Abstract

Penelitian terbaru menunjukkan bahwa tingkat literasi digital mahasiswa di Indonesia masih tergolong sedang dan belum merata pada berbagai dimensi keterampilan teknologi, informasi, dan berpikir kritis. Analisis dataset terhadap 2.921 mahasiswa perguruan tinggi di Indonesia menunjukkan skor rata-rata literasi digital sebesar 3,45 dari 5, yang menandakan tahap perkembangan menuju tingkat mahir (Simanjuntak et al., 2025). Sejalan dengan temuan tersebut, Dolezal et al. (2025) menegaskan perlunya program terstruktur yang mampu meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam mengintegrasikan teknologi dalam pembelajaran. Sebagai respons terhadap hal tersebut, program pengabdian masyarakat bertajuk “Integrasi Teknologi dan Pedagogi: Upaya Peningkatan Kompetensi Digital Mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris” dilaksanakan pada Agustus 2025 di Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Bahasa dan Sastra, Universitas Negeri Makassar. Workshop berbasis praktik langsung ini melibatkan 180 mahasiswa baru yang dibagi ke dalam lima kelas, masing-masing terdiri atas 36 mahasiswa dan dipandu oleh satu orang instruktur. Program ini bertujuan memperkuat literasi digital dan keterampilan perancangan pembelajaran mahasiswa melalui penerapan kerangka Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) dan model SAMR (Substitution–Augmentation–Modification–Redefinition). Melalui kegiatan berbasis pengalaman menggunakan LMS/CMS, alat berbasis AI (ChatGPT, Grammarly), platform e-portfolio, dan aplikasi multimedia (Canva, Padlet), mahasiswa menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam kepercayaan diri dan kemampuan digital mereka. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa 88% peserta mampu mengintegrasikan teknologi ke dalam rancangan pembelajaran dengan lebih efektif. Kegiatan ini juga menghasilkan komunitas kolaboratif bernama English Digital Innovators Community (EDIC) sebagai wadah pengembangan dan inovasi berkelanjutan di kalangan mahasiswa.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk menerapkan metode Word of the Week (WOW) yang dipadukan dengan media digital sebagai strategi untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas VII dan VIII di SMP Aisyiyah Sungguminasa. Latar belakang kegiatan ini adalah rendahnya penguasaan kosakata siswa yang disebabkan oleh metode pembelajaran yang monoton serta kurangnya paparan terhadap kosakata baru. Kegiatan ini menggunakan pendekatan berbasis praktik nyata dengan pelaksanaan selama bulan April 2025. Setiap minggu, siswa diperkenalkan dengan kosakata baru melalui media visual berbasis Canva dan audio pelafalan, yang kemudian dievaluasi melalui kompetisi Spelling Bee dan pembuatan Mini Word Book. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa metode ini efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan siswa untuk mengeja, memahami, dan menggunakan kosakata yang dipelajari. Penggunaan media digital yang menarik dan konsisten terbukti mampu menciptakan suasana belajar yang lebih interaktif, menyenangkan, dan bermakna.

Abstract

Second language (L2) learning is often undermined by significant psychological barriers like anxiety and fragile motivation, trapping students in surface-level memorization. This conceptual paper proposes a fundamental paradigm shift from a deficit-remediation model to one centered on fostering learner well-being. Drawing on a systematic literature review, we introduce 'Positive Language Pedagogy,' a framework integrating the five pillars of positive psychology's PERMA model (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment). We argue that this systematic integration proactively dismantles affective filters, cultivates intrinsic motivation, and builds psychological resources essential for deep learning. The result is a pathway toward not only linguistic competence but also the development of resilient, autonomous, and confident language learners.

Abstract

This study investigates how different learning styles—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic—influence students’ English-speaking performance. Speaking is widely recognized as the most challenging language skill, and students’ preferred modes of learning are believed to shape how effectively they develop oral proficiency. Using a descriptive quantitative design, data were collected from eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Makassar through a learning style questionnaire adapted from the VAK model and a speaking performance test assessed using Heaton’s criteria of accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility. The results reveal clear performance differences across learning style categories. Auditory learners achieved the highest mean score, classified as Very Good, demonstrating strong fluency and clear comprehensibility with only minor pronunciation or grammatical issues. Visual learners obtained a Good classification; they performed well overall but showed noticeable limitations in grammatical accuracy. Kinesthetic learners received a Fairly Good classification, exhibiting moderate ability and particular challenges in fluency, as their speech tended to be fragmented and required more processing time. These findings indicate that students' learning styles are meaningfully associated with their speaking performance, with auditory learners showing the greatest advantage—likely due to their preference for processing spoken input and verbal explanations. Meanwhile, kinesthetic learners may require more interactive, movement-based activities to support their oral production. The study underscores the importance of incorporating varied instructional strategies that align with different learning preferences. Teachers are encouraged to design multimodal speaking activities to ensure equitable support for all learner types and to maximize students’ opportunities for successful oral communication.

Abstract

The introduction chapter is a critical hurdle for graduate students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. It functions as a persuasive overture that must establish significance, delineate a clear scholarly gap, and articulate the study's purpose. This article provides a pedagogical framework for students and supervisors on constructing a high-quality research introduction. Drawing on genre analysis, specifically Swales’s Create a Research Space (CARS) model, the guide deconstructs the essential rhetorical moves for a compelling argument. Through a comparative analysis of strong and weak examples, it illustrates common pitfalls and effective strategies. The core of the article discusses the unique challenges faced by EFL scholars in contexts like Indonesia, proposing a scaffolded pedagogical model to improve research writing instruction. The aim is to equip emerging scholars with the conceptual tools and practical strategies to architect an introduction that meets the rigorous standards of international academic discourse.

