Abstract

This study employed a descriptive research method with a mixed-methods approach to investigate the university students’ need in learning English reading at a private university in Southeast Sulawesi province, Indonesia. A descriptive design was used to analyze students’ needs in learning reading—particularly in relation to Islamic content—without manipulating variables. The research design followed a Needs Analysis framework in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), combining questionnaires for quantitative data and interviews for qualitative insights. The findings reveal that students are dominantly motivated by instrumental goals, with 87.75% aiming for better career opportunities, and high percentages driven by examination success (87%) and academic achievement (85%). Reading has been widely identified as a fundamental skill that plays a pivotal role in fostering vocabulary acquisition and enhancing academic literacy, particularly within the domain of Islamic studies. Students also expressed a preference for bilingual instruction, balancing Indonesian and English, to support comprehension and gradual exposure to authentic input. Overall, the study concludes that students’ motivations are multifaceted, encompassing career, academic, and disciplinary needs. These results underscore the importance of designing ESP-based English programs that integrate workplace relevance, academic literacy, and Islamic content within a flexible bilingual pedagogy.

Abstract

Mentoring in learning through Mentimeter Platform is highly essential for english teachers at SMA Negeri 12 Makassar. The unavailability of integrated technology-based learning media highlights the need to enhance teachers' creativity and the quality of learning, which must be addressed urgently. This training aims to boost teachers' creativity in developing IT-based English-learning media. This community service program adopts the Interactive Teaching and Learning method, using interviews as an instrument with a sample of 5 English teachers who also served as respondents in the activity through purposive sampling. The results of the program indicate improvements in teachers' skills in using Mentimeter and transforming conventional teaching materials into interactive, technology-based learning media. This progress was supported by students' enthusiasm, along with their high interest and motivation to engage with the learning English materials delivered by teachers using the Mentimeter platform. Moreover, the students’ active participation during the activities provided positive feedback and evaluations for the teachers, encouraging them to be more innovative and creative in designing technology-integrated materials and media. Students expressed a desire for more interactive and enjoyable learning experiences, which they found helpful in better understanding the material and actively participating in the learning process.

Abstract

This study examines the linguistic strategies employed in Instagram skincare advertisements and their role in constructing persuasive messages and reinforcing dominant beauty ideologies. The study adopts a qualitative method through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), utilizing Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework: textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. Data were collected purposively from five Instagram posts by prominent skincare brands, selected based on relevance and audience engagement. The analysis reveals the use of imperatives, emotive vocabulary, structured narratives, and authoritative tone to build trust, appeal to emotions, and promote aspirational beauty ideals. These linguistic choices contribute to a discourse that equates beauty with confidence, self-worth, and social acceptance. The study identifies how these advertisements implicitly link consumption with self-improvement, positioning skincare not merely as a product but as a lifestyle necessity. The findings suggest that skincare advertisements on Instagram function not only as marketing tools but also as ideological texts that shape consumer identity and perpetuate societal norms regarding beauty and self-care. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on discourse and digital media by highlighting the intersection of language, ideology, and consumer culture in online marketing practices.

Abstract

This study examines vocabulary teaching strategies used by an English teacher in a special education setting for students with hearing impairments in Indonesia, specifically at SLB Negeri Wonomulyo. Vocabulary is a fundamental component of language learning; however, students with hearing impairments encounter particular challenges due to limited auditory access, restricted language exposure, and diverse learning characteristics. These conditions often affect students’ ability to understand, retain, and use new vocabulary effectively. Therefore, implementing inclusive and adaptive instructional strategies is essential to support effective vocabulary acquisition and meaningful language learning. A qualitative descriptive research design was employed to obtain an in-depth understanding of instructional practices in the classroom. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with the English teacher and teaching assistant, and documentation of teaching materials used during the learning process. The collected data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring instructional patterns, teaching procedures, and vocabulary teaching strategies applied in the classroom context. The findings reveal that vocabulary instruction is conducted through several integrated strategies. These include individualized instruction tailored to students’ ability levels, multisensory learning through visual media, printed pictures, gestures, and Total Physical Response (TPR), collaboration with a teaching assistant to support classroom instruction and student engagement, and step-by-step instruction reinforced through frequent repetition. In addition, the teacher prioritizes the selection of functional vocabulary closely related to students’ daily lives in order to enhance meaningful learning, improve comprehension, and encourage practical language use in real-life situations. The study highlights that effective vocabulary instruction for students with hearing impairments relies on flexible, student-centered, and collaborative teaching practices. The findings provide empirical evidence supporting inclusive English language teaching in special education contexts and offer practical implications for teachers, practitioners, and future researchers working with learners with hearing impairments.
