Abstract

Background: The agricultural sector in Indonesia, contributing 13.7% to GDP and employing 30% of the workforce, is critical to the nation's economy. Despite its importance, the country's participation in the agricultural global value chain (GVC) faces persistent challenges, particularly in advancing agro-processing and integrating into high-value production. Purpose: This study analyzes Indonesia's GVC position and participation from 2007 to 2021, using the UIBE GVC Index and ADB ICIO data.Design/Methodology/Approach: Descriptive statistics and linear regression methods are used to assess Indonesia's forward and backward GVC participation compared to that of 62 other countries worldwide.Findings/Result: Findings reveal significant declines in Indonesia's backward participation, reflecting progress toward self-sufficiency, yet limited participation in complex forward and backward linkages underscores deficiencies in technological infrastructure and value-added exports. Moderate engagement in simple forward linkages highlights the need for targeted investments to boost competitiveness. Strategic interventions in infrastructure, advanced inputs, capacity-building, and global collaborations are essential for strengthening Indonesia's agricultural GVC role. Conclusion: To enhance GVC participation, Indonesia must address technological, infrastructure, and policy gaps. Strategic investments in agro-processing, advanced inputs, supply chain modernization, and international partnerships are critical to boosting competitiveness and export performance. Originality/Value (State of the Art): This study provides comprehensive insights for policymakers and stakeholders, emphasizing innovative strategies to enhance Indonesia’s global agricultural presence and achieve sustainable growth. Keywords: Agriculture, GVC Position, GVC Participation, Global Value Chain (GVC), UIBE GVC Index.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the main exporters of coffee commodities. Indonesia's coffee production is mostly exported abroad and the rest is to meet domestic needs. Indonesia's coffee exports cover five continents, namely Asia, Africa, Australia, the Americas, and Europe, with the main market share in Europe. This study aims to (1) analyze the market share of Indonesian coffee bean exports in the international market, and (2) analyze the market position of Indonesian coffee bean exports in the international market using the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) approach. This study uses secondary data in the form of monthly time series for 12 years from 2010 to 2021 with HS code 0901111 (coffee, not roasted, not decaffeinated). The results show Indonesia's coffee bean export market share is third after Brazil and Colombia. Indonesia's price elasticity (uncompensa/1ted) is inelastic and has a negative relationship. The cross-price elasticity (compensated) between Indonesia and Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Ethiopia, and Uganda is negative and indicates a complementary and inelastic relationship. The expenditure elasticity of Indonesian coffee exports is negative, indicating that Indonesian coffee is included in inferior goods and is inelastic.

Abstract

Value chain governance within hydroponic systems plays a critical role in optimizing every stage, from product design to marketing. This study aims to analyze the governance structure established in the value chain of hydroponic leaf vegetables. Primary data were collected through structured interviews using questionnaires and field observations. The sampling method employed was snowball sampling, involving a total of 9 farmers, 2 collectors, and 1 retailer as respondents. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively using a descriptive approach, referring to the value chain analysis framework proposed by Kaplinsky. The findings reveal that the type of governance in the hydroponic leaf vegetable value chain in Bogor Regency is categorized as modular governance. This governance type reflects a high degree of independence among actors within the value chain, coupled with strong coordination and adherence to established standards. These results provide insights into the efficiency and adaptability of modular governance in supporting sustainable and technologically driven agricultural practices.

Abstract

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become a significant global trade hub. Understanding the factors influencing trade flows is crucial for developing effective strategies to promote trade activities and sustain economic growth. This study examines the impact of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and population size on trade flows in UAE with major trading partners, including China, Germany, Iraq, India, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, by utilizing a fixed-effects gravity model and panel data from 2000 to 2020. A positive relationship was found between the GDP of UAE and trading partners and bilateral trade, and a negative relationship was found between GDP per capita, the population of UAE, and bilateral trade flows. The distance between the capital city of UAE and its trading partners also has a negative effect on bilateral trade flows. This study suggests that trading partners should improve their GDP per capita. The negative impact of the increasing population size of the UAE on bilateral trade flows indicates that the UAE should improve labor quality and skills that may enhance trade growth and economic development and that trade policies between UAE and its trading partners need to address trade barriers and initiate efforts for their eradication to improve bilateral trade. The policy implication is that trade opportunities should be expanded by exploring trade agreements and fostering diversification of export goods to mitigate domestic competition and open new markets.

Abstract

Efforts to overcome the dependence on garlic imports in Indonesia by raising its production have not yet been achieved. Various challenges have emerged, threatening the sustainability of garlic production and escalating the annual volume of imports. It is imperative to evaluate the initiatives undertaken to ensure the sustainability of garlic production. To address the issue, this study assessed the sustainability of garlic production and identified the leverage factors affecting it. This study employed the Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) method by examining indicators across five dimensions. Sustainability scores were derived through expert judgment via interviews and Focus Group Discussions with 74 participants. This research discovered moderate sustainability levels, with the economic dimension exhibiting the lowest index. Consequently, garlic farming faced considerable challenges and obstacles stemming from economic factors, potentially disrupting the sustainability of its production. Based on the identified leverage variables, this study recommends five specific interventions to improve garlic production sustainability: constructing water reservoirs and developing irrigation infrastructure, implement a minimum purchasing price and restricting import quotas during peak harvest, enhancing the selling value of local garlic by promoting its superiority, making significant efforts to develop research aimed at producing high-quality seeds in mass quantities, and establishing a robust marketing institution at the farmer level.