Abstract

Non-verbal cues like eye contact and silence are crucial for classroom engagement, especially for passive students in English language learning environments. Nonetheless, these actions are frequently misunderstood, with eye contact taken as a sign of understanding and silence viewed as a lack of interest or uncertainty. This investigation examines the ways in which passive students utilize eye contact and silence as markers of engagement and comprehension, with the goal of offering a detailed insight into these non-verbal cues during classroom interactions. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed to observe six purposively selected passive students through the use of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Thematic Analysis was employed to analyse the data, facilitating the identification of patterns in students' non-verbal behaviours. The results indicate that eye contact from passive students frequently functions as a courteous gesture instead of an indication of comprehension, whereas silence embodies a range of motivations, such as cultural conventions, introspection, and evasion of social pressure. This study emphasizes the importance of educators embracing a contextual approach when interpreting non-verbal cues, thereby fostering a more inclusive learning environment that recognizes various communication styles.

Abstract

This mixed-methods study analyzes the need for a professional writing course for L2 students based on Positive Psychology (PP). It surveyed 70 third-semester EFL students at Universitas Negeri Makassar, categorized by academic achievement, on their interest in a PP-based curriculum focusing on Meaning, Accomplishment, Relationships, and Engagement. While all students showed high interest in the course's career relevance, significant differences emerged in their reception of PP pedagogy. Low-achieving students were most interested in strengths-based, confidence-building aspects, often due to past negative feedback experiences. High-achieving students were more motivated by authentic, real-world challenges. The findings reveal that even innovative pedagogies are not one-size-fits-all, highlighting the necessity of a pre-curricular diagnostic approach to meet the diverse cognitive and affective needs of students.

Abstract

Abstrak. The problem of this research is how to develop learning material of Introduction to Linguistics based on communicative approach for English Department students of FBS UNM, the factors that influence the implementation of materials design, worksheets exercises and lecture program which are expected to improve students' knowledge and language skills. This research is a development research that aims to develop Introduction to Linguistics learning material design based on communicative approach for students of the English Department of FBS UNM to improve students' knowledge and language skills. Developing learning material design that is planned will follow the research and development designed by Borg & Gall (1983). This research is an extensive process in assessing students' needs and then specially designed products are developed to improve their language knowledge and skills through a communicative approach based on Introduction to Linguistics learning. The population of this research was the students of English Department of FBS UNM. The research sample was the students of the English literature study program. The result of the research shows that, there is a form of Introduction to Linguistics prototype teaching materials, syllabus, and lecture contracts as well as communicative approach based on Linguistics learning quide book.Kata kunci: Developing Learning, Linguistics, Communicative Approach.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi efektivitas program pelatihan English Day bertajuk Word the Day yang dirancang untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa di SMAN 21 Makassar. Program pelatihan ini fokus pada peningkatan keterampilan berbicara, mendengarkan, penguasaan kosakata, dan pemahaman struktur bahasa. Pelatihan dilaksanakan selama dua minggu, dengan kombinasi antara pelajaran teoretis dan latihan praktis untuk memastikan siswa dapat mengintegrasikan bahasa Inggris dalam pembelajaran yang menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar sehari-hari. Hasil dari pre-test dan post-test menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa, terutama pada keterampilan berbicara dan mendengarkan. Selain itu, penggunaan bahasa Inggris dalam pengajaran mata pelajaran juga meningkat, dengan siswa menunjukkan kepercayaan diri yang lebih tinggi dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris dalam pelajaran mereka. Penelitian ini menegaskan pentingnya pengembangan profesional berkelanjutan dalam akuisisi bahasa bagi siswa, terutama bagi mereka yang belajar mata pelajaran non-bahasa Inggris seperti sains dan ekonomi. Dengan menyediakan pelatihan berbasis praktik, program English Day Word the Day tidak hanya meningkatkan keterampilan bahasa, tetapi juga berkontribusi pada terciptanya lingkungan pembelajaran yang lebih komunikatif dan interaktif di dalam kelas.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of the implementation of verbal response learning model to the speaking ability students of Class X Madrasah Aliyah PP DDI As-Salman Allakuang Sidenreng Rappang Regency. This research was conducted in Madrasah Aliyah PP DDI As-Salman Allakuang Sidenreng Rappang Regency. The research method used quantitative method. The subject of the research is the students of class X Madrasah Aliyah PP DDI As-Salman Allakuang Sidenreng Rappang Regency academic year 2016/2017. The data collection technique used a test with two stages of data retrieval, the first test to determine the speaking ability before the students were given treatment (pretest) and the second stage to determine students' speaking ability after being given treatment (posttest). Results based on db of 52 converted to t-table at the 5% significance level obtained the price of 1.671. Criteria of submission are if t-test ≥ t-tabel then Ha accepted and Ho rejected, otherwise if t-test ≤ t-table then Ha rejected and Ho accepted. It turns out that t-test is magnitude 2.33 more than t-table, hence alternative hypothesis accepted and null hypothesis rejected. Based on these results it can be concluded that the application of verbal response learning model significantly affects the speaking ability of grade X Madrasah Aliyah PP DDI As-Salman Allakuang of Sidenreng Rappang Regency.
