Abstract

Based on data released by GAHP in 2019, Indonesia is the fourth country with the highest death rate from pollution in the world. Based on data from the Health Research and Development Agency (Balitbangkes), the prevalence of ARI in South Kalimantan in 2018 was 27.1%. This prevalence is the 10th highest in South Kalimantan. Terminal Km 6, located in Banjarmasin, is one of the centres of commercial and transportation activities in the South Kalimantan region. Pollution in this area comes from the activities of traders and visitors, ranging from cigarette smoke, cooking aromas, to vehicle emissions. The general objective of this study was to review and analyse articles that explain the relationship between environmental health risks due to CO exposure in traders. The research design used was systematic literature review (SLR) with meta-analysis research type. Based on the literature search guided by the inclusion criteria and the selection process, 14 primary studies will be included in the data analysis stage and interpreted the results of the analysis. Primary studies obtained through the literature search stage guided by the inclusion criteria and through the study selection process totalled 14 primary studies. These studies were searched in several electronic databases. Selection of primary studies is an important step to ensure the eligibility of studies to be included in the meta-analysis so that the findings can be valid and reliable.

Abstract

Preeclampsia is characterized by hypertension accompanied by proteinuria or edema, typically occurring after 20 weeks of gestation until the end of the first postpartum week. It remains one of the top five causes of maternal mortality. According to data from Martapura 1 Community Health Center, 45 cases of preeclampsia were reported from 1,245 examined pregnant women between January and July 2023. This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with preeclampsia among pregnant women in this area. Using an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design, the study was conducted in October–November 2023 and involved 102 respondents selected via cluster random sampling. Data collection utilized questionnaires and maternal health books. Statistical analysis revealed significant associations between maternal age and preeclampsia (p = 0.011), and between chronic energy deficiency (CED) and preeclampsia (p = 0.021). However, family history (p = 0.371), diabetes mellitus, quality of health services, and antenatal care interest were not significantly associated. The latter variables were analyzed descriptively due to test limitations. The study concluded that maternal age and CED are significantly associated with preeclampsia, with maternal age being the most dominant factor.

Abstract

Palangka Raya, as the capital city of Central Kalimantan, has unique environmental characteristics because it often experiences forest and land fires (karhutla) which result in an increase in air pollutants. This study aims to analyze the association between exposure to Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) pollutants and the incidence of Acute Respiratory Tract Infection (ARI) in toddlers in Palangka Raya in 2024. This retrospective study was conducted in Palangka Raya City, with data on the incidence of ARI in toddlers obtained from the Palangka Raya City Health Office. Determination of NO2 and CO levels using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform that analyzes TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) satellite data from the Sentinel-5 precursor. Geographic Information System (GIS) software was used to process spatial data and map layout. The relationship between CO and NO2 levels and ARI incidence was analyzed using linear regression tests, followed by multiple linear regression tests if there was a significant correlation. All statistical tests were conducted using a web-based platform. The conclusion of this study was that the linear regression test showed that NO2 levels only contributed 2.07% (p=0.6555) and CO contributed weakly (p=0.4981) to the incidence of ARI. This indicates that other factors are more dominant in causing ARI in Palangka Raya

Abstract

In addition to a wide range of adverse effects on human health, toxic metals such as cadmium (Cd) can promote kidney damage. In this study, we proposed the toxicological properties of these metals which are partly related to lipid peroxidation and chlorinative stress. Thus our study aimed to measure the lipid peroxidation and chlorinative stress in kidney of rats exposed to Cd. The study was performed on 32 male rats (Rattus novergicus) weighing 300±10 grams with normal activity. Rats were acclimatized for a week before the treatment. The animals were divided into two major groups with one group for control (K0) and the other groups were exposed to 3 mg/L CdSO4 through the drinking water. The animals in each groups were divided again into two small groups with different time of exposure. The time of exposure are subacute (six weeks) and subchronic (eight weeks). After the exposure the kidney from all treated animals showed the significant increase of MDA and AOPP levels. In conclusion, subacute and subchronic exposure of Cd caused the kidney damage through lipid peroxidation and chlorinative stress, as shown by increasing of MDA and AOPP levels. Abstract

Background: Beta thalassemia major is a genetic disorder that leads to abnormal hemoglobin production, requiring regular blood transfusions. A common complication is iron overload, which potentially damaging vital organs including the lungs. Oxidative stress due to iron overload is suspected to impair pulmonary function via lipid peroxidation. Objective: This study aims to analyze the correlation between serum ferritin levels and the peroxidative index with pulmonary function in pediatric patients with beta thalassemia major undergoing routine transfusions at RSUD Ulin Banjarmasin. Methods: This study was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach involving children aged 6–18 years. Measured parameters included serum ferritin, peroxidative index (H2O2 to catalase ratio), and pulmonary function spirometry (FEV1/FVC ratio). Result: The Pulmonary dysfunction was identified in 68.85% of subjects, predominantly restrictive (65.57%). Mean ferritin level was 5,423.23±3,139.96 µg/L and mean peroxidative index was 46.42±66.38. There was no statistically significant correlation between serum ferritin (p = 0.239) or peroxidative index (p = 0.147) with pulmonary function. Conclusion: Although elevated ferritin and peroxidative index were observed, no significant association was found with pulmonary dysfunction. Monitoring these parameters may aid in early detection and management of pulmonary complications in thalassemia.

