Abstract

This study examines how health education influences dental care behavior and contributes to shifting health values among urban communities in Makassar, Indonesia. Although dental and oral health is an essential component of overall well-being, preventive dental care is often treated as secondary to curative treatment, especially when individuals seek dental services only after experiencing pain or oral health problems. Using a sociological health perspective, this article explores how health education programs shape knowledge, attitudes, and everyday practices related to dental maintenance. The study highlights that health education delivered through campaigns, seminars, counseling, and educational materials can improve public awareness of oral hygiene, encourage regular tooth brushing, reduce harmful dietary habits, and promote routine dental check-ups. More importantly, the findings indicate a gradual shift in health values: dental care is increasingly understood not merely as a medical response to illness but as part of a preventive and healthy lifestyle. However, this behavioral transformation remains uneven. Socioeconomic barriers, particularly the cost of dental services and unequal access to adequate care, continue to limit the ability of low-income groups to translate knowledge into consistent practice. The study argues that effective dental health education must be integrated with broader efforts to reduce access inequalities. By linking behavioral change with social and economic contexts, this article contributes to sociological discussions on preventive health behavior, public health education, and value transformation in urban Indonesia.

Abstract

The transition to renewable energy has largely been approached from a technical and policy-oriented perspective, while the social, symbolic, and religious dimensions remain underexplored. This study examines the acceptance of solar energy technology in Balinese temples in Legian, Bali, by analyzing the meaning of energy in Tri Hita Karana and the symbolism of Surya in Balinese Hindu cosmology. The study also investigates how religious habitus and symbolic capital shape the technology's legitimacy and identifies barriers related to economic capital and technical capacity. This research employed a qualitative case study design, employing in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving temple caretakers, devotees, and village authorities. The findings indicate that solar technology is not perceived as something foreign, but as an extension of the cosmic energy associated with Surya. Its integration into temple spaces involves cultural negotiations regarding sacred space, ritual practices, and temple aesthetics. The technology's legitimacy is generated through religious practices and symbolic authority within the religious sphere. However, its implementation remains constrained by limited economic resources and technical capacity rather than cultural resistance. Theoretically, this study extends Bourdieu's framework by showing that technology adoption is the result of the interaction between habitus, symbolic capital, and economic capital in a socio-religious field.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: The 2023 report from the Tuberculosis Working Group of the Directorate for Prevention and Control of Communicable Diseases, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, showed an increase in detected pulmonary TB cases from 724,309 cases in 2022 to 821,200 cases in 2023. This increase aligns with the coverage rate of pulmonary TB rising from 68% in 2022 to 77% in 2023. The estimated detection of pulmonary TB cases in Indonesia from 2023-2024 is around 1,060,000 cases. At the provincial level, the case notification achievements showed that West Papua Province had a notification coverage of 112%, while West Papua Province had only 66%. Objective: The aim of this research is to examine the influence of physical environmental factors at home and the habits of pulmonary TB sufferers on the incidence of pulmonary TB as a factor in the transmission of pulmonary TB in South Sorong Regency. Method: The method used in this research is quantitative analysis with a cross sectional approach by carrying out logistic regression analysis. Result: The results of the study showed that the type of floor, humidity, the habit of opening and closing windows, cough etiquette and the habit of expelling phlegm were related to the incidence of pulmonary TB. There is no relationship between lighting levels, residential density, ventilation area, temperature and smoking habits on the incidence of pulmonary TB. The habit of expelling phlegm is the variable that has the most influence on the incidence of pulmonary TB (aPR 7.630 95%CI 1.991-29.242).. Conclusion: This research recommends promotion of stone ethics and monitoring of the housing conditions of pulmonary TB sufferers. Evaluation of programs and infrastructure improvements by the South Sorong District Health Service.

