Abstract

Reading comprehension skills are fundamental competencies that play an important role in the learning success of elementary school students. However, various studies indicate that students’ reading comprehension abilities remain relatively low, partly due to the use of less varied and insufficiently student-centered learning strategies. This study aims to systematically examine various learning strategies for reading comprehension skills among elementary school students through the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. The research was conducted by reviewing relevant scientific articles from national and international journal databases, which were then selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data were analyzed using content analysis to identify the types of learning strategies, implementation trends, and their impacts on students’ reading comprehension abilites. The findings reveal that guided reading strategies, KWL strategies, metacognitive strategies, cooperative learning, and text-based learning are the most frequently implemented strategies and have proven effective in improving elementary school students’ reading comprehension skills. These strategies enhance student engagement, text comprehension, and critical thinking skills. This study emphasizes that the implementation of active, systematic, and contextual learning strategies is essential for improving the quality of reading comprehension instruction in elementary schools.

Abstract

As the mid-2020s unfold, the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has transformed the reading literacy paradigm for Generation Alpha from the consumption of static texts to engagement with dynamic text-based interactions. This study aims to examine the role of GenAI as a cognitive partner in enhancing reading literacy through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of scholarly studies and policy documents published between 2021 and 2026. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the study synthesizes data from relevant national and international journal publications. The findings indicate that the use of technologies such as AI-powered reading assistants and interactive storytelling significantly improves elementary school students’ reading fluency, comprehension, and active engagement. However, the review also identifies several critical challenges, including the risk of AI hallucinations, the potential decline of cognitive skills due to excessive technological dependence, and the widening AI divide. The study concludes that the effectiveness of GenAI in education largely depends on teachers’ digital literacy and the development of an AI Literacy Framework that emphasizes metacognitive awareness and ethical competencies. Furthermore, inclusive policies are required to ensure that this literacy transformation can be accessed equitably by all segments of Generation Alpha.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), has brought significant changes to the field of education. One of the emerging innovations in learning is AI-powered chatbots, which provide interactive support to students throughout the learning process. This study aims to examine the integration of AI and chatbots in Indonesian language learning and their impact on improving the writing skills of upper elementary school students. The study employed a library research approach by analyzing relevant scholarly literature on the use of AI, educational chatbots, and writing instruction in elementary education. The findings indicate that AI and chatbot technologies can assist students in generating writing ideas, expanding vocabulary, improving grammar and spelling, and enhancing motivation to write. In addition, chatbots enable students to receive immediate and personalized feedback, making the learning process more effective and engaging. Nevertheless, the implementation of AI in education still requires teacher guidance to ensure that the technology is used wisely, critically, and in alignment with instructional objectives. Therefore, the integration of AI and chatbots has considerable potential as an innovative instructional approach to improving the writing skills of upper elementary school students in the digital era.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the effect of a deep learning-based chatbot intervention on narrative writing literacy and cognitive load among elementary school students. Specifically, the study focuses on how the use of the chatbot can enhance student engagement in the writing process, support the development of critical thinking skills, and reduce affective and cognitive barriers during learning. Research Method: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a Pretest–Posttest Control Group approach. The sample consisted of 40 fourth-grade students from SD 030 Bagan Jaya, divided into an experimental group receiving the chatbot intervention and a control group receiving conventional writing instruction. Data were collected through narrative writing literacy tests and a cognitive load assessment rubric. Data analysis was conducted using an independent t-test to determine the effect of the intervention on both research variables. Research Findings: The results indicated that the experimental group experienced a significant improvement in narrative writing literacy and a reduction in cognitive load compared to the control group. The posttest mean scores for writing literacy increased substantially, while the standard deviation decreased, indicating more consistent student performance. The chatbot functioned as a digital tutor providing adaptive scaffolding, real-time feedback, and guidance that facilitated idea generation, text structuring, and revision skills. This intervention also enhanced student motivation and engagement, creating a safe and interactive learning environment. Novelty: This study emphasizes that the use of deep learning-based chatbots is not only relevant for secondary education but also effective at the elementary level. The findings contribute new insights by demonstrating that integrating AI into narrative writing instruction can serve as an innovative pedagogical strategy that simultaneously supports literacy development, critical thinking skills, and student motivation.
