Abstract

Metacognition refers to the capacity to comprehend and regulate one's own cognitive processes. By cultivating students' metacognitive skills in physics education, they will acquire the ability to understand and govern their own thinking. This, in turn, will enhance the effectiveness of physics instruction by fostering student engagement and enabling them to rectify their own errors. However, previous studies have revealed a scarcity of physics teachers who integrate metacognitive training into their teaching practices. Thus, the aim of this research is to investigate the extent to which high school physics teachers in the Riau Islands Province engage in metacognitive training for their students. Employing a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, data was collected through interviews conducted with physics teachers from local high schools. This study's participants are physics teachers in the Kepulauan Riau Province. There are a total of 25 physics teachers participating in the study. The sampling technique employed in this research is purposive sampling. During these interviews, the researchers posed open-ended questions to elicit insights into physics teachers' experiences with the cultivation of metacognitive skills in their students during physics lessons. According to the study's findings, physics teachers in the Riau Islands Province are indeed training their students in indicators of metacognitive abilities. However, we observed that some teachers remain unaware that the exercises they assign inherently serve as indicators of metacognitive skills. This lack of awareness is attributed to a deficient understanding among teachers regarding the nature of metacognition.

Abstract

This study is a survey research with a cross sectional survey design, which aims to describe the ability of junior high school mathematics teachers in writing HOTS items. The population of this study was junior high school mathematics teachers in Sleman Regency, while the sample was 21 teachers determined by non-stratified random sampling. The sample teachers came from 11 schools totaling 21 teachers.  Each teacher created three HOTS items along with their grids. The question items made by the sample teachers were descriptive questions. The question items that had been prepared were then reviewed by two mathematics teachers from leading junior high schools in Yogyakarta. The next stage after validation is the trial. The number of respondents used was 263 students for testing teacher-made questions, namely 127 students in class VIII and 136 students in class VII. The results showed that the quality of the questions produced by the teacher based on the reliability estimation results obtained an estimate of 0.635 for class VII and 0.416 for class VIII. Likewise, the resulting differentiating power is less than 50% of the questions made by teachers who have differentiating power in the good, good, and very good categories. Factors that cause this include the lack of experience of teachers in writing HOTS questions. This is a special note to familiarize teachers with using HOTS questions in daily tests, UTS, and UAS proportionally so that the experience and ability of teachers to write HOTS questions increases.

Abstract

Assessing the quality of learning in higher education is one of the efforts to ensure its standards. Typically, the assessment of the quality of learning implementation involves observation by multiple raters. This study aims to provide construct validity evidence and estimate the reliability of performance assessment instruments for educators in higher education. 225 second-year and third-year students from the Faculty of Education participated as raters, evaluating the performance of educators in their teaching practices. Forty assessment items were used to evaluate the performance of 19 instructors. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Generalizability Theory (G-Theory) were employed to examine the quality of the performance assessment instruments. The EFA analysis resulted in the identification of five factors that contribute to educators' performance in teaching: (1) readiness and planning, (2) pedagogy and professionalism, (3) personality, (4) social relationships within the classroom, and (5) social relationships beyond the classroom, collectively explaining 67.671% of the variance. Of the 40 assessment items, 37 demonstrated construct validity, while three required revisions. These findings indicate the alignment between the instrument's factors and the formulated theory of teaching competence. The reliability of the measurements was estimated using G-Theory in RStudio, yielding a relative G coefficient of 0.88 for three raters. The D-Study results indicated that the instrument could be used to assess performance, with an estimated generalizability coefficient of 0.738, requiring a minimum of five raters for each person (educator) being evaluated. We recommend employing G-Study and D-Study to determine the number of raters involved in performance assessment as a means of cost and time efficiency in the evaluation process.

Abstract

[English]: This study aims to review several previous studies concerning the assessment of critical thinking skills in mathematics learning. This study used the method known as Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), consisting of four stages: identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion. SCOPUS database was used as the main source in the document selection since it is considered one of the most accurate international indexing systems. The detailed document selection was carried out in the following order: (1) the identification was performed by restricting the SCOPUS database search on the context of critical thinking assessment in mathematics learning and resulted in 147 documents; (2) the first screening based on a restriction of year range (the last 10 years: from 2013 to 2023) resulted in 121 documents and the second screening based on the types of documents (journal articles and conference papers) resulted in 102 documents; (3) in the eligibility stage, 19 documents were found to be relevant to the subject area of mathematics learning; and (4) in the inclusion stage, 11 documents were selected manually based on the keywords and citation and used as the review materials in this study. The existing studies reveal the importance of critical thinking in mathematics learning and present various approaches and instruments that can be adopted to assess the critical thinking skills in the context of mathematics learning. However, the facts about the peculiarities of critical thinking are still unresolved due to the abundance of theories according to different perspectives, thus causing the emergence of various measurement standards on critical thinking skills in mathematics learning. Therefore, the definition of critical thinking in a more specific context, such as mathematics learning, needs to be established, and the instruments used to assess the critical thinking skills in this specific context need to be developed.
