Abstract

Initial understanding is the ability to build early based on experience and knowledge possessed by using grammar that is still relevant to new knowledge. This study aims to explore the experience and knowledge of students to determine the initial understanding of the reaction rates topic. The method used is a questionnaire as a research instrument. In total, 100 students from SMA in Malang, East Java were selected using the purposive sampling method. From these questions, the types of questions are grouped based on alternative answers and sub-material questions and include 3 levels of representation, namely macroscopic, sub-microscopic, and symbolic. Then students' answers are presented and then the students' initial abilities are described following the answers given by students. In teaching and learning activities, students often encounter concepts of knowledge that are constructed independently by students so that when new knowledge is given, there are often differences in understanding or differences in concepts with actual information. The quantitative findings show that in general students' understanding of concepts is 'good', especially on the basic concepts of the reaction rate topic. However, in several sub-materials such as reaction orders, reaction order graphs, and chemical reaction equations in the reaction rate concept topic, there are still conceptual errors experienced by students so improvements and emphasis on concepts are needed in some of these sub-materials so the percentage of correct answers from students is greater from the previous.

Abstract

Chemistry is considered a complex subject because of its abstract nature. In addition, its relation to everyday life requires a greater understanding of concepts such as reaction-rate material. One way to overcome this problem is to use an appropriate learning model involving students actively developing their ideas, such as the STEM-integrated project-based learning model. Instagram learning media has the most potential to be used as learning media in project-based learning. This research aims to improve students' creative thinking skills through chemistry lab video projects on Instagram. The method used in this study was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. The sample was from science class in elevent garade students. Based on the result of the hypothesis testing, it shows that there is a significant difference in the use of practicum video projects on Instagram in the STEM integrated project-based learning model (STEM-PjBL) on students' creative thinking skills. This practicum video on Instagram can be an opportunity to improve students' creative thinking skills.

The 21st-century chemistry learning that teaches abstract and complex concepts needs to develop learning media that can increase students' learning motivation and visualize abstract concepts in chemistry. One of the media in the 21st century developed in this study is Android-based augmented reality media. The purpose of this study was to test the validity of the Android-based Augmented Reality media and see the differences in perceptions between teachers and students in assessing media. The validation of android-based Augmented Reality learning media uses a questionnaire and is quantitative. The Rater for assessing the product consisted of 6 senior chemistry teachers at 5 different schools in Surakarta and 20 students who had obtained the material for covalent bonding at SMA N 1 Ngemplak Boyolali. The data obtained were analyzed by Rasch Model using Facets software. The results of the analysis show that exact agreements are 35.1% and exacted agreements are 35.2%. This happens because the aspects are considered easy by the teacher, but the students consider these aspects difficult. The aspect or item that is considered the most difficult to achieve is the suitability of the example with the material and improving understanding of the material. Based on this research, in developing media, it must be packaged properly so that it is easily understood and understood by students

Abstract

In the 21st century, social media has emerged as a potential educational tool to enhance learning outcomes and critical thinking skills. To explore this, a study assessed whether Instagram, employed as a learning media for inquiry-based chemistry learning, influences students' critical thinking abilities. The research adopted a quasi-experimental design, utilizing a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group approach in eleventh-grade science classes across Senior High Schools in Surakarta. The research focused on reaction rates due to its abstract nature and visualization challenges. Random sampling was employed to select 72 students aged 16 to 18, divided into experimental and control groups. The research instrument encompassed 24 questions in pretest and posttest formats, comprising multiple-choice and essay-type questions. N-Gain analysis revealed a noteworthy increase in learning outcomes within the experimental group, registering a value of 0.79, surpassing the control group's value of 0.69. This underscores Instagram's efficacy as a learning tool, outperforming conventional teaching methods. Regarding critical thinking skills, the experimental group displayed the highest competence in indicators such as explanation, self-regulation, evaluation, analysis, and conclusion. The study establishes that when integrated into chemistry education with an inquiry-based model, Instagram positively impacts students' critical thinking skills, specifically about reaction rates. This research contributes novel insights into the application of Instagram for chemistry education and pioneers the examination of critical thinking skills within this context, enriching the domain of chemistry learning.

Abstract

Technological developments have changed the way students learn, many students prefer to use smartphones to study compared to using books. Learn-ing biology itself is learning that requires students to do a lot of activities so the right method used is a problem-based and experimental learning method. However, schools cannot provide all learning facilities such as practicum equipment. Therefore, teachers can use existing technology such as digital learning media to support learning. This type of research is qualitative de-scriptive research. The focus of the research is 32 student’s science majors of grade 2 high school students. Methods of data collection using interviews and using a questionnaire. The analysis was carried out in four stages: data collection, data reduction, data preconcludinging conclusions. The results of the study show that there is a great opportunity for conducting experiment-based learning with the help of a smartphone, such as using a virtual labora-tory. As many as 81% of students said that practicum would help them un-derstand biology concepts. Additionally, 94% of students use technology to help them learn. Thus using of virtual laboratories is an opportunity to over-come the lack of learning facilities and can encourage students to be more active in learning activities.
