Abstract

The aim of this study was to measure the effectiveness of English "Shock Day" to improve university students' speaking ability. It employed a quantitative method using the pre-experimental design. The subject of the research was the fourth-semester students in one of the private universities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, in the academic year of 2018/2019. The total population of this research was 76 students. The total number of the sample was 25 students were taken by cluster sampling technique. The instrument was a speaking test to obtain data on the students' speaking achievement through the implementation of English shock day. The data analysis found that the students' mean score in English speaking was significantly improved. The students' mean score in the pretest was 58.36, while their mean score in the posttest was 70.68. The t-table was also lower than the t-test, that is 2.093 < 6.650. Based on the result, the researchers concluded that the implementation of English shock day improved students' ability to speak.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out whether or not the use of movie is effective in enhancing the vocabulary achievement and finding out the students’ interest toward the use of movie. The research employs a pre-experimental research method. The population of this research is all the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Panca Rijang in academic year 2017/2018. The samples consist of 20 students was taken based on random sampling technique. The research data are collected using vocabulary test which is analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. The research result indicates that the use of movie is more effective in enhancing vocabulary achievement of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Rappang in academic year 2017/2018. The students’ result of posttest is higher than the students’ result of pretest (80 > 70. 625). The difference of those mean score is statistically significant; it is based on t-test value at significant level 0.05, the t- table is lower than t- test (2. 093 < 3. 54).

Abstract

The use of the cap "Songkok Recca" is believed to have begun in the reign of the 31st Bone King named Andi Mappanyukki. The "Songkok Recca" hat used can show the social strata of the wearer. This study aims to look at public perceptions in the use of these hats associated with the social stratification of the Bugis community in Bone Regency. The study was conducted in Awangpone District, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi Province, using a qualitative approach, with a purposive sampling technique in determining informants. The method of collecting data using observation and interviews, with the number of informant’s as many as ten people. Data analysis techniques in this study are qualitative data analysis techniques. The results show that there a shift in the use of "Songkok Recca" hats today. In terms of social stratification, the use of the hat "Songkok Recca" no longer shows the degree of someone, but nowadays it is more described as a form of local wisdom of the Bugis community in Bone Regency.

Abstract

The using of videos from YouTube channel in the EFL classroom is imperative to fill the educational needs of the younger generation. Although resources from textbook have remained the standard for centuries, currently, with the fast pace of the development of technology, the usage of YouTube videos in teaching and learning has become a trend. There are a few studies conducted on students’ perceptions of using YouTube to learn the English language. The objective of this research was to investigate the students’ perceptions on the use of YouTube in learning English process at English Education Department, Universitas Negeri Makassar Indonesia. Data were collected using a questionnaire that collected background information of participants and a five-point Likert scale to gauge the students’ perception use of the YouTube in EFL classroom. Findings from this research indicate that the majority of students showed a positive perception toward and a willingness to use YouTube in the EFL classroom. It was also discovered that the students have used YouTube to help them completed their course assignments and study tasks. Hence, it can be concluded that the students preferred to use English YouTube videos to help them enhance their English language level proficiency.

Abstract

Tujuan Pengabdian Pada Masyarakat ini adalah untuk Meningkatkan pemahaman pengelola jurnal Pengelola Jurnal sehingga dapat mengiperasikan OJS secara Full Daring, Meningkatkan jurnal terindeks Nasional dan Internasional dan Meningkatkan kemampuan  pemahaman pengelola terkait Indeksasi DOAJ. Metode kegiatan dilaksanakan dengan metode ceramah, dan pendampingan. Hasil pengabdian menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan pelatihan memberikan pengetahuan tambahan editor dalam mengelola proses penerbitan secara daring full dan sekitar 15 jurnal sudah siap untuk mendaftarkan index DOAJ.

Abstract

This research aims to describe and find out the lecturer reasons for using weekly quizzes in EFL classroom. This research used qualitative research design. The instrument of the research was interview. In order to get the sample, the researcher used cluster random sampling. There was one lecturer of English Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The result of the research showed that there are several reasons of the lecturer using weekly quizzes including to (a) increase students learning motivation, (b) make students feel challenged, (c) encourage students to be creative in answering questions and interact with each other, (d) avoid cheating in class, (e) know the extent of students understanding of the material that has been taught, (f) help the lecturer assess teaching in class and students activity, and (g) start the discussion in class. According to the results of the research, it can be concluded that the use of weekly quizzes in EFL classroom can be a tool to determine and measure students' understanding of the material that had been taught previously.

