Abstract

This study aimed to describe the application of a differentiated approach in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) learning in elementary schools. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a multisite study design. The data of this research consist of descriptive information related to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of differentiated instruction in the IPAS subject. The data were obtained from teachers and students who were directly involved in the IPAS learning activities. Data collection techniques in the form of observation, depth interviews, and documentation analysis. The data were analyzed using the interactive analysis model by Miles & Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The subjects of the study were teachers and students from three elementary schools in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, namely SD Negeri Rappokaleleng, SD Inpres Tamanyeleng, and SD Negeri Tanabangka. The results show that teachers have applied a differentiated approach to three main aspects of learning: content, process, and product. In the planning stage, teachers conducted diagnostic assessments to identify students' learning styles and interests as the basis for developing flexible teaching modules. In implementation, teachers present materials in various forms and provide a choice of activities and products according to students' learning preferences. The assessment is carried out in a formative and summative manner with a varied approach and adjusted to the individual needs of the student. A differentiated approach has been proven to increase students' active participation, motivation, and independence in learning. However, its implementation still faces a number of obstacles, such as limited time, facilities, and students' readiness for independent learning. Therefore, this study recommends the importance of systemic support and teacher capacity building so that the implementation of differentiated approaches can take place in a sustainable and equitable manner in primary schools.

Abstract

The contemporary academic-centric educational paradigm, with its overemphasis on academic achievement and high-stakes assessments, has raised concerns about its impact on students' holistic development, particularly on socio-emotional dimensions such as empathy. This study aims to systematically examine the construction of this paradigm in the literature, analyze its influence on the degradation of students' empathy, and formulate effective counter-strategies. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 44 relevant journal articles from the last decade, the study found that a dominant academic orientation creates a competitive climate and significant psychological stress, which in turn erodes empathy through academic stress, social comparison, and weakened cooperative relationships. The findings also highlight that the integration of Social Emotional Learning (SEL), the management of a cooperative classroom climate, and the reduction of academic stress are key strategies for restoring the balance between academic achievement and character development. It concludes that a shift towards a more humanistic and balanced approach to education is crucial to prevent the marginalization of empathy in the education system.

Abstract

This study addresses the low reading interest among elementary school students by integrating picture storybooks into drama activities. The research aims to explore strategies for implementing picture storybook literacy through dramatization and to examine students’ responses to this approach. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study was conducted with fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kedungsari. Data were collected through participatory observation, documentation, and teacher reflection, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings reveal that the implementation process consists of three stages: preparation, dramatization, and reflection. In the preparation stage, teachers selected age-appropriate picture storybooks and facilitated shared reading sessions to stimulate imagination and comprehension. During dramatization, students adapted the stories into simple scripts and performed them in groups, enhancing verbal expression, creativity, and collaboration. The reflection stage allowed students to discuss moral values and learning experiences, reinforcing comprehension and metacognitive awareness. Results show that students demonstrated high enthusiasm, improved understanding of narrative texts, effective teamwork, and increased confidence in verbal and nonverbal expression. The integration of picture storybook literacy with drama not only strengthened reading skills but also fostered social interaction, empathy, and critical thinking. Overall, this approach proved effective in creating an engaging and meaningful literacy experience, supporting the development of 21st-century skills in elementary education.

Abstract

This research aims to develop and test the feasibility and effectiveness of the Timeline Poster Media in enhancing the narrative writing skills of 3rd-grade elementary school students. The study is motivated by the common problem of students struggling to construct coherent and chronologically sound story plots due to a lack of structured visual aids guiding narrative sequence. This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE Model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) as its systematic framework. The Analysis phase involved needs assessment. The Development phase included product creation and validation by material and media experts, resulting in a Very Feasible category rating, indicating high theoretical and practical suitability. The Implementation phase utilized a one-group pretest posttest design for effectiveness testing. The results of the effectiveness test showed a statistically significant increase in the students' average narrative writing scores after the media's application, supported by t-test analysis which led to the rejection of the null hypothesis. This finding confirms that the Timeline Poster Media is effective in improving students' ability to organize narrative text chronologically. In conclusion, the Timeline Poster Media is proven to be a feasible, practical, and effective learning tool to boost 3rd-grade students' narrative writing skills.