Abstract

Background: Lead (Pb) contamination in aquatic environments has been associated with increased dental health problems in exposed populations. One proposed mechanism underlying this association is the disruption of dental hydroxyapatite (HAp) stability through calcium (Ca) substitution and phosphate (P) degradation, which may alter the Ca/P ratio and mineral integrity. Therefore, this study was conducted to experimentally evaluate the impact of Pb exposure on Ca, P, and Ca/P ratio in human teeth under in vitro conditions. Objective: this study aimed to evaluate the effect of Pb exposure on changes in Ca, P, and Ca/P ratio, as well as the degradation kinetics of HAp in vitro. Methods: This true experimental study employed a completely randomized factorial design. Extracted human teeth were immersed in PbSO₄ solutions at concentrations of 0.01, 0.1, and 1 ppm for 30, 60, and 90 minutes. Ca and P levels were measured, and the Ca/P ratio was calculated. Degradation kinetics were analysed using linear regression to determine reaction order and rate constants. Result: Pb exposure resulted in a consistent reduction of the Ca/P ratio across all concentrations and exposure durations, with values below the stoichiometric hydroxyapatite ratio (1.67), indicating increased mineral instability. Both Ca and P degradation followed zero-order reaction kinetics, with higher degradation rate constants observed at 0.01 and 1 ppm. Conclusion: these findings provide experimental evidence that Pb exposure can destabilize dental hydroxyapatite by accelerating Ca and P degradation, thereby potentially increasing susceptibility to mineral loss.

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition influenced by interactions between genetic susceptibility and environmental exposures during critical developmental periods. However, evidence regarding how environmental factors relate to ASD severity remains limited. This study aimed to examine the associations between urinary lead (Pb) levels, prenatal cigarette smoke exposure, history of low birth weight (LBW), and ASD severity, providing insights into potential environmental influences on clinical outcomes. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 43 children diagnosed with ASD attending a special needs school (SLB C) in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Urinary Pb concentrations were measured using UV-Visible spectrophotometry. Information on prenatal cigarette smoke exposure and birth history was obtained through structured parental interviews. ASD severity was assessed using the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Second Edition (CARS-2), and classified as mild–moderate or severe. Higher urinary Pb levels, prenatal cigarette smoke exposure, and a history of LBW were significantly associated with ASD severity, highlighting potential environmental risk factors that may influence clinical presentation and management strategies. In conclusion, among children with ASD in this school-based population, environmental and perinatal factors were associated with differences in ASD severity. While these findings are promising, emphasizing the need for further research can foster a sense of hope and motivation among researchers, clinicians, and students. Due to the cross-sectional design, causal inferences cannot be drawn. Further studies using longitudinal designs and objective exposure measurements are warranted.