Abstract

It has been almost a year since we experienced the Covi-19 pandemic, which made us carry out learning activities from home. In filling that period, the researchers intends to conduct research that can add references to the learning process in this challenging time. The purpose of this research is to know students’ perception on the use of E- learning Media in Covid-19 pandemic era; the lecturers’ favorite e-learning media in Covid- 19 pandemic era; the students’ favorite e-learning media in Covid- 19 pandemic era and the factors affects the use of E- learning in the classroom. This study was a descriptive and use a mixed method consisted of quantitative and qualitative data. The sample of this study (n= 20) is the sixth semester undergraduate students from English Education Department of 2019/2020 academic year, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang, Indonesia. The results of this study showed that there are many E- learning media that the lecturers used in delivering the materials. The use of that media in learning process is less interested to the students. It was proved by the results of students’ perception. These scores are categorized as disagree or negative scores of perceptions if they are confirmed by using a Likert Scale. There are no students who strongly agree with the current e-learning process, there are only 3 students who agree, 11 students say they are moderate (55%), 5 students disagree and 1 student strongly disagree. However, the use of e-learning media in the current learning process is an absolute necessity. Favorite learning media that are often used by lecturers in teaching, such as Zoom, WhatsApp and LMS, while students prefer to be taught with WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Classroom, LMS, and Quizziz.

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic era has changed human life in the world. In education side, the learning process is forced to be carried out through full online (E-learning) since this pandemic era. There are many studies conducted on students’ perceptions of using E-learning to learn the English language while this challenges era. So, the researchers also want to conduct a study about it. The objective of this study was to investigate the students’ perceptions on the use of E-learning while COVID-19 pandemic era. Data were collected using a questionnaire that collected background information of participants and a five-point Likert scale to gauge the students’ perception use of the E-learning in EFL classroom while pandemic COVID-19 era. Findings from this research indicate that the most of students showed a negative perception toward to use E-learning in the EFL process. It was proved by the results of students’ perception. There is only 1 student who strongly agrees with the current e-learning process or said that the E-learning in pandemic COVID-19 era is effective, there are 10 students who said the E-learning is less effective, 1 students say they are moderate (4%), 12 students said E-learning is not effective and 3 student said E-learning is very not effective. There are many factors influenced the students’ perception on the use of E-learning media in COVID-19 pandemic era such as, the signal and network connection; limit of quota and expensive; lack of lecturers methods; lack of students’ motivation; limitation of time; and lack of interaction.

Abstract

This study aims to determine verbal linguistic intelligence, to determine the results learning English especially on students' speaking, and to find out the influence of verbal linguistic intelligence on learning outcomes in English students of class X IPA 1 of SMAN 1 Sidrap. This research is quantitative research; this type of research is a pre-experimental design research. The population in this study was all students of class X SMAN 1 Sidrap, amounting to 182 people, while the study sample was the entire population, namely students of class X IPA 1 SMAN 1 Sidrap, amounting to 32 people. The instruments used in this study were interviews, questionnaires, treatment and recording tools. The data analysis technique used is descriptive statistical analysis and simple regression test through the application of SPSS. Based on the results of descriptive statistical analysis, verbal linguistic intelligence obtained an average value of 84.94, the lowest value obtained 0, and the highest value 107 and are at a percentage of 56.25% are in the average category. The results of learning English in this case speaking students obtained an average value of 96, the lowest value of 0, and the highest value of 96 and are in the good category with a percentage of 65.625%. The simple regression test results obtained sig <α (0,000 <0.05). This means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted, which means there is a positive influence between verbal linguistic intelligence on learning outcomes of students of class X Science 1 of SMAN 1 Sidrap.

Abstract

This research discusses EFL students’ anxiety in oral presentation in thesis examinations. This research aims to reveal the factors causing students’ anxiety and the strategy that EFL students apply to overcome/reducing their anxiety. The researchers conducted this research in Islamic Higher Education and this research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The participants of this research were 7 (seven) EFL students that the data were analyzed using thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke (2016). Then, the researchers used Wilson’s (2004) model semi-structured interview that the researchers arranged as the research instruments. The results revealed that the factors causing students’ anxiety generally: linguistic factors and non-linguistic factors (psychology factors, environment factors, and individual factors). Furthermore, the researchers found that EFL students apply strategies to overcome anxiety in oral presentation: preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking, self-entertaining, and praying. Therefore, the lecturers have to know their students’ anxiety in oral presentation and they have to apply the best strategy in teaching English as Foreign Language.
