Abstract

This study investigated Grade VIII learners’ perceptions of using question games to improve speaking skills in an Indonesian EFL classroom. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research drew on classroom observations, four focus group discussions, reflective journal entries, and a students’ perception questionnaire (data collection conducted over four weeks) to capture both collective and individual experiences. Thematic analysis revealed consistently positive learner responses: students reported heightened enjoyment and motivation, increased confidence in speaking, greater incidental vocabulary acquisition, and a clear preference for small-group game formats that lowered affective barriers to participation. Quantitative summary data from the questionnaire corroborated these themes. Pedagogically, the findings indicate that question games can create low-pressure, interaction-rich opportunities that support fluency and willingness to communicate, provided they are complemented by teacher scaffolding and vocabulary reinforcement. Limitations include the single-class setting and short intervention period; future research should employ longitudinal designs, larger and more varied samples, and objective measures of speaking gains to triangulate perceptual evidence.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates how undergraduate students use the QuillBot Paraphraser to minimize plagiarism in the process of writing their thesis proposals. Conducted in December 2024 at the English Education Department of STKIP YPUP Makassar, the research employed purposive sampling to select five students who were actively working on their proposals and had prior experience using QuillBot. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and supported by document analysis using Turnitin plagiarism reports. The findings revealed that students generally follow a structured paraphrasing process. Students reported significant improvements in sentence structure, vocabulary use, and a noticeable reduction in similarity percentages on Turnitin. The study concludes that QuillBot can effectively support the minimization of plagiarism and improvement of academic writing quality.

Abstract

This study investigates the quality of paragraph writing in dissertation abstracts composed by doctoral students in the English Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Motivated by recurring challenges in abstract writing, particularly in terms of coherence, cohesion, and academic language use, this research aims to identify strengths and weaknesses within student abstracts and evaluate the presence of essential abstract components. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the study analyzed nine abstracts written over the past five years using document analysis and the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that while most abstracts include key components—such as background, objectives, methods, and results—they often lack explicit concluding statements. Strengths identified include clear topic sentences, formal academic tone, and logical organization. However, issues such as limited use of cohesive devices, partial coherence, redundancy, and verbosity were prevalent in several abstracts. These shortcomings hinder the overall clarity and impact of the writing. The study highlights the importance of structured academic writing training, particularly utilizing cohesion strategies and effective summarization. The results offer valuable insights for enhancing doctoral-level academic writing instruction and can serve as a foundation for further research into writing pedagogy in English as a second language contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates Indonesian lecturers’ perceptions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in translation education, focusing on how technology reshapes pedagogy, student engagement, and institutional practices. Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with lecturers who actively integrated AI tools into translation teaching. Thematic analysis identified five major findings: perceived benefits of AI for efficiency and accessibility, pedagogical shifts and curriculum integration, challenges of student dependence and diminished critical thinking, ethical and responsible use of AI tools, and AI as a catalyst for institutional and administrative efficiency. While lecturers acknowledged AI’s transformative potential in facilitating translation tasks, they also highlighted risks of overreliance, ethical dilemmas, and uneven access. The study concludes that integration requires balancing technological affordances with humanistic values, fostering critical AI literacy, and embedding ethical considerations in pedagogy. These findings contribute to ongoing debates on AI-enhanced translation pedagogy in global higher education institutions.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menganalisis penggunaan buku kegiatan harian untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui penggunaan buku kegiatan harian untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa kelas sepuluh SMA Negeri 1 Mamuju. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian quantitative dengan desain quasi eksperimen. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa SMA Negeri 1 Mamuju. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X B yang terdiri dari 21 siswa sebagai kelas eksperimen dan X C yang terdiri dari 24 siswa sebagai kelas control. Peneliti menggunakan tes menulis dan interview sebagai instrument penelitian. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan buku harian dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa kelas sepuluh SMA Negeri 1 Mamuju. Hal ini menggambarkan bahwa penggunaan buku kegiatan harian dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa kelas sepuluh SMA Negeri 1 Mamuju.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi kesesuaian buku teks bahasa Inggris yang digunakan di MTs. Barana dengan standar buku ajar yang baik. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan buku teks bahasa Inggris untuk kelas 7 SMP, dan seorang guru bahasa Inggris sebagai subjek dalam penelitian ini. Dalam pengumpulan data, instrumen penelitian dalam penelitian ini adalah wawancara dan checklist. Wawancara dilakukan dengan guru bahasa Inggris untuk mendapatkan informasi mengenai kelayakan buku teks bahasa Inggris. Peneliti menemukan bahwa berdasarkan hasil evaluasi buku teks, dari empat kategori standar buku teks yang baik, (1) terdapat satu kategori untuk buku teks 1 “When English Rings a Bell” yang memiliki nilai rendah yaitu kesesuaian grafik, khususnya untuk bagian penutup buku teks, mendapat skor persentase 60% (netral). (2) Pada buku ajar 2 “Bahasa Inggris untuk Nusantara” hanya terdapat satu kategori yang mempunyai skor rendah yaitu kesesuaian grafik khususnya pada bagian penutup buku teks dengan persentase skor sebesar 78,7% (sesuai). Secara keseluruhan, dilihat dari kebutuhan siswa terhadap buku teks bahasa Inggris, buku teks 2 lebih sesuai dengan kebutuhan mereka dibandingkan buku teks 1.

