Abstract

Self disclosure is a critical component of students’ social and emotional development; however, many students experience difficulties in expressing their thoughts and feelings openly, which may hinder interpersonal relationships and psychological well-being. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of group counseling using assertive training techniques in enhancing students’ self-disclosure. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test–post-test design was employed. The participants consisted of five junior high school students identified as having low self-disclosure levels through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a self-disclosure scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired samples t-test, effect size (Cohen’s d), Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and gain score analysis. The data showed that the post-test average for self-disclosure significantly jumped to 94.00 (SD = 2.74) compared to the pre-test average of 58.20 (SD = 1.92). According to the paired samples t-test, the difference was statistically significant (t(4) = -23.403, p <.001). The very large effect size further corroborates this finding (d = -10.466). The gain score analysis also revealed that every individual has made some progress, the mean increment being 35.80 points. At the same time, the study showed that group counseling with assertive training is a very effective way of increasing students' self-disclosure, not only in theory but in practice as well. Moreover, the study reinforces the idea of skill-based counseling as a means to enhance students' communication abilities and to promote more inclusive and responsive school settings.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Mental well-being is a crucial component of university students’ academic functioning and personal development. However, empirical evidence describing students’ mental well-being levels, particularly in non-Western contexts, remains limited. This study aims to describe the level of mental well-being among university students at two higher education institutions in Indonesia. Methodology: This study employed a descriptive quantitative design. A total of 449 undergraduate students were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling from two universities with different student population characteristics. Data were collected using the Indonesian-adapted version of the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS). Descriptive statistical analysis was conducted to examine the distribution of students’ mental well-being levels. Main Findings: These findings highlight the importance of strengthening preventive and promotive mental health initiatives in higher education settings. Campus-based interventions, such as mindfulness programs and counseling services, may play a strategic role in supporting students’ transition from moderate mental well-being toward flourishing. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides empirical insight into students’ mental well-being profiles within the Indonesian higher education context and offers practical implications for the development of guidance and counseling services.

Abstract

Adolescents today are confronted with growing pressures in both academic and social spheres, which can trigger anxiety around the prospect of failing. Among high school students in particular, these pressures commonly take the form of achievement expectations, scholastic rivalry, and demands placed by parents and the broader community. These circumstances tend to generate mental and emotional strain, shaping how students interpret their successes and setbacks throughout their educational journey. The present preliminary investigation explored how fear of failure operates among senior high school students, centered on five key dimensions: concerns about public humiliation and shame, worries over a diminished sense of self-worth, apprehension regarding an uncertain future, fear of losing one is standing in social circles, and anxiety about letting down those who matter most to them. A quantitative descriptive design was used with 142 students selected through purposive sampling. The study used the Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory (PFAI), a 25-item, four-point Likert scale, to measure students' fear of failure. The measured fear-of-failure reliability was high (Cronbach's α = 0.899). Descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations, frequencies) were analyzed using SPSS. Results showed mean scores above the midpoint of the scale for all five dimensions, indicating a relatively high overall fear of failure. Fear of lowered self-esteem was most prevalent (M = 3.2254), followed by fear of loss of social influence (M = 3.1197), fear of future uncertainty (M = 3.0986), fear of disappointing significant others (M = 3.0704), and fear of humiliation and embarrassment (M = 3.0352). The majority of the students agreed or strongly agreed that academic pressure contributed to fear of lowered self-esteem, fear of future uncertainty, fear of loss of social influence, and fear of disappointing significant others.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Cultural intelligence is essential for school counselors to provide effective multicultural counseling. This study examines the cultural intelligence levels of guidance and counseling teachers in East Java, Indonesia, focusing on its four dimensions: metacognitive, cognitive, motivational, and behavioral. The research aims to assess their ability to address diverse student needs in multicultural contexts. Using a survey method, data were collected from 328 school counselors through the Cultural Intelligence Scale, comprising 20 items. Descriptive analysis categorized participants' cultural intelligence levels and identified strengths and areas needing improvement. Results showed that 66.70% of participants had high cultural intelligence, 33% moderate, and 0.30% low. Most counselors excelled in motivational and behavioral dimensions, demonstrating strong adaptability and willingness to engage with cultural diversity. However, variability in the cognitive dimension suggests a need for further development in cultural understanding. This study concludes that cultural intelligence is a vital competency for inclusive and adaptive counseling services. Targeted training programs are recommended to address gaps, particularly in cognitive skills, to enhance counselors' effectiveness in multicultural settings. These findings provide valuable insights for developing strategies to strengthen cultural competencies in educational counseling practices, ensuring services meet the diverse needs of students.

Abstract

Empathy is a key ability that enables individuals to understand and feel the conditions of others, playing a significant role in the moral development of adolescents. Given the numerous challenges faced by adolescents due to low empathy skills, this study aims to measure the level of empathy among junior high school students. Utilizing a descriptive quantitative method, the findings indicate that 71% (22 students) exhibit a high level of empathy, while 26% (8 students) fall into the very high category, reflecting profound understanding and sensitivity toward their surroundings. Only 3% (1 student) was categorized as having low empathy. These results affirm that students of SMP Islam Diponegoro Wagir generally possess excellent empathy levels, reflecting a culture of mutual respect and strong social sensitivity. The study recommends the development of empathy training programs, such as role-playing and group discussions, to further enhance empathy awareness and skills among students
