Abstract

This study examines the factors that influence the motivation of grade 11 students to learn English at SMAN 10 Jeneponto. This study used a mixed-methods approach by combining quantitative data and qualitative data. Data were collected through questionnaires completed by 30 students and semi-structured interviews with nine students, selected based on their motivation levels using a purposive sampling technique, to gain deeper insight into their learning experiences. Based on the questionnaire results, students exhibit varying levels of motivation. Namely, 33.33% of students have high motivation, 56.67% have moderate motivation, and 10% have low motivation. Learning motivation is influenced by internal factors, interest in English, self-confidence, personal goals, personal satisfaction, and achievement, and external factors, support from family, peer influence, teaching methods, and school environment. Highly motivated students generally have a great interest in English and receive positive support from their surroundings. In contrast, students with low motivation tend to experience difficulties in understanding the material and lack confidence in using English. Teachers play a crucial role in fostering students’ learning motivation by implementing diverse, engaging, and student-centered teaching methods that align with their needs and learning styles. Therefore, the use of varied teaching methods is recommended to improve students’  motivation in learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to see the learning model applied by lecturers in improving students' English skills and to see the lecturer and students' views on the English for Aviation course. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study design, where data is collected through observations checklist and conducting interviews with purposive sampling. Data were analysed by data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing and verification. The use of an integrated learning model is considered to take an important role by lecturers considering the short duration of learning, where several aspects of English Skills are combined into one learning material. In addition, speaking and listening are the two aspects that lecturers pay attention to considering that aviation learning is more communication with passengers. Students' views on the application of English for Aviation have had a positive impact on improving listening and speaking skills. However, students feel that certain aspects, such as the lack of variety in instructional methods and the limited class duration, hinder the achievement of optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a significant correlation between teachers' teaching style and students' learning motivation in learning English at SMPN 27 Makassar. The variables in this study consisted of teachers' teaching style as the independent variable (X) and students' learning motivation as the dependent variable (Y). The population of the study was all VIII-grade students of SMPN 27 Makassar, totaling 313 students, with a research sample of 35 students from class VIII.8 selected using the purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was a Likert scale-based closed questionnaire, each consisting of 15 items for teacher teaching style and 16 items for student learning motivation. The data were analyzed using the Pearson product-moment correlation statistical technique to determine the closeness of the correlation between variables. The results of the analysis show that the calculated r count is 0.587, while the r table at the 5% significance level with N = 35 is 0.344. Because r count (0.587) > r table (0.344), it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between teacher teaching style and student learning motivation. This study concludes that teachers' teaching style has an important role in increasing students' learning motivation.

A descriptive quantitative research design was used, with data collected through a learning style questionnaire and a speaking performance test. A purposive sample of 30 students participated in the study. The findings show that the auditory learning style was the most preferred, chosen by 14 students (47%), followed by the visual learning style (10 students or 33%) and the kinesthetic learning style (6 students or 20%). These findings suggest that students' learning styles influence their speaking performance and highlight the importance of using varied teaching strategies to support learners with different preferences.

Abstract

This study investigates the quality of paragraph writing in dissertation abstracts composed by doctoral students in the English Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Motivated by recurring challenges in abstract writing, particularly in terms of coherence, cohesion, and academic language use, this research aims to identify strengths and weaknesses within student abstracts and evaluate the presence of essential abstract components. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the study analyzed nine abstracts written over the past five years using document analysis and the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that while most abstracts include key components—such as background, objectives, methods, and results—they often lack explicit concluding statements. Strengths identified include clear topic sentences, formal academic tone, and logical organization. However, issues such as limited use of cohesive devices, partial coherence, redundancy, and verbosity were prevalent in several abstracts. These shortcomings hinder the overall clarity and impact of the writing. The study highlights the importance of structured academic writing training, particularly utilizing cohesion strategies and effective summarization. The results offer valuable insights for enhancing doctoral-level academic writing instruction and can serve as a foundation for further research into writing pedagogy in English as a second language contexts.

Abstract

As evidence-based practice in English Language Teaching (ELT) grows, postgraduate students' quantitative research proficiency is critical. However, students from humanities backgrounds often exhibit significant apprehension. This mixed-methods study conducted a needs analysis to explore the self-efficacy, attitudes, and learning needs of 30 incoming Master's students in an Indonesian ELT program before a mandatory quantitative methodology course. Data were collected via a questionnaire with quantitative scales and qualitative open-ended questions. Findings reveal a paradox: students perceive quantitative skills as highly useful for their careers (M=4.57) but report high anxiety (M=4.10) and low self-efficacy in statistical tasks (M=2.13). Qualitative themes indicate that anxiety is rooted in past experiences and exacerbated by a reluctance to seek help. Motivation is highly instrumental, focused on thesis completion. The study concludes that this cohort is pragmatically motivated but emotionally and technically underprepared, necessitating a pedagogy that explicitly addresses anxiety and builds practical, thesis-relevant skills.

Abstract

Academic writing is a cornerstone of higher education, yet for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, it presents significant challenges related to linguistic competence, genre mastery, and writing anxiety. This study investigates the impact of a novel pedagogical model integrating Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and Positive Psychology (PP) on multiple dimensions of student engagement. The study was conducted within a compulsory "Academic Writing for Professionals" course for English Literature students at Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM). Employing a mixed-methods, quasi-experimental design with 65 third-year students, the intervention group (n=33) engaged with the PjBL-PP model, while a comparison group (n=32) followed a traditional curriculum. Data were collected via pre- and post-tests measuring academic writing self-efficacy, writing apprehension, and a multi-dimensional student engagement scale (cognitive, behavioral, emotional). Qualitative data from project portfolios and semi-structured interviews were used to explore these dimensions and the concept of social presence. ANCOVA results showed the intervention group demonstrated significantly higher cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement, and higher self-efficacy (p < .001), alongside a significant reduction in writing apprehension (p < .001). Qualitative analysis revealed how the model fostered deep cognitive processing through authentic tasks, promoted sustained behavioral effort, created a positive emotional climate, and established a strong sense of social presence. This study provides a robust framework for transforming academic writing instruction, demonstrating that the synergy of PjBL and PP cultivates the holistic engagement necessary for EFL students to become confident and competent professional writers.
