Abstract

Reading is a crucial skill for children's cognitive, social, and emotional growth, yet interest in reading is waning in the digital age. This study investigates interactive reading strategies to enhance engagement in early childhood and elementary students, employing qualitative methods such as observation and interviews. It involved children aged 4-12 during a month-long reading program. Key findings demonstrate that techniques like storytelling, role-playing, open-ended questions, story mapping, paired reading, and book creation significantly boost children's focus and comprehension. The research supports Vygotsky’s social learning theory and Deci & Ryan’s self-determination theory, which highlight the importance of autonomy and relatedness in motivation. Despite some limitations, the study suggests that interactive reading can effectively enrich early literacy in educational environments.

Abstract

Cursive handwriting is one of the fundamental skills in Indonesian language learning at the elementary school level and plays an important role in students’ cognitive, motor, and affective development. However, over the past few decades, the practice of teaching cursive handwriting has gradually been marginalized due to the dominance of digital technology and shifts in educational paradigms. This article aims to comprehensively examine the urgency of cursive handwriting for elementary school students, particularly in the context of Indonesian language learning and the formation of national identity. This study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method, analyzing various research findings published over the last five years. The results indicate that cursive handwriting contributes positively to the improvement of literacy skills, concentration, fine motor coordination, as well as the development of students’ character and learning discipline. Furthermore, handwriting, including cursive writing, holds symbolic value as part of cultural heritage and national identity that should be preserved amid the ongoing digitalization of education. Therefore, cursive handwriting instruction is not only pedagogically relevant but also strategically important in fostering character development and national identity from an early age.

Abstract

Background. The rapid development of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed educational practices by creating new opportunities for creative and student-centered learning. In poetry writing, however, many junior high school students continue to experience difficulties in generating ideas, developing imagination, selecting appropriate diction, and expressing creative thoughts. These challenges indicate the need for an innovative instructional model that integrates students’ creative processes with AI-assisted learning. Purpose. This study aims to explore how the AI-assisted Anchor Eyes Learning Model improves junior high school students’ poetry writing skills by addressing the learning barriers they encounter during the creative writing process. Method. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design involving 70 eighth- and ninth-grade students from four junior high school classes in Sumenep Regency. Data were collected through classroom observations, reflective interviews with teachers and students, analysis of students’ poetry manuscripts before and after the implementation of the model, and supporting documentation. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, consisting of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing with triangulation and member checking to ensure trustworthiness. Results. The findings reveal that the AI-assisted Anchor Eyes Learning Model substantially enhanced students’ poetry writing by improving their ability to generate ideas, develop imaginative expression, select more appropriate diction, employ richer figurative language, and organize poetic structures more effectively. Reflective learning supported by AI tools also reduced students’ creative blocks, increased learning motivation, and enabled teachers to facilitate a more interactive and personalized writing process. Approximately 85% of teachers and students were already familiar with digital learning devices, facilitating the integration of AI into classroom activities. Conclusion. The AI-assisted Anchor Eyes Learning Model provides an effective pedagogical approach for improving poetry writing skills by transforming students’ creative writing processes while overcoming common obstacles in idea generation, language development, and creative expression.

Abstract

This research begins with the phenomenon of gender inequality that is still represented in the media, including animated films that often depict women in subordinate positions. The animated film Calamity, une Enfance de Martha Jane Cannary was chosen as the object of study because it features a female character who challenges patriarchal social norms in the 19th century. The purpose of this research is to analyze and understand the representation of gender equality in the film through the perspective of Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminism, by highlighting the female character's struggle to fight patriarchal structures and achieve existential freedom. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a content analysis approach, through observation, documentation, and note-taking techniques. Data were obtained from scenes, dialogues, and visual symbols that depict the main character's struggle to become an independent subject. The results show that the film displays three main forms of equality—namely, working, acquiring knowledge, and rejecting stereotypes—and shows the transformation of the female character from a passive object to an agent of change. In addition, the film also critiques forms of gender injustice such as stereotypes, subordination, and symbolic violence. In conclusion, Calamity is not only a medium of entertainment but also a visual representation of women's struggle to gain existence and equality in the midst of a patriarchal culture.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the deep learning approach in Indonesian language learning at the elementary school level. The study is motivated by the fact that conventional teacher-centered learning methods are still dominant, causing students to be less active, less critical, and easily bored during the learning process. The deep learning approach was chosen because it encourages students to understand learning materials more meaningfully through the application of mindful learning, meaningful learning, and joyful learning. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The research subjects consisted of elementary school teachers and students involved in Indonesian language learning. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that the implementation of the deep learning approach was able to create a more active, interactive, and meaningful learning process. The application of mindful learning helped students become more focused and aware during the learning process. Meaningful learning enabled students to understand the material by connecting it to their daily life experiences, while joyful learning created an enjoyable classroom atmosphere and increased students’ learning motivation. In addition, the deep learning approach also improved students’ language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as enhancing critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration skills. Therefore, the deep learning approach is considered relevant for implementation in Indonesian language learning at the elementary school level because it can improve the quality of learning and support the development of students’ 21st-century skills.
