Abstract

This study aims to assess how students’ perceptions of the use of English-Indonesian code-switching at SMP Unggulan Darussalam Barandasi. There are 8 students in the eighth grade who participated in this study. This study is a qualitative descriptive study that uses observation and interviews as data collection techniques. This study uses two theories, namely linguistic theory and sociolinguistic theory. Based on the findings, the data shows that there are 3 stages in finding the effectiveness of language use during the learning process, namely: language use (context of use, type of code-switching, purpose, strategy), effectiveness of using code-switching (contextual appropriateness, skill level, learning evaluation) and students understanding (conceptual understanding, ability to identify and strategy) and there is a comparison of students. Students see code-switching as a tool that facilitates understanding of difficult material. However, students agree that the use of code-switching must be done in a balanced way so as not to reduce the quality of English exposure.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the influence of EFL students’ self-confidence and motivation on speaking performance. A quantitative approach with an ex post facto design was employed. The research population consisted of English Language Education students from Universitas Negeri Makassar, batch 2022, and cluster random sampling was used to select twenty-eight respondents. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires and a speaking test. The data were analyzed using f-test statistic with a significant value of 0.05. The results of the data analysis revealed that the sig. value of f-test is .000 < 0.05, therefore the H1 is accepted, where there is a significant influence between self-confidence and motivation on speaking performance, and H0 is rejected. As a result, the research findings suggest several implications. Firstly, highlight the need for fostering a supportive and encouraging classroom environment. Secondly, incorporating students’ interests and real-life scenarios into the curriculum can increase their motivation. Thirdly, the research suggests that integrating activities that build both self-confidence and motivation into the EFL curriculum can lead to significant improvements in speaking performance.

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of the mind mapping technique on enhancing students’ vocabulary achievement. Employing a pre-experimental research design, data were gathered through the administration of pre-tests and post-tests. The study population consisted of eleventh-grade students from SMPN 1 Tellu Limpoe, with a sample of 30 students selected through cluster random sampling. The findings reveal a statistically significant improvement in vocabulary achievement following the implementation of the mind mapping technique. The results of the T-test analysis show a T-value of 0.001, which is considerably lower than the predetermined significance level of 0.05, indicating a meaningful effect. Furthermore, the N-Gain score analysis categorizes the level of improvement as a medium category. These outcomes suggest that the mind mapping technique contributes significantly to enhancing students’ vocabulary achievement.

Abstract

This study examines the factors that influence the motivation of grade 11 students to learn English at SMAN 10 Jeneponto. This study used a mixed-methods approach by combining quantitative data and qualitative data. Data were collected through questionnaires completed by 30 students and semi-structured interviews with nine students, selected based on their motivation levels using a purposive sampling technique, to gain deeper insight into their learning experiences. Based on the questionnaire results, students exhibit varying levels of motivation. Namely, 33.33% of students have high motivation, 56.67% have moderate motivation, and 10% have low motivation. Learning motivation is influenced by internal factors, interest in English, self-confidence, personal goals, personal satisfaction, and achievement, and external factors, support from family, peer influence, teaching methods, and school environment. Highly motivated students generally have a great interest in English and receive positive support from their surroundings. In contrast, students with low motivation tend to experience difficulties in understanding the material and lack confidence in using English. Teachers play a crucial role in fostering students’ learning motivation by implementing diverse, engaging, and student-centered teaching methods that align with their needs and learning styles. Therefore, the use of varied teaching methods is recommended to improve students’  motivation in learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to see the learning model applied by lecturers in improving students' English skills and to see the lecturer and students' views on the English for Aviation course. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study design, where data is collected through observations checklist and conducting interviews with purposive sampling. Data were analysed by data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing and verification. The use of an integrated learning model is considered to take an important role by lecturers considering the short duration of learning, where several aspects of English Skills are combined into one learning material. In addition, speaking and listening are the two aspects that lecturers pay attention to considering that aviation learning is more communication with passengers. Students' views on the application of English for Aviation have had a positive impact on improving listening and speaking skills. However, students feel that certain aspects, such as the lack of variety in instructional methods and the limited class duration, hinder the achievement of optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

Motivation plays a vital role in shaping students’ learning engagement and academic success in higher education. This study explores the factors influencing motivation among students in the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM). Using Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Achievement Goal Theory (AGT) as frameworks, a qualitative case study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with selected participants. The findings show that motivation is influenced by both intrinsic factors, such as personal interest and the desire for mastery, and extrinsic factors, including grades, recognition, and career aspirations. Peer support and lecturer teaching approaches also emerged as significant contributors to students’ motivation. These results highlight the need for educators to foster supportive learning environments that strengthen students’ motivation and engagement.
