Abstract

Geometry is a basic mathematical concept studied at all education levels. However empiricalevidence suggests there are many students who have difficulties learning geometry. One ofmany factors that enhances the success of students’ understanding of geometry is students’ senseof spatial ability. Seeking ways to support students’ development of spatial sense, researchersstudied the impact of Computer-Based Interactive Multimedia Instruction. This study was quasiexperimental in nature with Pretest and Post-test Control Group Design. The participants of thestudy were second grade students of two public junior high schools that were classified as schoolsof high and middle level ranking, in Bandung. The instruments utilized in this study consistedof prior mathematical skills test (KAM) and spatial sense ability test. The results suggested that:(1a) generally the students’ spatial sense ability and learning independency were enhanced usingComputer-Based Interactive Multimedia Instruction, compared with conventional learning;(1b) there were no differences in the enhancement achievements between students’ spatial senseability and conventional learning related to school ranking level; (1c) according to KAM, therewere significant enhancements of student’s spatial sense ability between high, middle, and lowKAM; (2) There is no interaction of effect between learning (CBIM and CVL) and school levelto the enhancement of ability of students’ spatial sense. (3) There is no interaction of effectbetween learning (CBIM and CVL) and KAM to the enhancement of ability of students’ spatialsense.Keywords: geometry, spatial sense, computer-based interactive multimedia, learning difficulties.

Abstract

This paper reports some results of a research attempted to cultivate students' mathematical reasoning ability (MRA) by means of implementing problem-based learning (PBL) model. The population was upper secondary students of public schools in Bandung. Cluster sampling technique applied to take sample of amount 158 students from middle-level schools. Data were teachers' assessment on students’ performance in last two months, prior mathematical knowledge (PMK) and MRA test, observations, and interview. Two-factors ANOVA then used to analyze the data. Findings showed that overall students in PBL-classroom achieved better MRA than their counterparts in conventional one though the category in both classrooms was low. Interaction between PBL and PMK factor towards MRA did not emerge. Most part of the participants viewed PBL neither positive nor negative. On the contrary, they assessed that the tasks given made and demanded them thinking and learning more actively than ever. The findings showed adopting PBL in schools to facilitate students getting their higher order thinking skills is a reasonable choice, especially schools having middle or high ability students.Keywords: problem-based learning (PBL), mathematical reasoning ability

Abstract

The present study aims at examining the use of open-ended approach in cultivating senior high school students' mathematical creative thinking ability (MCTA) and self-esteem (SE) in mathematics viewed from school category. The subjects of this research were the students grade XI at three schools; high, middle and low category in Kota Serang, Banten Province. In every school category, two classes were chosen; one class was the experimental group which was taught by open-ended approach, while another class was a control group which was taught by conventional way. This quasi-experimental research employed MCTA test and SE in mathematics scale as the instruments. In general, the research result shows that the MCTA improvement and SE level of the students who are taught by open-ended approach is better than those who are taught conventionally. The results of students' MCTA and SE viewed from school category will be further discussed.Keywords: mathematical creative thinking ability, self-esteem, open-ended approach

Abstract

The Fraction is a material that is very important for students to learn in elementary school, but various difficulties are shown by students in understanding the material, so this study will analyze the learning obstacle that appears to students in the addition and subtraction material in grade 5 elementary school.  The approach in this research uses qualitative and case study methods. The subjects in this study were 5th-grade students of Geger Kalong Girang 1¾2 elementary schools, Bandung City, West Java, Indonesia with a total of 29 students.  Data was collected by tests, interviews, and documentation, while for data analysis techniques using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions.  The results of this study indicated that students experience learning obstacles, including 1) ontogenic obstacle, which is the inability of students to understand the purpose of the problems presented; 2) epistemological obstacle, namely the inability of students to understand the concept of fractions is part of the whole and the inability of students to do the addition and subtraction of fractions, and; 3) didactical obstacle caused by the presentation of material and the teacher's way of teaching which is only informal.  This research is expected to facilitate students to understand fractions and be a development material in making teaching materials and didactic design of the addition and subtraction fractions based on learning obstacles that appear in this study.

Abstract

Geometry is one of the subject matter taught from elementary to higher education, one of the material taught in geometry in elementary school is circumference and area of plane material. This study aims to analyze of epistemological obstacle of fourth and fifth grade students of SD Negeri Asmi 033 Bandung City in answering circumference and area of plane question. This study used an exploratory study in the form of a written description test on the circumference and area of plane material given to fourth and fifth grade students of SD Negeri Asmi 033 Bandung City. The results of the analysis show that there are still many students who experience learning obstacle related to epistemological. This research is expected to be taken into consideration by teachers in seeing students' learning obstacles to be used as material in making didactic designs on the Material of Circumference and Area of Plane in Grades 4