Abstract

Penurunan daya tahan tubuh merupakan salah satu permasalahan kesehatan yang rentan terjadi pada kelompok pralansia dan lansia akibat perubahan fisiologis sistem imun. Pemanfaatan bahan alam sebagai minuman kesehatan menjadi alternatif promotif dan preventif yang aman dan mudah diterapkan di masyarakat. Jahe merah diketahui mengandung senyawa bioaktif gingerol dan shogaol yang berpotensi sebagai imunomodulator. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan jamaah pengajian Langgar Ar-Rahman Kelurahan Loktabat Utara dalam pemanfaatan jahe merah melalui pelatihan pembuatan sirup jahe merah sebagai minuman kesehatan. Metode pelaksanaan dilakukan melalui tiga tahap, yaitu perizinan dan diskusi untuk identifikasi masalah, edukasi mengenai manfaat jahe merah terhadap imunitas, serta pelatihan pembuatan sirup jahe merah. Evaluasi dilakukan menggunakan pre-test dan post-test untuk menilai perubahan tingkat pengetahuan peserta. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan tingkat pengetahuan peserta setelah edukasi, ditandai dengan pergeseran kategori pengetahuan dari dominan “kurang” pada pre-test menjadi “cukup” dan “baik” pada post-test. Selain itu, peserta mampu mempraktikkan secara langsung proses pembuatan sirup jahe merah dengan benar. Kegiatan ini tidak hanya meningkatkan pemahaman masyarakat mengenai penggunaan obat tradisional secara rasional, tetapi juga memberikan keterampilan yang berpotensi mendukung kemandirian kesehatan dan ekonomi. Dengan demikian, pelatihan pembuatan sirup jahe merah dapat menjadi model intervensi berbasis masyarakat dalam upaya peningkatan daya tahan tubuh dan pemberdayaan masyarakat secara berkelanjutan.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research trends regarding filtration and liquid waste quality in hospitals from 2018 to 2024. Using the Google Scholar database and bibliometric analysis applications such as VOSviewer, this study identified and analyzed relevant publications with the keywords filtration, effluent, hospital, COD, BOD, and Liquid Waste Quality. The data obtained was processed with occurrence 4 and term 20 parameters to identify the main patterns and trends in the literature. The analysis results show that the number of publications has increased significantly from year to year, with peaks in 2021 and 2022. The distribution of publication types shows the dominance of research articles with 42 out of 50 publications, followed by literature reviews (3) and conference articles (4). Analysis based on country of publication revealed the dominance of Indonesia with 23 publications, followed by India and several other countries with smaller contributions. Cluster analysis based on network visualization identified four main clusters: (1) effluent quality parameters such as BOD and COD; (2) hospital effluent management; (3) effluent treatment and management; and (4) effluent quality characterization and assessment.The results of density visualization showed a high concentration of quality parameters and treatment technologies, while overlay visualization revealed a close relationship between quality parameters and effluent management. The conclusions of this study highlight the major focus on technical parameters of effluent quality and treatment technology, as well as the importance of integration between effluent management and quality evaluation in research. The findings offer valuable insights for further research and development of innovative solutions in effluent management in hospitals. Keywords: Bibliometrics, Filtration, Effluent Quality, Hospital, Network Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT Wastewater management is one of the most important environmental issues, especially in sectors that generate large amounts of liquid waste, such as restaurants and other public facilities. With the increasing awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability, research on wastewater management continues to grow, focusing on treatment technologies, management policies, as well as the behavior of waste managers themselves. The purpose of this study is to analyze publication trends and bibliometric mapping related to wastewater management, as well as identify factors that influence the behavior of waste managers, particularly in the context of the restaurant and public facilities sector. The method used in this research is a bibliometric approach, using the Publish or Perish application to collect relevant articles from various scientific publications between 2014 and 2024, which were then analyzed with VOSviewer to produce network visualizations, overlays, and densities to map trends, relationships between keywords, and emerging clusters. The results of the analysis show that research related to wastewater management focuses mostly on technical aspects and treatment technologies, but also increasingly pays attention to the influence of waste management behavior and social and cultural factors that influence management decisions. Some of the research gaps found are the need to dig deeper into the influence of social, cultural factors, as well as education policies in influencing waste management. The conclusion of this study is that wastewater management requires a holistic approach, incorporating technology, human behavior, and more effective policies. Further research focusing on the factors that influence the behavior of waste managers will be crucial to formulate more effective and sustainable policies in waste management in the future. Keywords: Wastewater Management, Manager Behavior, Treatment Technology, Environmental Policy, Bibliometric Study  ABSTRAK Pengelolaan air limbah merupakan salah satu isu lingkungan yang sangat penting, terutama di sektor-sektor yang menghasilkan limbah cair dalam jumlah besar, seperti restoran dan fasilitas umum lainnya. Dengan meningkatnya kesadaran akan pentingnya keberlanjutan lingkungan, penelitian mengenai pengelolaan air limbah terus berkembang, dengan fokus pada teknologi pengolahan, kebijakan pengelolaan, serta perilaku pengelola limbah itu sendiri. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis tren publikasi dan pemetaan bibliometrik terkait pengelolaan air limbah, serta mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi perilaku pengelola limbah, khususnya dalam konteks sektor restoran dan fasilitas umum. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan bibliometrik, dengan menggunakan aplikasi Publish or Perish untuk mengumpulkan artikel-artikel relevan dari berbagai publikasi ilmiah antara tahun 2014 hingga 2024, yang kemudian dianalisis dengan VOSviewer untuk menghasilkan visualisasi jaringan, overlay, dan densitas untuk memetakan tren, hubungan antar kata kunci, serta klaster-klaster yang muncul. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa penelitian terkait pengelolaan air limbah banyak berfokus pada aspek teknis dan teknologi pengolahan, tetapi juga semakin banyak memperhatikan pengaruh perilaku pengelola limbah dan faktor-faktor sosial serta budaya yang mempengaruhi keputusan pengelolaan. Beberapa gap penelitian yang ditemukan adalah kebutuhan untuk menggali lebih dalam mengenai pengaruh faktor sosial, budaya, serta kebijakan pendidikan dalam mempengaruhi pengelolaan limbah. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa pengelolaan air limbah memerlukan pendekatan yang holistik, yang menggabungkan teknologi, perilaku manusia, dan kebijakan yang lebih efektif. Penelitian lebih lanjut yang berfokus pada faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi perilaku pengelola limbah akan sangat penting untuk merumuskan kebijakan yang lebih efektif dan berkelanjutan dalam pengelolaan limbah di masa depan. Kata Kunci: Pengelolaan Air Limbah, Perilaku Pengelola, Teknologi Pengolahan, Kebijakan Lingkungan, Studi Bibliometrik
