Abstract

This study aims to describe the effect of lecturer eye contact on student learning motivation and the students’ perception on it during their interaction in EFL classroom. It employs a descriptive method in cluster random sampling taking 30 students of English Education class. The data sources of this study were observation, questionnaire, and interview and analyzed descriptively. The observation results that students are more likely to pay attention to the material, more enthusiastic in learning and more respectful to the lecturers having and keeping an eye contact in the teaching and learning process. The result of the questionnaire shows that the lecturer eye contact significantly affects the students’ learning motivation indicated by the mean score of the questionnaire, that is 3.71 falling into high category. These two findings are supported by the data gained from the interview in which most students argued that lecturer eye contact has many positive impacts on their learning. An excessive eye contact of the lecturer to the students, however, can become a hindrance to draw students’ focus on the materials presented. Therefore, the lecturer eye contact to nurture students’ learning motivation should be considerably sufficient and not excessive.

Abstract

This study of cohesion in descriptive discourse was written by students of the English Department of FPBS IKIP Ujung Pandang. This study describes the types of cohesion used in the students’ discourse and the degree of cohesive harmony of the discourse. It is drawn from the facts that this type of cohesion occurs very frequently in every student’s discourse. Cohesion in the students’ discourse does not function well as the foundation of coherence, drawn from the degree of cohesive harmony of the students’ discourse. As mentioned, the degree of cohesive harmony of the students’ discourse is low. The low degree of cohesive harmony expresses that the cohesion of the discourse does not function well as the foundation of coherence. It reflects that, in general, the students do not stay long enough on the similar things they are on about.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the students' participation and the student's perceptions of the use of poster sessions in essay writing classes. A qualitative method was applied in this study. The study respondents were third-semester English Education Study Program students who took an essay writing class. Sixty-third-semester students from two classes were selected randomly to participate in the study. The participants consisted of 30 students. The reason for choosing the third-semester students was that they have studied Paragraph Writing in the previous semester. In other words, they have basic writing skills. Data was collected using classroom observation notes and semi-structured interviews. The study indicated that students were comfortable, confident, and continuously engaged in learning essay writing. The result further revealed that all students showed positive perceptions of the use of poster sessions. They felt enjoyed and satisfied in learning essay writing by using poster sessions. They thought this was a new way to learn writing using poster sessions. They showed their interest in learning. They not only improved their skills in essay writing but also improved their oral skills. It was recommended that further researchers examine students' writing ability using poster sessions and identify other aspects that foster students` success in a poster session.

Abstract

This exercise aims to find out how personal word notes affect students' vocabulary. This study used a one-group pre- and post-test experimental design with a focus on quality. According to research, students at MTs Babussalam can use Personal Words Notes (PWN) in class, based on the findings and discussion of chapters and findings of papers. The purposive sample that suits the two students is different. Test data (both after and after the test) are collected. The results show that the "Poor" frequency of the pretest mean score is 44.8. The coefficient of "Good" for the post-test mean score is 87.2. Therefore, a comparison of the student's vocabulary with personal notes can be calculated, which shows that the exercise is based on the student's vocabulary.
