Abstract

The quality of learning in the classroom is inseparable from the ability of a teacher to implement his knowledge in the learning process. Various strategies, methods, and approaches have been carried out to improve the quality of learning. One of the efforts made by the government is to change the learning approach that was originally teacher-centered to student-centered, the approach in question is scientific. This study tries to explore the implementation of lesson study using a scientific approach to improve the quality of mathematics learning in elementary schools. This research was conducted in an elementary school in Purwakarta. Based on the results of the study it was found that lesson study is an effective way to improve the quality of mathematics learning in elementary schools. the use of a scientific approach also has an impact on learning activities with five stages of scientific thinking, namely observing, asking, trying, reasoning, and communicating to stimulate students to be active and think critically.

Abstract

This research aims at developing local instruction theory for learning combinations by using Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). This research uses a design research approach, Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT), developed from a series of activities to obtain a better understanding about combinations at Senior High School (SHS) students. Theoretical development is supported by an interactive process in designing learning activities, conducting teaching experiment and conducting retrospective analysis to contribute to combinations of Local Instruction Theory (LIT). An understanding of combinations emerges and develops during classroom learning activities. Qualitative analysis of teaching experiments shows that by using local instruction theory teaching materials that characterize RME students are able to develop their understanding about a combination.

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of mathematical teaching that takes place in the classroom to identifying the characteristics of didactical contract that occur as part of a didactical situation. Didactical contract is a way that determines the responsibilities of teachers and students and regulates their interaction in a learning process. Arithmetic operations involving negative numbers are known to have epistemological obstacles that cause student difficulties in solving problems and understand the higher level subject matter. The design experiment was conducted on 31 seventh grade students and a mathematics teacher on negative integer operations lessons. The researchers analyzed the ongoing learning, how the didactic situational stages evolve in the teacher-student interaction that allows the formation of new knowledge or concepts in the student and how the teacher organizes the responsibility for achieving the learning objectives. The Analysis showed that students, at an early stage, can perform negative integers operations by utilizing the basic concepts they get in primary school. This concept can bridge into a new knowledge that identifies the properties of integer count operations and builds power of mind on problem-solving.

Abstract

Kata kunci: Hambatan Didaktik, Hambatan Epistemologi, Hambatan Ontogenik, Learning Obstacle, SantriThis study aims to identify learning obstacles experienced by santri (students) in the mathematics learning process in Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School). Interpretive studies are used to identify learning obtstacles. There are several learning obstacles experienced by santri in the mathematics learning in Pesantren, namely: 1) The ontogenic obstacles experienced by santri come from instrumental ontogenic obstacles and conceptual ontogenic obstacles, so that they affect psychological ontogenic obstacles (motivation and interest); 2) Didactic obstacles occur because the mathematics curriculum used is the same as the mathematics curriculum in SMA or MA so that it affects the presentation and teaching of mathematics by teachers in the classroom because they pursue a lot of material while the lesson hours are limited so they cannot maximize the mathematics learning process and accommodate increased santri abilities related to their needs as a cadre of ulama; 3) Epistemological obstacles occur because the learning process is fixated on SMA or MA textbooks so that the learning context is the same as learning mathematics in SMA or MA and is not linked to the context of Islamic religious knowledge or according to the situation of PesantrenKeywords: Didactic Obstacles, Epistemological Obstacles, Islamic Boarding School, Learning Obstacles, Ontogenic Obstacles

Abstract

This paper reports some results of a research attempted to cultivate students' mathematical reasoning ability (MRA) by means of implementing problem-based learning (PBL) model. The population was upper secondary students of public schools in Bandung. Cluster sampling technique applied to take sample of amount 158 students from middle-level schools. Data were teachers' assessment on students’ performance in last two months, prior mathematical knowledge (PMK) and MRA test, observations, and interview. Two-factors ANOVA then used to analyze the data. Findings showed that overall students in PBL-classroom achieved better MRA than their counterparts in conventional one though the category in both classrooms was low. Interaction between PBL and PMK factor towards MRA did not emerge. Most part of the participants viewed PBL neither positive nor negative. On the contrary, they assessed that the tasks given made and demanded them thinking and learning more actively than ever. The findings showed adopting PBL in schools to facilitate students getting their higher order thinking skills is a reasonable choice, especially schools having middle or high ability students. Keywords: problem-based learning (PBL), mathematical reasoning ability