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to see the effect of mathematical creative thinking skills on student learning outcomes. The research method used is quantitative research. The sample used in this study were fourth grade elementary school students who were selected by purposive sampling technique. While the design used in this study is to use the pretest and posttest One Group Design. The data in this study were obtained from the prestest and postest values which were analyzed statistically by the Paired Sample T-Test. The result of the research means that there is a significant influence between the influence of mathematical creative thinking skills on learning outcomes of elementary school students

Abstract

The ability of mathematical problem-solving is a required ability for students in solving mathematical problems, other academic problems, or even daily life. This research is motivated by a lack of primary school students’ problem-solving ability. The research was conducted to investigate the influence of statistical data board learning media on the mathematical problem-solving ability on data processing material for fourth-grade students in primary school. This research employed a quantitative approach by involving 73 fourth-grade students in one of the primary schools in Sumedang Regency as the research subjects and analyzing the data using a t-test. The research results revealed that the significance value obtained by the students was < 0.05. Therefore, it indicated that statistical data board learning media had an influence on mathematical problem-solving on data processing material.

Abstract

Salah satu kemampuan guru yang berkaitan dengan pedagogik adalah mampu membuat rencana pembelajaran efektif yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa, untuk menciptakan hal itu dibutuhkan sebuah inovasi untuk mendesain pembelajaran. Didactical design research (DDR) dipandang sebagai sebuah paradigma inovasi pembelajaran dalam memberikan solusi atas permasalahan sulitnya guru dalam membuat rencana pembelajaran yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa di kelas, selain itu didactical design research dipandang sebagai salah satu cara dalam mengembangkan kompetensi pedagogik guru, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji paradigma DDR dalam menembangkan kompetensi pedagogik guru, metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan kajian literatur dari berbagai sumber baik jurnal, buku, dan sumber lain yang mendukung. Penelitian ini diharapkan memberikan wawasan dan pengetahuan bagi penelitia dalam mengembangkan penelitian menggunakan didactical design research, selain itu penelitian ini diharapkan memberikan panduan kepada guru dalam membuat desain pembelajaran yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa, sehingga proses pembelajaran tercipta dengan nyata dan bermakna.

Abstract

Paper ini memuat sebagian kecil dari hasil penelitian yang dilakukan selama tiga tahun oleh Utari, Suryadi, Rukmana, Dasari, dan Suhendra (1998-2000) yang berfokus pada upaya pengembangan kemampuan berfikir matematik tingkat tinggi siswa sekolah dasar di Jawa Barat. Tujuan utama penelitian ini antara lain mencakup: (1) mengidentifikasi jenis kemampuan berfikir matematik tingkat tinggi yang bisa dikembangkan, (2) mengembangkan model bahan ajar yang sesuai, dan (3) mengembangkan alternatif model pembelajaran yang kondusif untuk pengembangan kemampuan berfikir matematik tingkat tinggi di sekolah dasar.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article explains mistakes made by junior high school students in solving Pythagorean Theorem problems as well as analysis of students’ difficulties in applying mathematical concepts (epistemological obstacles), in which these were reflected in their test answers. This research used descriptive exploratory method to describe symptom and phenomena, which occurs within the students’ mind while solving the problem. Data were obtained from a test of Pythagorean Theorem problems given to 99 students from three different schools clusters. Results suggested that students tends to use a quick way to solve the problems without adequate understanding of the concept, remember the term alone without a profound understanding of the concept, fail in solving the problems with implicit information and the problem that requires visual representation in the process of solving the problem. Students also did not like the word problems or a problem with long questions. Teachers play a pivotal role in helping the students to overcome epistemological obstacles such as by giving the students more exercises as well as using different tools and technique in teaching the concept. ABSTRAKArtikel ini menyajikan kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh siswa sekolah menengah pertama dalam menyelesaikan soal-soal terkait teorema phytagoras dan juga analisis mengenai kesulitan siswa dalam mengaplikasikan konsep matematik (epistemological obstacle). Kesalahan-kesalahan ini dapat dilihat dari jawaban yang diberikan siswa pada tes yang diberikan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif untuk menjelaskan fenomena yang terjadi pada siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal-soal terkait teorema Phytagoras. Data yang diperoleh pada penelitian ini berasal dari hasil tes soal-soal Teorema phytagoras yang diberikan pada 99 siswa dari tiga cluster sekolah yang berbeda. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa siswa cenderung menggunakan cara cepat untuk menyelesaikan persoalan tanpa memahami konsep, mengingat rumus secara utuh tanpa pemahaman yang mendalam terkait konsep phytagoras, gagal menyelesaikan soal yang memuat informasi yang implisit dan soal yang memuat informasi yang disajikan secara visual. Hasil wawancara menunjukkan bahwa siswa tidak suka soal cerita dan soal yang disajikan secara panjang lebar. Guru memainkan peran yang sangat penting dalam membantu siswa untuk mengatasi epistemological obstacle seperti dengan memberikan siswa latihan soal serta menggunakan berbagai media dan teknik pengajaran dalam mengajarkan konsep.
