Abstract

The bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes is a gram-positive bacterium that causes various diseases in humans. Pharyngitis is the most common infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, occurring in 15-30% of children and 5-10% of adults. The extract of mangrove bark contains bioactive compounds that can serve as an antibacterial alternative.  This research is an experimental study. The mangrove bark was extracted using 96% ethanol solvent through the maceration method and subjected to phytochemical testing. The treatment consists of 96% ethanol extract preparations with concentrations of 25%; 50%; 70%; 90%; and 100%, as well as a negative control using aquades and a positive control using amoxicillin. Each treatment was repeated 4 times. Antibacterial activity testing was conducted using the well method on Muller Hinton Agar. The results of the phytochemical test showed that the 96% ethanol extract positively contained flavonoid, phenol, alkaloid, tannin, saponin, steroid, and triterpenoid compounds. The results of the antibacterial activity study from 25%, 50%, 70%, 90%, and 100% concentrations of 96% ethanol extract produced zone diameters of 4.33 mm; 5.68 mm; 6.61 mm; 7.72 mm; and 9.02 mm. These results indicate that the 96% ethanol extract of the mangrove bark has an inhibitory effect on the growth of Streptococcus pyogenes. Data analysis of the 96% ethanol extract of the mangrove bark using the One-Way ANOVA test showed p< 0.05.

Abstract

Obesity contributes for about 2.8 deaths each year and has an effect on increasing blood pressure. The prevalence of obesity in Indonesia in 2018 in adults was 21.8% and is predicted to continue to increase every year. Zumba exercise is an aerobic exercise that is proven to be effective in reducing body fat percentage by burning calories from body fat stores and effective in lowering blood pressure. Seeing the great benefits of Zumba gymnastics but the still limited research on the influence of Zumba gymnastics on the anthropometric profile and Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) in obese individuals, researchers are interested in conducting research on the influence of Zumba gymnastics intervention on the anthropometric profile and MAP in students at the University of Lampung who are obese. This research is a quasi experimental design with a non-randomized control group pretest-posttest approach. The samples used is 26 samples for each zumba group with zumba fitness exercise treatment and the control group without zumba exercise treatment, which were taken by purposive sampling technique. The analysis is using a paired t-test parametric test and non-parametric wilcoxon test. The results showed that zumba exercise had a significant effect on the anthropometric profile Body Mass Index (BMI) with p-value = 0.000, abdominal circumference with p-value = 0.000, and MAP with p-value = 0.000. Based on the statistical results, there is a significant effect of zumba exercise on BMI, abdominal circumference, and MAP in obese students of Lampung University.

Abstract

Cerebral cortex has a motoric area which function in controlling muscle movement. When this area does not develop properly or damaged, cerebral palsy can occur. Cerebral palsy is a disorder of the motoric area of the brain which causes a dysfunction on muscle activities. Eventually, this will lead to limitation of daily activities. Disorder can occur in prenatal, perinatal, or postnatal period. There are four types of cerebral palsy which are spastic, dyskinetic, ataxic, and mixed cerebral palsy. Patient with cerebral palsy experience changes in production of force, balance, and gait as well as a decreased in production of volunteer force. The most dominant sign is balance disorder, but sensoric deficiency could also be seen. In diagnosing cerebral palsy, Levine criteria called POSTER can be used. A child is said to have cerebral palsy when four out of six categories are fulfilled. The aim of treatment of cerebral palsy is to increase functionality, improve capability, and sustain health. Treatment should be done as early as possible and intensive to achieve maximum output. Aside from pharmacological and surgical treatment, mechanic aids, and management of associated medical condition, treatment of cerebral palsy includes physiotherapy. Physiotherapy helps to improve gross motor quality in children with cerebral palsy. Although there are no medicines that can cure cerebral palsy, physiotherapy approach can be done includes re-patterning movement, neurodevelopmental technique (NDT), body weight support treadmill training, atlanto-occipitalisi mobilisation, and standing frame exercise.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia due to problems with insulin performance, with prevalence continuing to increase throughout the world. According to Bodke et al (2023), in the last three decades, the number of diabetes sufferers is estimated to reach 642 million in 2040, with the majority being in low and middle income countries. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common form, caused by insulin resistance and insufficient insulin secretion so that the sugar that enters the body is difficult to process. Management of diabetes mellitus requires a comprehensive approach that includes diabetes patient education, lifestyle changes, a balanced diet, and physical activity. Patient education is essential to increase their understanding of the disease and how to manage their health condition. Lifestyle changes and a balanced diet can help regulate blood glucose levels, while physical activity plays a role in improving insulin sensitivity. Antidiabetic drugs consist of oral and injectable preparations. The combination of pharmacological therapy with oral antidiabetic drugs such as metformin and SGLT2 inhibitors has also proven effective in lowering blood glucose levels and reducing the risk of complications. This approach is expected to improve the quality of life of diabetes mellitus patients and reduce the burden of disease in society. This literature review aims to explore the importance of rationality in administering antidiabetic drugs to type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in Indonesia.

