Abstract

Translating a novel is more difficult than translating academic texts. Novel translators (Genetic factor) usually have problems in translating figurative languages (metaphors, similes, personifications, etc.) and idiomatic expressions because they should reproduce in the target language (TL) the closest natural equivalence of the source language (ST) message, firstly in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style accepted socio-culturally. Other problems come from the translation document (e.g. an English novel translated into Bahasa Indonesia) and readers of the translated novel. The translation document (Objective Factor) has mistakes in equivalence of words. Some expressions are not translated into the acceptable ones in the target language. The readers of translated novel (Affective Factor) are often confused on what they are reading because some sentences are not understandable. The solution of those problems is to provide the novel translators some practical guidance of translating a novel in order to produce the high quality of translation product.   Key words: translation, novel, metaphors, similes, idiomatic expressions, ST (Source Language), TL (Target Language)

Abstract

Writing competence is one of significant and basic demands for teachers in delivering their profession as educators. Many teachers feel that writing a book is a pride but it is too difficult for them to do. Many factors influence them not to start to write, such as inner motivation, institution supports, ideas, materials, and opportunities. For examples, many of them are lack of motivation to be confident course book writers, their institutions do not support their efforts and facilitate them well, they have no idea what they are going to write, they are not accustomed to provide their own lesson materials for their daily instruction—only copying from books or other resources, and most of them do not have any opportunity at all to write a course book. Therefore to create teacher-writers and produce course books in one school, One Book One Teacher (OBOT) program comes as a solution. OBOT is a program designed for teachers to be a course book writer at schools. Recently we revealed that OBOT has potential activities as an integrated program in preparing teachers to be professional course book writers. In this study, to dig up their responses on course book writing activity and OBOT implementation in their school, we conducted a descriptive survey and observation on 13 teachers in Senior High School Bina Amal Semarang. We distributed questionnaires, tabulated, analyzed and interpreted the data, then drew the conclusion. The research results show that significantly OBOT encouraged teachers to write course book actively and led them to be productive course book writers.

Abstract

Translating Indonesian texts into English versions is a complicated task for students to do. It isshown by them when they do translation in the classroom. The problems usually come intotheir mind when they have to search equivalent words, appropriate grammar and acceptedstructure for target language they will produce. This scene can be observed when they dotranslating activity individually. They just do it themselves without doing collaboration with theirfriends. They only look up a dictionary and think of it themselves. In this situation a teacher justassigns the task and assesses it, no more to do. As a result, the translation products of thestudents are poor. Therefore, in order to improve the students’ translation ability and quality oftranslation, the teacher should teach the students translation by using a Cooperative WorkProcedure (CWP) in their translation process. This procedure can lead the students be able totranslate well and produce good translation products because they do translating process in acollaborative group.

Abstract

Translating is a complex and complicated process because it is not only rendering forms of language but also transferring meanings and styles of culture. It needs both a basic knowledge of English and content mastery to produce good products of translation. Teaching translation through the interactive web helped translator students easier, faster, and better translate texts from one language to another one, from example from English into Indonesian language. The problem happened in the Translation Class II taught in the English Department of Semarang State University, Indonesia. The research method used was Action Research that led five steps of research: Identifying the problem, gathering data, interpreting data, acting on evidence and evaluating result (Ferrance, 2000, p.9). In this study I used online tools that facilitated the teaching translation process, such as search engines of translation, translation class sites, tutor and learner blogs, and translation web quests. Practically those online teaching tools were implemented in and out the classroom. The teacher instructed students through the class sites, tutor blog and web quest while the students did their translation practices and tasks using search engines of translation through the learner blogs. The research result showed that teaching translation through the interactive web improved students‘ translation products from the average score of initial test 73 to the average score of final test 89. It means that this action was significant that increased the progress score up to 1.6.

Abstract

Cendana 9 No. 157 Pontianak Kota. Hasil dari perbandingan kecocokan model yang digunakan menunjukan bahwa model kombinasi Cost231 Walfisch Ikegami dan paulsen merupakan model yang cocok digunakan daripada kedua kombinasi lainnya. Perbandingan jaringan 3G dan 4G memiliki hal yang sangat penting dalam halnya kebutuhan untuk mengakses informasi.