Abstract

This study aims to  investigates the preferences of junior high school students concerning printed versus digital English learning resources at MTsN Makassar. The research included 120 students from Grade IX who completed a structured questionnaire, along with 10 individuals in semi-structured interviews. In the process of data analysis, we employed descriptive and inferential statistical techniques for quantitative data, while qualitative responses underwent thematic evaluation. The research shows that scholars have a distinct liking for electronic learning content (M = 4.04, SD = 0.7) as opposed to their printed resources (M = 3.19, SD = 0.8). Students noted that characteristics like accessibility, interactivity, and engagement serve as important advantages of digital resources, while printed materials were credited with enhancing concentration and readability. Independent samples t-tests revealed no significant differences based on gender (p > .05); however, students with access to digital devices at home exhibited a significantly higher preference for digital formats (p = .040). The thematic analysis revealed three primary themes: (1) the engagement with digital media and the enjoyment it provides, (2) the motivation derived from easy access and constructive feedback, and (3) the essential task of aligning resource allocation with emerging challenges. Studies suggest that applying mixed learning techniques, combining internet-based and physical resources, can facilitate inclusiveness, amplify student interest, and improve the thoroughness of educational experiences in English Language Teaching (ELT).

Abstract

Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk menerapkan metode Word of the Week (WOW) yang dipadukan dengan media digital sebagai strategi untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas VII dan VIII di SMP Aisyiyah Sungguminasa. Latar belakang kegiatan ini adalah rendahnya penguasaan kosakata siswa yang disebabkan oleh metode pembelajaran yang monoton serta kurangnya paparan terhadap kosakata baru. Kegiatan ini menggunakan pendekatan berbasis praktik nyata dengan pelaksanaan selama bulan April 2025. Setiap minggu, siswa diperkenalkan dengan kosakata baru melalui media visual berbasis Canva dan audio pelafalan, yang kemudian dievaluasi melalui kompetisi Spelling Bee dan pembuatan Mini Word Book. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa metode ini efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan siswa untuk mengeja, memahami, dan menggunakan kosakata yang dipelajari. Penggunaan media digital yang menarik dan konsisten terbukti mampu menciptakan suasana belajar yang lebih interaktif, menyenangkan, dan bermakna.

Abstract

In multilingual regions of Eastern Indonesia, English Language Teaching (ELT) materials that lack cultural relevance often fail to engage learners or reflect their linguistic realities. Local folklore offers a culturally grounded source for contextualizing ELT materials to enhance student learning and motivation. This study explores how local folklore can be integrated into ELT materials and investigates students’ multilingual practices and perceptions within a folklore-based classroom. A qualitative case study was conducted with one English teacher and thirty-two students in a multilingual secondary school. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, and analyzed thematically. Findings show that folklore-based ELT materials enhance engagement, support comprehension through culturally familiar narratives, and promote active participation. Students naturally employed translanguaging strategies to negotiate meaning and strengthen English learning. The integration of folklore also reinforced cultural identity and pride among learners. Overall, contextualizing ELT materials through local folklore proved highly effective in multilingual classrooms, fostering inclusivity, meaningful learning, and cultural awareness. These results highlight the importance of incorporating local narratives into ELT curricula to promote culturally sustaining pedagogy in linguistically diverse settings.

Abstract

Writing fluency is an important aspect of English learning, yet many EFL students struggle to produce continuous and coherent texts because of anxiety, limited vocabulary, and a strong focus on accuracy. This study aims to examine whether free writing activities can improve students’ writing fluency. A quasi-experimental design was used with two groups: an experimental group that received free writing treatment and a control group taught through conventional writing methods. Writing fluency was measured through pre- and post-tests focusing on speed, flow of ideas, and coherence. Data were analyzed using paired-sample and independent-sample t-tests. The results show that the experimental group made significant gains in writing fluency, producing longer and more connected texts, while the control group showed only slight improvement. These findings indicate that free writing is an effective strategy for reducing anxiety and encouraging continuous idea expression. Overall, the study highlights the value of fluency-oriented activities in strengthening students’ writing competence.
