Abstract

The ability to think critically is a basic ability that students of this century must have. This ability is also emphasized in the Independent Curriculum which is being implemented in Indonesia. However, there is a problem, namely that the school does not have a laboratory to carry out biology practical activities. Based on these problems, the aim of this research is to develop virtual laboratory learning media with ethnoscience content in biology subjects to improve students' critical thinking abilities. This research is a type of development research (R&D) that applies the ADDIE development model. The development process involves collaboration with media experts, material experts and students. The data collection method used was test instruments and questionnaires. The analytical method used is quantitative and qualitative. The results of research by media experts show that the media is suitable for use with an assessment of 92%. The results of the material expert assessment show that the content is suitable for use with an assessment of 88%. The results of the effectiveness test show a sig value of 0.000, where there is a real difference in students' critical thinking abilities before and after treatment. The results of the N gain test show that the effectiveness of learning media in improving critical thinking skills is 47%, which is included in the medium category. It is hoped that the laboratory media developed can contribute to variations in learning media that are in accordance with the Independent Curriculum, namely including elements of critical reasoning and global diversity.

Abstract

One way to preserve culture in education is through ethnoscience-based learning, especially in chemical materials linked to various fields of science in life, including social and cultural. Ethnoscience is a process of reconstructing indigenous science knowledge with scientific science. This research aims to explore trends in ethnoscience-based chemistry learning in Indonesia and analyze the contents, focusing on topics, learning approaches and models, tools, and variables influenced. The research data collection method adopted the preferred items for systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) design and obtained from 30 selected articles indicated from 2019-2024 published in journals indexed by Scopus and SINTA. Analysis results show that the process of making batik is one of the ethnoscience topics that are widely used in chemistry learning. Ethnoscience learning can also be done by combining local wisdom (culture), traditional foods, and natural phenomena of the environment. Ethnoscience learning can be integrated into various learning models, such as contextual teaching and learning (CTL), problem-based, and project-based learning (PjBL). Learning tools often used in ethnoscience-based chemistry learning are modules, evaluation instruments, and worksheets. Ethnoscience is interesting to learn because it positively affects critical thinking and creativity, cultural and conservation character, and scientific literacy.

Abstract

Low creative mathematical thinking ability is caused by the difficulty of learning mathematics on the division of decimal numbers. Therefore, this research aims to develop digital ethnomathematics worksheets using the PBL model to build students' creative mathematical thinking skills on division of decimal numbers in class V elementary school. This type of research is development research with the ADDIE development model. The subjects of this research were 7 material experts and 2 learning media experts. The test subjects in this research and development were 8 students. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The data collection instrument is a questionnaire sheet. The techniques used to analyze the data are qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The research results, namely the assessment results given by learning material experts, were 84.29% so they were declared very good. The assessment results by learning media experts were 90.00% so they were declared very good. The assessment results by students obtained an overall average score of 81.52%, so it was very good. It was concluded that digital ethnomathematics worksheets using the PBL model were suitable for learning. This research implies that using digital ethnomathematics worksheets using models can improve students' creative thinking.

Abstract

This study specifically investigates the impact of an ethnoscience-based Common Knowledge Construction Model (CKCM) learning approach integrated with podcast media on student learning outcomes and collaboration skills, concentrating on chemical bonding. The quasi-experiment research method was conducted in one of the private schools in Sukoharjo Central Java, involving 24 students in control and experimental classes. This research responds to skill demands in the 21st century to develop quality human resources by introducing innovations that integrate culture and technology into a learning system, focusing on enhancing students' soft skills, especially in collaboration. The results of the data analysis show that the learning model significantly influences student learning outcomes. However, the study indicates that this approach results in a slight improvement in students' collaboration abilities. Yet, further exploration and refinement may be necessary to enhance its effectiveness in fostering collaboration skills. This research contributes valuable insights for educators seeking innovative approaches to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the contemporary education and employment landscape, such as competence, superiority, and competitiveness. Thus, the CKCM learning model has great potential to continue to be developed as a learning model that can answer the challenges of the 21st century.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of integrating the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach with comic-based learning and the Think Talk Write (TTW) model on student learning activities and achievements in fundamental chemistry. Focusing on chemical reactions (combustion, rusting, fermentation, etc.) and laws (Dalton’s, Proust’s, Gay-Lussac’s, etc.), the research adopts a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design in a quasi-experimental setting with 36 students divided equally between control and experimental groups. Comparative analysis shows that the experimental group outperforms the control group in learning activities and achievements. The experimental group, subjected to the CRT and TTW model, demonstrates significantly higher engagement in learning activities. The N-Gain Score test reveals a notable increase in learning effectiveness—56.40% for the experimental group versus 29.69% for the control group, indicating the latter's relative ineffectiveness. In learning achievement, the experimental group exhibits a considerable improvement of 67.20%, while the control group shows a moderate gain of 50.12%. The results of the Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) test, with the positive effect of integrating CRT with comics and the TTW model on student learning activities and achievements. The study highlights the efficacy of this approach in enhancing students' understanding and engagement in chemistry, suggesting a promising direction for future educational practices.

Abstract

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) is a learning approach that encourages students to think broadly about real-world problems. However, the limited knowledge of chemistry teachers about the STEAM-based learning and assessment process causes this approach to be rarely implemented. This service aims to train teachers' skills to develop STEAM-based assessment instruments. The workshop method is used with implementation stages including preparation, implementation, evaluation, and reporting. This activity was carried out in a hybrid manner, with presentations by lecturers from Universiti Sains Malaysia and Sebelas Maret University. Participants in this activity were 68 chemistry teachers from various regions of Indonesia. Test instruments totaling 15 questions in the pretest and posttest, as well as questionnaire instruments totaling 18 questions, were used to evaluate the results of this training. As a result, participants' knowledge and skills about STEAM learning increased after the training. In addition, as many as 44% of participants are very interested in implementing STEAM in the chemistry learning process in schools. As evaluation materials, participants gave suggestions to increase the explanation time and provide more examples of STEAM-based instruments.
