Abstract

Research on career development has largely focused on adolescents and young adults, leaving early career construction in primary education relatively underexplored, particularly in religious-based schooling context. Drawing on Career Construction Theory (CCT), this study examines how teachers in Islamic elementary schools facilitate students’ early career meaning making. A qualitative design was employed involving five Islamic elementary school teachers in Central and East Java, Indonesia, selected based on their teaching experience and involvement in student development programs. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and document observations and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis framework. Credibility was ensured through data triangulation and member checking. The findings reveal that teachers act as key agents in fostering students’ early career awareness by integrating Islamic values such as responsibility, discipline, honesty, and respect into learning actions and school programs. Experiential activities, including career visits, school orientation programs, and interest-based extracurricular activities, support students’ early exploration and emerging career adaptability. This study contributes to the development of CCT by demonstrating how early career narratives can emerge within culturally and spiritually grounded educational environments. Pratically, the findings highlight the need for developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive career guidance frameworks in primary education. Future studies should incorporate students’ and parents’ perspectives to further capture the dynamics of early career constructions.

Abstract

This study investigates whether mindfulness fosters grit among Islamic elementary school students across diverse socio-demographic contexts in Indonesia. The growing need for non-cognitive competencies, such as perseverance and self-regulation, underscores the importance of identifying psychological factors that support students’ academic persistence. Therefore, this research aims to examine the predictive role of mindfulness for grit and explore variations in both constructs by gender, residential area (rural–urban), and province. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed involving 535 students from Islamic primary schools across 24 provinces. Data were collected using adapted versions of the Child and Adolescent Mindfulness Measure and an elementary school grit scale, both demonstrating acceptable validity and internal consistency reliability in the Indonesian context. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and simple linear regression. Results indicate that most students demonstrate moderate levels of mindfulness and grit, with significant differences across gender, region, and province. Female and rural students score higher on mindfulness and grit. Regression analysis reveals that mindfulness significantly predicts grit (β = 0.440, p < .001), explaining 19.4% of the variance, suggesting that present moment awareness and emotional regulation contribute to students’ perseverance. These findings imply that cultivating mindfulness within Islamic educational settings may strengthen character education and enhance academic resilience. Future research should use longitudinal and experimental designs, include multi-informant data, and consider contextual factors to better understand how mindfulness supports grit development.

Abstract

Despite the widespread prevalence of academic anxiety among university students, existing measurement instruments often fail to adequately capture contemporary academic stressors or exhibit consistent validity across cultural and disciplinary contexts. This study developed and validated the Students’ Academic Anxiety Scale (SAAS), a multidimensional tool designed to comprehensively assess academic anxiety in diverse university populations. Scale development followed established psychometric procedures, including literature review, student interviews, and expert evaluations. A total of 631 students participated, divided into exploratory (n = 315) and confirmatory (n = 316) samples. The analyses revealed a stable three-factor structure-cognitive, physiological, and behavioral dimensions-with excellent model fit indices (CFI = 0.956, TLI = 0.949, RMSEA = 0.035, SRMR = 0.038). Internal consistency was high across all dimensions (Cronbach’s α > 0.80), while convergent and discriminant validity were confirmed. Measurement invariance across gender and academic disciplines further supported the scale’s cross-group applicability. The SAAS thus represents a psychometrically sound, culturally adaptable, and up-to-date instrument for identifying academic anxiety, facilitating early recognition and targeted interventions among university students.

Abstract

his study aims to analyze the dynamics of verbal abuse among students in the BANI (Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, Incomprehensible) era based on gender and educational level. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of BANI era concepts in the study of verbal abuse using descriptive quantitative methods. The results show that verbal abuse tends to be in the moderate category (85.84%), with the most dominant forms being verbal aggression (M=7.774), insults/name-calling (M=3.619), blaming (M=2.482), and self-deprecation (M=2.181), while forms involving threats (M=1.071), and negative criticism (M=1.084) appear relatively lower. Male students tend to show higher levels of verbal abuse than female students. Based on educational level, verbal abuse is more prominent in junior high school/Islamic junior high school students compared to senior high school students, indicating that early adolescence is a more vulnerable phase. Overall, verbal abuse appears in the form of normalized verbal interactions and has the potential to affect students' psychological well-being and social relationships.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the level of mental toughness of high school students in facing academic, social, and adolescent developmental pressures, and to review it based on dimensions, grade level, and gender. The study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive type. The study subjects were 242 students of SMAN 3 Sidrap aged 15–18 years who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out through a mental toughness questionnaire adopted from Clough's Mental Toughness Questionnaire (MTQ-18), which covers four dimensions: control, commitment, challenge, and confidence. The results of the reliability test showed a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.714, so the instrument was declared to have good reliability. Data were analyzed descriptively with the help of JASP. The results showed that students' mental toughness was generally in the medium category (47.1%), followed by the low category (37.6%) and high (15.3%). In all four dimensions, the medium category also dominated, which indicates that students' mental toughness has developed, but is not yet optimal. Based on grade level, students in grades XI and XII showed a tendency towards better mental toughness compared to those in grade X. Based on gender, male students tended to have higher Mental toughness than female students. This finding confirms that students' mental toughness still needs serious attention in schools. Therefore, the results of this study can be the basis for the preparation of preventive and developmental guidance and counseling services, especially through strengthening adaptive coping so that students are better able to face learning and social pressures, build psychological resilience, and develop optimally in school life.