Abstract

Introduction: . The goal of malaria control in Indonesia is to achieve gradual elimination by 2030, starting from the district/city, provincial, regional, and national levels. The process will begin with elimination assessments for Java and Bali in 2023; Sumatra, Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB), and Sulawesi in 2025; Kalimantan and Maluku Utara in 2027; Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and Maluku in 2028; Papua Barat and Papua in 2029; with national elimination certification expected by 2030 Objective: . This study aims to understand the inputs, activities, and outputs conducted by South Sorong District in maintaining malaria elimination Method: The method used is a qualitative approach with interviews conducted with nine informants, including healthcare workers and community members. Result: The results of this study indicate that in South Sorong District, trained healthcare workers and cross-professional collaboration play a crucial role in malaria elimination, despite limited numbers and funding from APBN, APBD, and the Global Fund. The Bela Kampung program raises community awareness, supported by routine monitoring and control activities such as blood surveys and the distribution of insecticide-treated nets. The district has successfully maintained its malaria elimination status despite challenges such as community dishonesty and budget constraints. Optimizing community awareness, cross-sector collaboration, the commitment of the regent, and program innovation help address these challenges. Conclusion: The study recommends increasing the number of healthcare workers and strengthening cross-sector collaboration to maintain malaria elimination in South Sorong District. Additionally, increasing funding and ongoing support from the local government are necessary.

Abstract

Introduction: This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences of construction workers in accessing health services in Paccerakkang Subdistrict, Biringkanaya District, Makassar City. As part of the informal sector workforce, construction workers face various health risks as well as structural limitations in obtaining adequate health services. This study adopts a health sociology perspective to examine how social, economic, and public policy factors influence access to health services among informal workers. Methods: This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The research participants consisted of six construction workers selected purposively based on the criteria of being aged 18–60 years, actively working as construction workers, and having experience in accessing health services within the past year. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation in the workers’ work and residential environments, and documentation to strengthen the empirical context of the study. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis through processes of data reduction, categorisation, and meaning-making to identify patterns of experience and the participants’ interpretations of access to health services. Results: The findings indicate that construction workers perceive health services not only as a means of medical treatment but also as a form of social protection that helps maintain work productivity and family well-being. The main barriers to accessing health services include economic constraints, unstable income, long working hours, and the lack of occupational safety facilities. Some participants also highlighted complicated administrative procedures and high treatment costs, although in general they did not experience discrimination from health professionals. To overcome these barriers, construction workers developed adaptive strategies such as utilising formal health services and traditional treatment, maintaining health through healthy lifestyles, and relying on social support from family members and co-workers. Conclusion: This study concludes that the experiences of construction workers in accessing health services are shaped by the interaction of economic, social, occupational, and health policy factors. Therefore, stronger synergy between government institutions, health service providers, and worker communities is required to create a health service system that is more equitable, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of informal sector workers in urban settings.

Abstract

Hospitals are healthcare facilities aimed at improving health recovery and maintenance. Patient safety is a top priority in hospitals, and it is related to issues of quality and image, ranging from cases of malpractice, negligence in patient care, discrimination against patients, to other criminal acts. To date, patient safety has not fully become an integral part of healthcare practices. This is reflected in the continued occurrence of ethical violations in the form of malpractice, discrimination, and other forms of behavior. Every healthcare profession has a code of ethics that serves as a guideline for professional behavior. The existence of a code of ethics should be the foundation for building a patient safety culture. Law Number 44 of 2009 concerning Hospitals explicitly states that patient safety is a top priority in healthcare. This study used a literature review method by examining various online scientific publication sources. The results of the literature search were then analyzed and processed to produce in-depth discussions and conclusions relevant to the research topic. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of a professional code of ethics by medical personnel plays a significant role in building a patient safety culture. This culture can only be realized if supported by an ethical organizational climate, open communication, and patient safety-oriented leadership. Therefore, professional ethics must be a core component of a hospital service system oriented toward patient safety. Furthermore, it is important to recognize that implementing a patient safety culture relies not only on medical personnel but also involves all elements within the hospital, including management, administrative staff, and other support personnel. Commitment from all parties to consistently implementing patient safety principles can strengthen the desired safety culture.
