Abstract

ABSTRACT The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines obesity and overweight as a medical condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat. While body mass index (BMI) is commonly used to measure obesity, it has limitations in accounting for differences in body fat distribution. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio on the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease. Various search methods, including indexed sources from Google Scholar, were used to access a diverse range of literature published in the last ten years. The review employed deductive and inductive reasoning to compile and extract relevant information. Deductive reasoning was used to establish a theoretical framework and identify concepts related to waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Inductive reasoning was then applied to analyse the literature and draw conclusions based on the accumulated evidence. The study found that waist-to-hip ratio is a valuable indicator of cardiovascular disease risk in people of all ages, regardless of their body mass index. It is particularly useful when other metabolic risk factors such as diabetes, lipoprotein abnormalities, smoking, and hypertension are present. This approach is especially beneficial for identifying patients who may be at risk of cardiovascular disease despite having a normal BMI. Waist-to-hip ratio provides additional insights into central adiposity, which has been linked to various metabolic abnormalities and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Keywords: Obesity, Waist-to-Hip Ratio, Body Mass Index, Central Adiposity, Cardiovascular Risk

Abstract

ABSTRACT Fecal incontinence is describes as inability to control bowel movement that effect 10-17% elderly. Fecal incontinence increase the risk of infection, psychosocial stress, depression, and increase dependency on others, leading to decrease in quality of life. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the correlation of FISI values with ADL in the elderly, at the Santa Anna nursing resident from June-July 2023. Participants who include in the study will be asked to complete both the FISI and ADL questionnaires. The Spearman correlation test was used In this study. This research include 60 participants with an average age of 76.30 years, dominated by women 40 (66.7%). The results indicate a moderate correlation (-0.432) between FISI scores and ADL scores (p-value=0.001). These findings suggest that increasing severity of fecal incontinence is associated with a decrease in independence. Fecal incontinence impacts the independence of elderly patients. This serves as a reminder for caregivers and families to offer both physical and psychological support to patients suffering from fecal incontinence. Abstract

Elderly individuals often experience physiological and health-related changes, including reduced muscle quality and decreased levels of physical activity. This decline negatively impacts overall health, increases the risk of chronic diseases, and diminishes the ability to perform daily activities. This study aimed to examine the relationship between vitamin D levels and physical activity in older adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Bina Bhakti Nursing Home involving 93 participants aged 60 years and above. Physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), while vitamin D levels were measured through venous blood sampling. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation. The average age of the participants was 74.34 years, with a mean vitamin D level of 23.73 ng/mL. Based on IPAQ results, 26.9% of participants had low physical activity, 44.1% moderate, and 29% high. Spearman correlation revealed a weak but statistically significant positive correlation between vitamin D levels and physical activity (r = 0.240, p = 0.021). These findings suggest that higher physical activity levels are associated with higher vitamin D concentrations. Engaging in outdoor activities that promote sun exposure and an active lifestyle contributes to maintaining adequate vitamin D levels, which are essential for muscle function, balance, and bone health. Therefore, ensuring sufficient vitamin D status is crucial for supporting optimal physical activity and enhancing the overall health and quality of life among the elderly.

Abstract

Muscle strength is the ability of muscles to produce power for physical activity, important for mobility, balance and body function. Decreased muscle strength, especially due to aging, negatively impacts quality of life and increases the risk of diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Handgrip is a simple method for measuring muscle strength, especially hand grip strength. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between hand grip strength and blood insulin levels in the elderly. This study used a cross-sectional design at the Bina Bhakti Nursing Home with 93 participants aged 60 years and over. Hand grip strength was measured using a dynamometer, and blood insulin levels were measured from venous blood samples. Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation. The results showed an average right hand grip strength of 10.23 kg and left hand 9.33 kg, with an average blood insulin level of 4.83 µU/mL. A significant positive correlation was found between right and left hand grip strength (rho = 0.884, p < 0.001), as well as between right (rho = 0.218, p = 0.036) and left hand grip strength (rho = 0.290, p = 0.005) and insulin levels. blood. These results indicate that hand grip strength can be an indicator of metabolic health in the elderly. Interventions such as strength training and proper nutrition are important for maintaining muscle strength and metabolic health in the elderly.

Abstract

Neurocognitive disorders, particularly dementia, affect various cognitive functions such as memory, attention, language, learning, and problem-solving, with the elderly population being the most impacted. The prevalence of dementia is projected to rise to 131 million cases by 2050, posing significant social and economic implications. This study employed a cross-sectional method to evaluate the role of Apolipoprotein A (APOA) and Apolipoprotein B (APOB) in the diagnosis and prevention of dementia in older adults. The results showed that Apolipoprotein A was not significantly correlated with MMSE scores, indicating no clear relationship between APOA and cognitive function. In contrast, Apolipoprotein B demonstrated a significant negative correlation with MMSE, suggesting that increased APOB levels are associated with cognitive decline. Elevated ApoB, linked to increased LDL and oxidative stress, correlated with reduced cognitive function, whereas ApoA, the main component of HDL, is associated with neuroprotective effects. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring lipid profiles, including ApoA and ApoB, in the prevention and management of dementia in the elderly.

Abstract

Abstract

Obesity is a condition that occurs when the body has too much fat and is not balanced with the amount of muscle it has. Obesity is an increasing health problem and has a major impact on mortality and morbidity. Anthropometrics has an important role in screening a person's health status, one of which is obesity, so that by carrying out anthropometric screening, it is hoped that prevention and management of a person's health status can be correlated with obesity. This community service activity is carried out using the PDCA method which focuses on anthropometric screening and health education. Anthropometric screening measures parameters such as body weight, height, waist circumference, and hip circumference, which are important indicators for evaluating the risk of developing obesity. Therefore, anthropometry plays an important role in identifying risks and enabling the rapid and effective implementation of early interventions. Education regarding the importance of physical activity and healthy eating habits is included in this activity, so it is hoped that it can become a basis for maintaining and improving the quality of life and long-term health for the community.
