Abstract

Although the use of digital media in primary school instruction has received considerable attention in previous studies, research that specifically examines the integration of flipbooks with Problem Based Learning (PBL) to improve the ability to write factual and opinion sentences remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PBL-based flipbook teaching materials in improving the writing skills of sixth-grade students, particularly in distinguishing between facts and opinions. A mixed-methods approach was employed using a one-group pretest–posttest design combined with qualitative observations and interviews, involving 22 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using writing tests, observation sheets, student response questionnaires, and interview protocols, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings show that the integration of flipbooks and PBL increased student engagement, strengthened group collaboration, and improved individual learning outcomes, although variation in achievement remained. These results contribute to the development of digital constructivist learning theory and broaden understanding of the use of interactive media in Indonesian language instruction. The study concludes that interactive flipbooks play an important role in supporting elementary school students’ analytical writing skills and recommends that teachers adopt digital PBL-based teaching materials to strengthen literacy competencies. The implications of this research include theoretical contributions to digital pedagogy and practical recommendations for educators to modernize learning resources, while also opening opportunities for further exploration of adaptive digital media and differentiated instruction in the teaching of writing.

Abstract

This study examined the use of Arya Penangsang animation as a culturally grounded instructional medium for improving Indonesian language writing skills among fifth-grade students at SDN Wonosemi 2. Writing instruction in elementary classrooms is often constrained by students' limited ability to generate ideas, organize paragraphs, and use appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed. Quantitative data were obtained from pre-test and post-test writing scores of 23 students, while qualitative data were collected through classroom observation, documentation, and analysis of students' written products. Writing performance was assessed using three aspects: content relevance to the theme, paragraph coherence, and vocabulary and sentence structure. Descriptive quantitative findings showed an increase in the overall mean score from 64.78 in the pre-test to 82.17 in the post-test, with an absolute gain of 17.39 points. Aspect-level analysis also indicated improvement in content relevance, paragraph coherence, and vocabulary and sentence structure. Qualitative findings explained that the animation provided a concrete visual narrative, increased attention and motivation, supported idea generation, and helped students organize storylines more coherently. The integration of both strands suggests that Arya Penangsang animation is a feasible and pedagogically meaningful medium for culturally contextualized writing instruction. However, because the study used a small one-group sample without a control group, the findings should be interpreted as preliminary evidence of learning improvement and classroom feasibility rather than definitive causal evidence.

Abstract

Abstract: Based on initial observations conducted in the classroom, it appears that students' speaking skills are still low. They are not yet able to express ideas verbally, and the use of one-way learning models and approaches is the main cause. Given these issues, it is necessary to apply a synectic learning model with a deep learning approach assisted by extemporaneous methods. This study aims to describe, measure differences, and measure improvements in Indonesian speaking skills in third-grade elementary school students. The approach used is a mixed method (quantitative and qualitative). Qualitative data were obtained from observations, interviews, and documentation. Qualitative data explains the stages of activities and changes in student skills after the application of the synectic model, deep learning approach, and extemporaneous method. Quantitative data were obtained from the results of pretest and posttest speaking skills at SDN 02 Leteh with a total of 26 students. This study applies the second strategy synectic learning model, using analogies and speaking activities using a text framework to express understanding. The results of the Paired T-Test for the pretest and posttest proved that there was a significant difference between the two, with a t-value of -15.958 and a significance of 0.000. In addition, the N-Gain test results also showed a score of 0.6095 or 60%, indicating that the learning process provided was effective enough to improve students' speaking skills. The qualitative results reinforce the quantitative results, as demonstrated by the students' increased courage, fluency, and activity in speaking.
