Abstract

Toxigenic Aspergillus flavus is a primary producer of aflatoxin in Indonesia, and its presence can lead to the contamination of agricultural commodities. This contamination poses a risk to export-targeted commodities, potentially resulting in their rejection. Therefore, this study aims to characterize the molecular profile of native A. flavus isolated from several Indonesian agricultural products, with a major focus on its toxigenicity and toxin production. A total of 18 A. flavus collections were isolated from nutmeg, ground peanut, cacao, coffee bean, corn, white pepper, and soil peanut plantation. Species identification was carried out using molecular and morphological approaches. The toxigenicity of isolates was characterized based on the amplification of aflatoxin gene clusters, while toxin production was assessed through growth simulation on a 10% coconut broth media followed by HPLC quantification. The result showed that all isolates were confirmed as A. flavus based on the morphological and sequence analysis of the ITS region. A total of 11 isolates (61%) were confirmed as toxigenic and produced 1-2 types of aflatoxin, in varying concentrations of high, moderate, or low levels of AFB1. High levels of AFB1 produced by seven isolates namely BIO3313, BIO33212, BIO3361, BIO33404, BIO3338, BIO3352, and BIO3344, had concentration levels ranging from 76.78 to 2241.06 µg/kg, while three isolates (BIO3314, BIO3312, and BIO3381) produced AFB1 below 1 µg/kg. Twenty-nine pairs of aflatoxin gene-specific sequences were successfully amplified as a single band, while some produced non-specific patterns in several low toxigenic and non-toxigenic isolates. Based on the results, it was concluded that completed gene clusters and variations of gene deletion were observed in both toxigenic and non-toxigenic isolates. However, no specific target gene could effectively distinguish the two groups. Two non-toxigenic isolates namely BIO3393 and BIO33403 exhibited a large deletion and could be potential candidates for biocontrol agents.

Abstract

: Communication competence is an essential ability that children must develop in order to express their thoughts and communicate effectively. Communication serves as a medium for expressing emotions, developing social relationships, and projecting personal identity. However, not all children are able to develop social communication skills independently and at a rapid pace. Some children with special needs require assistance in developing their social communication abilities due to their specific conditions. Deaf students, in particular, often experience communication difficulties, which highlights the need for appropriate strategies to enhance their social communication skills. One strategy that can be applied to improve the social communication abilities of students with special needs is peer-based play. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design aimed at providing an in-depth description of the communication conditions of a student with profound hearing impairment. The findings indicate that students’ communication and social skills improved after the implementation of game-based learning strategies. This study provides empirical support for teachers to implement peer play-based game strategies in instructional practices to support the development of social communication skills among deaf students.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study investigates how elementary school principals in urban and rural settings develop future-ready leadership through integrating behavioral and managerial design change dimensions within an edification-based framework to address digital transformation challenges in Indonesian elementary education. Methodology: A mixed exploratory qualitative design with component analysis was employed, using structured observations and interviews with contrasting questions. Ten elementary school principals from Bandung City and West Bandung Regency were selected via purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using ATLAS.ti software through systematic thematic coding of non-numerical textual data. Main Findings: Urban schools in Bandung City demonstrated higher digital adaptability, innovative supervision, and active professional development supported by adequate infrastructure and collaborative culture. Rural schools in West Bandung Regency exhibited conventional leadership patterns constrained by limited technology access. Two integrated leadership stages emerged: Behavior Design Change (digital leadership, open-mindedness, efficacy, foresight) and Managerial Design Change (network, digital organization, transition management, digital transformation, innovation strategy). Novelty/Originality of this study: This study introduces an edification-based leadership development framework integrating behavioral and managerial design change dimensions specifically for elementary school principals. It advances existing knowledge by providing empirical evidence of urban–rural digital leadership disparities in Indonesia and offering a contextualized, culturally-responsive model for developing future-ready school leaders.

Abstract

The advancement of modern education requires the implementation of innovative, creative, and adaptive learning systems through the use of graphic-based instructional media in curriculum development. Conventional teaching methods often lead to low student participation, learning boredom, and difficulties in understanding abstract concepts due to limited visual support. This study aims to analyze the influence of graphic-based learning media on curriculum development, learning motivation, and students’ creativity. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through literature review, observation, and analysis of educational sources related to visual media and modern curriculum development. The findings indicate that graphic media, including images, diagrams, illustrations, and infographics, contribute to improving conceptual understanding, learning concentration, critical thinking skills, and interactive learning communication. The integration of graphic media also supports student-centered learning practices. However, its effectiveness is constrained by technological limitations, teachers’ competencies in designing visual media, and differences in students’ learning characteristics.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The presence of alien plant species in High Conservation Value (HCV) areas of oil palm plantations has dual implications, posing potential threats to biodiversity while also providing ecological and economic benefits. This study aimed to inventory alien plant species occurring in HCV areas in Riau Province and identify their potential uses. The study was conducted through a reanalysis of primary vegetation inventory data collected from three HCV areas within oil palm plantations in Riau Province using a single-plot sampling method. Alien plant species were identified by referring to the Regulation of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry No. P.94/2016, the Global Invasive Species Database, and A Guide Book to Invasive Plant Species in Indonesia. Information on their ecological functions and economic values was obtained through a literature review. The results identified 14 alien plant species belonging to nine families, with Asteraceae being the most dominant family (36%). Non-forest riparian HCV areas contained the highest proportion of alien plant species (34,4%), whereas no alien species were recorded in sialang forest patches. Ten species (76,9%) were found to provide important ecological functions, including ground cover, erosion control, soil fertility enhancement, forage for livestock and wildlife, and sources of botanical pesticides. All identified species also exhibited economic potential, particularly as medicinal plants, food resources, livestock forage, botanical pesticides, and timber resources. These findings suggest that the management of alien plant species in HCV areas should adopt a risk-based adaptive approach that considers the invasiveness, ecological functions, and economic value of each species.   Keywords: alien plants, biodiversity, high conservation value, invasive plants, oil palm plantations   ABSTRAK Keberadaan tumbuhan asing pada areal Nilai Konservasi Tinggi (NKT) perkebunan kelapa sawit memiliki implikasi ganda, yaitu berpotensi mengancam keanekaragaman hayati sekaligus memberikan manfaat ekologis dan ekonomi.