Abstract

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is a sudden pain in the facial area, short duration for about one second to two minutes, being-stabbed feels like, and occurs repeatedly in one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. Type 1 (one) as intermittent pain and type 2 (two) as constant pain with different clinical, pathological, and prognostic complaints. The causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia involve peripheral pathology in the roots (compression or traction), brainstem dysfunction, basal ganglia, and cortical pain modulation mechanisms, but the most common is due to neurovascular factors. The diagnosis of Trigeminal Neuralgia is basically clinical, to rule out secondary causes, detect pathological changes in the affected roots and neurovascular compression (NPC), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may be used. The choice of first-line drug therapy is carbamazepine, and for the second line patient may use oxcarbazepine, baclofen, lamotrigine, phenytoin, and topiramate. Microvascular decompression (MVD) is the surgical treatment of choice for TN that is resistant to medical management. Patients with significant medical comorbidities, without neurovascular compression and multiple sclerosis are generally advised to undergo gamma knife radiosurgery, percutaneous balloon compression, glycerol rhizotomy, and radiofrequency thermocoagulation procedures. The most effective medical therapy is with carbamazepine with a reported reduction in facial pain after taking it as much as 47 percent. For patients who do not respond to medical treatment, microvascular decompression surgery is performed with an effectiveness rate in patients as much as 90 percent.

Abstract

Over the last decade, research on artificial intelligence (AI) in the medical field has increased. However, unlike other disciplines, AI in personality disorders is still in the minority. For this reason, we conduct a map research using bibliometric and build a visualization map using VOSviewer in AI to predict personality disorders. We conducted a literature review using the systematic literature review (SLR) method, consisting of three stages: planning, implementation, and reporting. The evaluation involved 22 scientific articles on AI in predicting personality disorders indexed by Scopus Quartile Q1–Q4 from the Google Scholar database during the last five years, from 2018–2023. In the meantime, the results of bibliometric analysis have led to the discovery of information about the most productive publishers, the evolution of scientific articles, and the quantity of citations. In addition, VOSviewer’s visualization of the most frequently occurring terms in abstracts and titles has made it easier for researchers to find novel and infrequently studied subjects in AI on personality disorders.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the relationship between age, gender, education level, employment status, and comorbidities with nutritional status in hemodialysis patients. It employed a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of end-stage renal disease outpatients undergoing hemodialysis, totaling 84 respondents aged 19‒59 years. The sampling method utilized was simple random sampling. This research was conducted from October to November 2024. Nutritional status was measured using the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) questionnaire. Statistical tests employed included chi-square and logistic regression analyses. The statistical results indicated a significant relationship between employment status and nutritional status, comorbidity and nutritional status in hemodialysis patients (p<0.05). No significant relationships were found between age, gender, and education level with nutritional status among hemodialysis patients (p>0.05). The factors associated with nutritional status among hemodialysis patients are comorbidity (OR=6.618; 95% CI:2.124–20.619, p<0.05) and employment status (OR=5.887; 95% CI:1.585–21.870, p<0.05). Malnutrition is closely related to the presence of comorbidities in hemodialysis patients; therefore, it is crucial to treat and manage comorbidities to prevent the progression of malnutrition in this population. Health workers in the hemodialysis department should pay more attention to the nutritional status of patients who are unemployed.

Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: The prognosis of neonatal sepsis critically depends on early detection; however, its nonspecific clinical signs and variable laboratory findings often complicate the timely diagnosis. This study aimed to assess the correlation between clinical manifestations and laboratory results in neonatal sepsis cases, focusing on patients at Abdul Moeloek Hospital. Methodology/approach: A cross-sectional approach was used to analyze the medical records of neonates diagnosed with sepsis between January and June 2024. All neonates admitted to the neonatal unit with suspected sepsis during this period were included in the study. Results/findings: The majority of patients were male (65.1%) and 1 week old (58.7%). Hyperthermia (44.4%) was the most common symptom, followed by a normal heart rate (68.3%) and respiratory rate (81%). Most patients had normal hemoglobin (55.6%) and leukocyte levels (71.4%), low platelet counts (50.8%), and negative culture results (74.6%). Statistically significant correlations were found between heart rate (OR=0.4) and respiratory rate (OR=0.3) and laboratory findings (p<0.05), although the strength was weak to moderate. No significant correlation was observed with body temperature (p=0.412). Conclusions: Heart and respiratory rates were significantly associated with sepsis-related laboratory results, whereas body temperature was not. Most affected neonates were male, one week old, and presented with hyperthermia but otherwise normal vital signs and blood cell counts. Limitations: The limited sample size and study duration suggest the need for further research. Contribution: These findings provide insights into improving the early detection and management of neonatal sepsis, particularly in pediatric care settings in Indonesia.
