Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model integrated with STEM on students’ collaboration and problem-solving skills. It employed a quasi-experimental method using a pretest-posttest control group design. The population included all seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Plupuh in the 2024/2025 academic year. The sample was selected through cluster random sampling, with Class VII C designated as the experimental group and Class VII D as the control group. Data were collected through tests, observations, and documentation. The data were analyzed using an independent t-test with a significance level of 0.05. The analysis revealed that the STEM-integrated PBL model had a significant effect on students’ problem-solving skills, with a significance value of 0.028 (< 0.05), because this learning provides a holistic, real, collaborative learning experience and encourages higher-level thinking. While the collaboration skills showed a significance value of 0.011 (< 0.05) because the learning process emphasizes group work in solving real problems, thus encouraging interaction, shared responsibility, productive communication, and positive interdependence between group members. These findings indicate there is an effect of implementing Problem Based Learning (PBL) integrated with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) on students’ collaboration and problem-solving skill. Problem Based Learning (PBL) integrated STEM allows students to broaden their horizons, discuss and collaborate in problem solving, encourage students to refine their knowledge through discussion, communicate in groups and respect each other when there are differences of opinion, critically assess group processes and work, provide feedback, and agree on the best solution, which directly improves various aspects of collaboration and develops competencies to address the complex challenges of their future.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the RODE learning model in supporting students' science numeracy skills in a higher education context. The research was conducted in the Primary School Teacher Education department within the Basic Concepts of Astrophysics course, focusing on fluid materials. A qualitative design was employed to describe the planning, implementation, and assessment stages of the RODE model. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings indicate that, at the planning stage, the lecturer team aligned course learning outcomes with science numeracy indicators and developed instructional materials, including lesson plans, teaching resources, student worksheets, and assessment instruments. During implementation, the RODE syntax was applied through four stages: Read (engagement with learning materials), Outline (concept organization and worksheet-based activities), Discussion (group presentations and interactive dialogue), and Evaluation (reflection and assessment activities). At the assessment stage, students' performance was evaluated through worksheet activities and essay tests designed to reflect science numeracy indicators. The results suggest that the RODE model can be feasibly implemented to support science numeracy by orienting learning processes in higher education. However, the findings are limited to a specific instructional context and do not imply generalizable causal effects. This study contributes by providing a context-specific description of how the RODE model can be integrated with science numeracy practices at the university level.

Abstract

The imbalance between the demands of 21st-century globalization and students’ higher-order thinking skills, along with the limited availability of learning media integrating local wisdom, has caused science learning to be less contextual and meaningful. This research aimed to identify scientific knowledge embedded in the traditional production process of jamu gendong as a form of local wisdom. The study employed a qualitative method using an ethnographic approach, involving five jamu gendong producers as primary respondents and six science teachers as informants. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using interactive analysis techniques. The findings revealed that the jamu gendong production process contained scientific concepts related to biology, physics, and chemistry. These results indicated that reconstructed local knowledge could function as a contextual science learning resource that supported students’ understanding of scientific concepts, fostered higher-order thinking skills, and strengthened cultural appreciation.
