logical organization. However, issues such as limited use of cohesive devices, partial coherence, redundancy, and verbosity were prevalent in several abstracts. These shortcomings hinder the overall clarity and impact of the writing. The study highlights the importance of structured academic writing training, particularly utilizing cohesion strategies and effective summarization. The results offer valuable insights for enhancing doctoral-level academic writing instruction and can serve as a foundation for further research into writing pedagogy in English as a second language contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates Indonesian lecturers’ perceptions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in translation education, focusing on how technology reshapes pedagogy, student engagement, and institutional practices. Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with lecturers who actively integrated AI tools into translation teaching. Thematic analysis identified five major findings: perceived benefits of AI for efficiency and accessibility, pedagogical shifts and curriculum integration, challenges of student dependence and diminished critical thinking, ethical and responsible use of AI tools, and AI as a catalyst for institutional and administrative efficiency. While lecturers acknowledged AI’s transformative potential in facilitating translation tasks, they also highlighted risks of overreliance, ethical dilemmas, and uneven access. The study concludes that integration requires balancing technological affordances with humanistic values, fostering critical AI literacy, and embedding ethical considerations in pedagogy. These findings contribute to ongoing debates on AI-enhanced translation pedagogy in global higher education institutions.
