Abstract

This article will discuss the strategies used by the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) in responding to the crisis of public trust in the Bantimurung District. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection techniques involve in-depth interviews, field observations, and the study of relevant documents regarding Bawaslu's work program. Research informants consist of the Chairperson and members of Bawaslu, community leaders, political party officials, and the general public. The research findings indicate that Bawaslu's main strategies include increasing information transparency through mass media broadcasts and periodic meetings with stakeholders; optimizing the supervision functions to prevent money politics and campaign violations at the sub-district/village level; improving public complaint services; and massive socialization of Bawaslu's roles and functions to schools, community organizations, and the general public. However, the implementation of these strategies is still not fully effective due to obstacles such as human resources, budget constraints, inter-agency coordination, and lack of regulatory support. The conclusion of this research is that strong commitment and collaboration are needed from various stakeholders, including local governments and regional representative councils (DPRD), to support efforts to restore public trust in Bawaslu in the Bantimurung District.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of street children's lives in Makassar City through an anthropological approach, highlighting how social and cultural structures influence their identity and behavior. Street children are not only understood as victims of poverty, but they are a social group with their own unique value systems, norms, and internal structures. They form an informal community that demonstrates solidarity, social cohesion, and their own way of life. This study adopts Anthony Giddens' theory of “structuration” and James C. Scott's theory of “resistance” to explain the position of street children as active agents whose daily lives are not only shaped by social structures but also reflexively reproduce and transform these structures through their actions and the power they hold against state dominance, such as symbolic actions and the use of urban space as a arena for negotiating their identities.

Abstract

The Pattaungeng tradition is one of the cultural heritages of the Bugis people in Soppeng Regency, which is held annually as a form of gratitude for the harvest and respect for ancestors. This research aims to examine the role of the Pattaungeng tradition in strengthening social cohesion within the community. The method used is descriptive qualitative research with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The research informants include traditional figures, village government officials, and community members who actively participate in the tradition. The research findings indicate that the Pattaungeng tradition plays a significant role in strengthening social cohesion thru five main dimensions: (1) preserving cultural identity as a collective symbol of Bugis society, (2) intergenerational integration thru the transfer of values and norms, (3) the practice of collective deliberation (tudang sipulung) as a means of building consensus, (4) symbolic relationships with religion that provide spiritual legitimacy for cultural practices, and (5) strengthening socio-economic networks thru community cooperation and mutual contribution. This finding confirms that Pattaungeng is not merely a cultural ritual, but also a social mechanism that maintains solidarity, prevents individualism, and strengthens community bonds amidst the currents of modernization.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of child marriage in Sinjai Regency through the perspective of George Homans' exchange theory. This theory is used to understand how individuals and families make marriage decisions based on considerations of value and cost. The method employed in this research is a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews and participatory observation techniques, involving informants who are couples married under the age of 19, as well as their parents from various social and economic backgrounds. The results indicate that child marriage in Sinjai Regency is caused by three main factors: economic reasons, arranged marriages, and premarital pregnancies. The economic factor serves as the primary driver, where families view marriage as a solution to financial difficulties and a means to enhance social status. Arranged marriages, often influenced by cultural norms, also contribute to the decision to marry. Additionally, premarital pregnancies create social pressure that encourages individuals to marry as a form of responsibility. These findings reflect the fundamental principles of Homans' exchange theory, where individuals strive to maximize benefits and minimize losses in social interactions. Therefore, it is essential for the government and society to raise awareness of the negative impacts of child marriage and provide better alternatives, such as education and economic empowerment programs, to reduce the incidence of child marriage in Sinjai Regency.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how social support and social relationships are perceived and experienced by university students who consume alcoholic beverages on campus, and how these factors relate to expressions of aggressiveness. The research is motivated by the growing concern over aggressive behaviors among students involved in alcohol consumption, as well as the limited number of studies that address this issue from a social and cultural perspective. Previous research has predominantly employed quantitative approaches or focused on individual psychological factors. To address this gap, the present study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach with an interpretivist orientation, aiming to uncover the meanings and lived experiences of students. Eight active students from the Gunungsari campus of Universitas Negeri Makassar were selected as participants using purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that forms of social support emotional, informational, and instrumental as well as social relationships characterized by cooperation, accommodation, and assimilation, shape how students interpret and respond to situations involving alcohol use and aggression. These results suggest that aggressive behavior is not solely an individual response but is deeply embedded in the surrounding social context. This study contributes to the literature on student behavior and mental health from a socio-cultural perspective, particularly within the context of higher education in Indonesia.
